AGAIN, the death penalty would free up a lot of space and eliminate overcrowding. I will bet there are LOADS of death sentence applicants in the massachusetts prison system.2 chairs, no waiting!

As always, we can count on the Sentinel to stir the pot...the facility in Shirely is a MAXIMUM SECURITY level facility and is designed to hold inmates meeting that criteria, thats not news.

If the inmates at the facility want to riot, give them knives and let the fun begin. After a few hours, clean up the bodies...problem solved. Inmates desreve nothing more than a clean set of sheets and 3 meals a day...a prison isn't for babysitting.

Prisoners are treated way to good. Food, medical, great library, tv, excellent work out equipment. These guys are bitching because they have to have a room mate. Give me a break!! I totally agree with the above DEATH PENALTY. We're all tired of our money going to house these worthless slugs.

Don't look at it as a room mate, they should look at it as "friends with benefits".

Most men in Shirley are coping with losing their freedom do we need to add over crowing another prison just to make another transfer prison come on that is what Concord was. My brother is incarcerated in Shirley he says tempers are flying already Gougen was murdered by an inmate when they were 1 man to a cell think of what is going to happen when you add another inmate to an already small cell. Their living situation is already miserable.

Adding another prisoner to an already small, crowded cell just creates more problems for prisoners and staff.

Most people, criminals or college students, even married couples, bicker with their roomates and annoy each other. It will likely fuel this natural tendency to fight, when you double bunk people who are already in a bad situation.

Shirley used to me minimum - medium security and the townspeople felt relatively safe. A friend who was a psychologist there in those days was stabbed in the heart and drove himself to the hospital with the shiv stuck in place (smart guy.)

So the minimum security prisoners who used to be on work release wind up going to the "more desirable" communities and the harder core cons start coming into Shirley. Then it goes to straight medium, then maximum security (really? have you looked at that campus backed up to residential areas? Impossible!), the townspeople are at risk, they have no control over the state's actions, and now with overcrowding there's a huge powder keg sitting right there on the Shirley-Ayer-Lancaster line right off Route 2.

There is no common sense left in government. But what's really the worst part is that there really is no common decency left it government, at least at the Federal and State level and the cities, Fitchburg included.

My most liberal friends are considering rethinking their opinions on gun control. One said today that maybe it's time we begin to issue pistols and permits to the average citizen.

Worse days are coming. Hang onto your hats. It's going to be a bumpy ride.

What's really lousy about the Shirley prison is that it is the home to the Shaker historical site and citizens have no access to those buildings or that history. Bet they're just gorgeous now.

what do you propose we do with them? not judging, just asking. there is limited monies for building new prisons of course the existing ones must be utilized.

as to the gun issue, you have my whole support. if more citizens had them, they would be able to defend themselves before the cops arrived.

If you had ever taken a look at the MAXIMUM security unit, by the way it is realatively new, you will find that in addition to the rather severe security precations in place, it is not part of the old compound. It is separate, secure... as in escape proof, it is probably the safest neighbor they have in the area. It was specialy built for the purpose it is used...Maximum security.

I'm sure your brother is innocent, was framed, turning his life around, blah blah blah. No one cares about these pieces of garbage. They put themselves in prison. If they don't like it, don't do the crime.

you mentioned they all seem to find God...well with all do respect as I am not flaming you, what makes you different in your sin against God...the way I see it, sin is sin...granted some need to be watched because of their tendencies, but who are you to say who God will forgive and who He won't? to be honest, they are there with nothing but time, how could you not deal with your spirituality in lockdown? anyways, God bless...

With conditions so severe in the prison, shouldn't we do the humane thing and offer a voluntary room where prisoners can enjoy a four course meal, their favorite movie, a bottle or two of their favorite beverage, and then be introduced to ... Dr. Kevorkian.

Imagine the taxpayer savings!

Minus Dr. Kevorkian is how the prison system is right now. Inmates can file grievances against the corrections officers. They can file grievances if they don't get their desserts with their meals.

They get extra time outside or more TV time after shanks are found because the social workers and the state of MA thinks that they can be rehabilitated and keeping them out of their cells will help that. SERIOUSLY. It is time people wake up and become aware at how GREAT these prisoners have it in MA. "Free room and board" is how they see it at this point.

Prison is no longer a deterrent for crime.

the difference is my sin is not murder , rape , or violently assaulting someone.

the way I see it, sin is sin...
not if y ou are a Catholic, ever here or mortal sin???

granted some need to be watched because of their tendencies, but who are you to say who God will forgive and who He won't? to be honest, they are there with nothing but time, how could you not deal with your spirituality in lockdown? anyways, God bless...
when the crapola hits the fan, they all find God,,its funny how they didnt find Him before the raped and mutilated and tortured the little girl or boy who was their victim, they all should be executed slowly and painfully, just like their victims. You will never get one ounce of sympathy out of me for any of these scumbags, I hope the burn in hell.
