Today In History October 27

On Oct. 27, 1811, inventor Isaac Merritt Singer, founder of the sewing machine company that bears his name, was born in Pittstown, N.Y. In 1787, the first of the Federalist Papers, a series of essays calling for ratification of the United States Constitution, was published.

It is commonly stated that on the evening of 27 October with the armies preparing for battle, Constantine had a vision which led him to fight under the protection of the Christian God. The details of that vision, however, differ between the sources reporting it.
