That young man should have been allowed to go help - if he bought part of the farm himself while doing it, he'd be able to live with himself a lot easier for having made that heroic sacrificial attempt. And if he'd bought the whole farm and died - he would have died a hero for trying to go save a buddy's life, and it would have helped his family's grief a little. But because he wasn't allowed to go help when it happened, he's going to have that rage at that Sgt or officer for the rest of his life and survivor's guilt on top of it, unable to let it go. Mace might have survived if Carter'd been able to go straight to him when it happened - he might have ended up a paraplegic or amputee, but he probably would have lived - Mace lost that Golden Hour so vital to surviving severe trauma.
