For the people who dont want the "public option" included in the healthcare bill. Please read the last paragraph of this article. The poor kid has to rent a powered wheelchair and ask for donations because his parents private insurance probably considers a powered wheelchair a "luxury". Someones independent mobility is a luxury to private insurance companies. A federally run insurance program would never be able to get away with that. If you have strep throat and need a prescription they will help you out, but when something actually catastrophic happens, they will give you the bare minimum.

It was a tragic accident, nothing more - I know a close member of his family so it is like keeping an eye on one of your own family. I have been reading the updates for his progress, Ben has the most amazing will to push beyond what most people in the same situation could even imagine they can do. His drive, spirit, determination, and hope are so far beyond his age. To his benefit, he was a vibrant physically healthy young man which I believe is why he has been able to come as far as he has come. He comes from a small town that is truly a community and that is what real communities do, pull together to help one of their own. The bigger the town or city, the less you will see of such caring if one has fallen, such a sad thought.

Rely on friends and family as well as your own abilities. The going can be rough but the victories sweet.

There is an ad on TV that guarantees they will get you a wheelchair free from the government...

I'm guessing it is because of the first poster speaking of the tragic accident, then laying blame to the parents. I swear, some people just don't get it. I hope the person that posted the original comment can look himself/herself in the mirror. The kids that held car washes, had bracelets made, organized events to help w/costs, are more compassionate than that guy. Good for the kids in GDRS. Better yet, good for Ben on the progress he has made!!

Furthermore, why speak the details of the accident. If his brother was driving, he had to live with that everday. If someone else was driving, that child and his family have to do the same. It was a ACCIDENT not an on purpose!!!!!!!!!!

I have many friendships with residence in your community. You should be proud of the community that you live in. It is nice to hear the stories of a community that comes together in the time of need. Those are the core values that have been lost in many communities.

Move to Canada if you believe the Government is going to take care of you. Why do Canadians come here for their medical care? Just like Government took care of those during the Hurricane and Government raping of the social security system. I do not want my Senator or Congress Reps to be making those decisions for me.

Bring it back to the story, why do you think the Goss Family sent their child to Atlanta for medical care? Probably because they had a choice and the current system does work. We need laws to improve the current system.

What group is the largest spender of healthcare in this country? Answer: US Government and look at the waste in Medicare and Medicaid system. America, it’s time that we wake up and see the positives in the current system. The system is broken and it needs to be fixed. We need laws to support the abuse in the system, not laws for the Government to take over.

I bet you voted for Obama because he was going to withdraw from Iraq and pull the troops out of Afghanistan. Or was it him closing down Guantanamo Bay. Or was it controlling the bonuses for Wall Street. Or was it him giving everyone high paying jobs. Or was it him giving gay rights supporters’ equal rights.
So sorry

Give me a break! Because an insurance company won't buy someone a wheel chair, we should allow the federal goverment total control of OUR health??? Our communities are full of generous people who will help in this type of situation. WE DON'T NEED THE FEDERAL GOVERMENT!!!

Umm yes, an insurance company SHOULD buy you a powered wheelchair if you are paralyzed in an accident. You know, when the insurance company takes money out of your paycheck every week, that means, when you get injured, they should return that money. Do you people really not get that? You just think that insurance ompanies should take your money and not then NOT insure you when you need it? Believe me, if private insurance companies would be forced to cover things you actually need when you need it, then I would not be in support of a federal insurance plan. But we all know that will never happen. An electric wheelchair costs 10,000 to 20,000 dollars. A family shouldn't have to beg the community with an economy like this when they are already paying insurance premiums every paycheck.

Matt,
I am sorry, but you must be a young man. Stop watching liberal TV to get your news. The Goverment will not be buying wheelchairs for those that need it. They currently do not do that for seniors. My friend, would you expect them to buy you medicine? Of course you would. It was not until a few years ago, that evil man you call Mr. Bush, that the government offered our seniors a pharmacy benefit under Medicare. There were decades that our seniors did not have a pharmacy benefit under medicare.

Think friend, think. It looks like your congress man is going to vote against the bill now too.

What a sad story. It is time for the state to crack down on teen drivers who abuse their licenses. This should never happen again.

God bless this kid and his family. Too bad it wasn't the driver instead.

Ron, it makes me sick to think that you are capable of wishing this upon another child, whether they were the driver at the time or not. Yes, it is horrible that this had to happen to Ben, but he is a strong young man who will be able to work his way through this struggle better than anyone I've ever known.

Also, its awfully pathetic how you all have nothing better to do with yourselves but turn this young boy's horrible misfortune into a moralistic political debate about teen driving and the state of our health-care system. Your negativity and bitterness serves no purpose, and has no place in Ben's healing process.
