Army sergeant is tired of living 2 lives under 'Don't ask, don't tell'

There are 285 comments on the www.syracuse.com story from Jan 10, 2010, titled Army sergeant is tired of living 2 lives under 'Don't ask, don't tell'. In it, www.syracuse.com reports that:

Chuck Iavarone was 19 when he decided to start living his life as an openly gay man. He came out after he graduated from Cicero-North Syracuse High School. He started college, but left after the Sept. 11 attacks to join the U.S. Army Reserve.

He went to basic training. And stepped back into the closet.

For the past eight years, Iavarone has lived a dual life. Openly gay at home. Straight in the Army.

"Funnily" enough to me, my greatest personal outrage over this matter is that every time I express my opinion on it,

someone with a big ****ing mouth acts as if *I* am dishonorable.

Know what? I'll be happy to continue ripping them new assholes left and right, because my view on this is cemented and non-negotiable.

The United States military is a completely laughable and dishonorable institution for this policy. It demonizes people, treats human beings who can do their jobs as if they are lepers, and causes them problems that are *so* dishonorable it tarnishes the entire military.

And don't get me started on the military personnel who support it. They're the ones I'm happy to make look like dumbasses if they start with me; I *itch* for the opportunity. I don't stand for their mouths or their misplaced, spineless attitudes.

This policy needs to stop yesterday. It is sickening and anti-American and makes our military look like a joke.

Don't like my opinion? Get a goddamn spine and form your own. Mine is mine and it will *NOT* change, the end.

Thanks for reading.

No one should have to be required to live a lie in order to serve their country.

This great American is putting his life on the line so that these bigots can have their freedom of speech and religion......YET HE IS NOT ALLOWED THE RIGHT TO MARRY THE PERSON OF HIS CHOICE.......that's just wrong.

I find it so laughable that "ensuing sexual tension" is a euphamism for FEAR.

As woman can tell you, the threat of rape is a constant, but in our society, ANYONE has the ability to say, "No, thanks." Unless the person is persistent after rejection and threatens violence, there is no crime being committed.

In a better world, a decline would sound like this: "No, thanks, but I know someone who might be interested - you two might get along great - how about I set you two up on a date?"

It's an outrage and have you seen the latest comments from that NOM guy (Brian Brown) on the California trial?

He sounds like a goddamn idiot.

I have no nicer way to put it.

Every statement he makes about that trial is a lie and a misrepresentation from first word to last: all self-serving; all *completely* reinvented and jaw-droppingly uninformed ... and so parasitically selfish, it chills one's blood.

Thank you for your post.

I honor all military personal who put their lives on the line for all of us...your sexual orientation has nothing to do with it...

If, though by chance you have same sex attraction, and are in the military...I salute you!

Not cause of your sexuality...but cause of your service...I honor you and will buy you dinner any day of the week...the fact that your willing to die for us...a population of strangers...

To all my military comrads...you are my heros...whether gay or straight!!

<quoted text>Clearly you are an idiot and have never served in the military. With more people coming out, DADT is not necessary. The security risk factor is minimized when the bad guys can't use someone's orientatuion as a blackmail tool.
Unless you were raised in the backwoods of Mississippi, most people able to walk upright aren't all that concerned with gays. Even back when I was in we had a gay officer. He didn't flaunt anything or say anything. He did his security-sensitive job in an exemplary manner. We just knew and didn't much care.
And you want any qualified person willing to put their lives in harm's way fighting your wars for you.(Apparently you're not fighting them yourself.) By the way, are you in the military? Have you even been? Ever see anybody in high heels in a firefight?
Ya know, this is one time I agree with you.

I noticed and he is showing just why "men" like him are not really good for the military. They are the cause of more tension and upset then any of us ever could be.

I don't know why any gay would want to defend a country that does not see them as an equal citizen with equal rights. On the other hand, maybe they could help these macho straight men finally win a war for a change.

No problem.:D Believe me, the pleasure is mine.

That's what an idiot gets when they try to talk soldier to a military brat. I've had many years of talks with a father who is an E9 (the highest rank an enlisted soldier can be). Too much practice actually-he drives me crazy!

Yep, reminds me of some of the "bad asses" that I ran into in my days as a soldier.

One of the first ones I ever ran into was in my ex-husband's unit. They used to call him Napoleon because of his size and attitude.
