Well - Anyone wanting to move to the Silver City area should read the SC Police Blotter. Violence, larceny, theft, damage to property .......this is a disrespectful, ignorant, poorly policed, community.
And the drop in population is only 2%???? I regret moving to Silver City.

I am considering a move to Silver City, so I am interested in why you think the County sucks.

This place sucks because La Raza thinks they own this whole area and are intent on running non-Hispanic outsiders out. It sucks because the cops look the other way when it comes to gangs and drugs and breeches of civil conduct. It sucks because women get murdered here and it goes unsolved or unreported. It sucks because the populace thinks it is above the law and the cops refuse to even try to enforce the law. If you are a person of real talent then stay away. The powers to be downtown will run off anyone they perceive as competition to their little empires built on mediocricy or worse. It sucks because there is no respect for life. Life is not sacred here. That would include attitude and action against people and animals. It sucks because there are a lot of freeloaders that refuse to work. They would rather steal your stuff and harrass your children. Oh yeah, it sucks because government programs that provide for needy people are plundered and pillaged by office holders and their friends and relatives. Any more questions??

Some say the police are the drug trafficers Some say police let family members off easily. Some say and say more but you just have to come here, rent a house, stay as long as you can then make your decision on our town. The Gila National Forest is the best. It offers alot of outdoor activities. Silver City NM has a good High School I do not recommend Cobre High School. It is an art cultural town. Saturday morning, we have the Farmers Market which is the best. Just take a vacation here and then decide. YOU! make it happy here.

To Jackie from West River MD: Don't buy in Silver City. It's a beautiful area & there is plenty of real estate outside the city. Don't move here if you have children to educate. Don't move here if you are unable or unwilling to shoot a gun to defend your family or property.

Move here. We need more guns. Also need more help when the snow gets 12 feet deep. Crime is so rempid that everyone has a pitbull. We put Granny by the front door when we go to wallmart for fear that some drug crazed kid in middle school will rob us. The only problem with the local police is they charge too much for all our drugs. Other than that this place is great. For fun we burn the local parks and shoot at the Mayor. If your smart enough you can run for one of the County Commissionar positions and take all the money you want by billing 2 and 3 times for the same service. Last one got caught she wasn't smart enough. We keep all the high dollar business out of town as we don't want too many outsiders to join our cult. Come join the fun.

I find it kind of hard to believe that you just happen to come up on this thread AND have intentions of moving to Grant County.

If you want to know the truth go to the Silver City Daily Mess (I meant Press). Pick a year. Go through the archives. Look for articles involving crime, and/or law suits. Write down the names of those who are suspected or are the perpetrators of a crime. Go to the courthouse a few blocks south of the Silver City Daily Press. Go to the Court Clerks Office. Ask to read the file if the matter was adjudicated.

You will educated yourself on why those who responded to your post feel as they do. The truth is there. Do you really want to know?

Hi Jackie. Don't pay too much attention to most of the negative folks posting here. They are half-wits who, I'd wager, hate everything, including themselves. Silver City is a nice small town, it has an arts and cultural district, lots of frontier history, a four-year state university, and beautiful surroundings in the Gila National Forest and the Gila Wilderness.
But, just like any other community, large or small, we do have incidents of crime and gangs. I can't recall ever hearing of any community that didn't experience some criminal activity. Have you?

Right on the money. But don't tell to many people.
Lets keep the secret to our selves. We live in one of the greatest places on earth. Clear skies, green mountains, clear streams and great people.

Sure we have our flaws, but in actuality, Silver City is no worse than any other place. Law enforcement isn't necessarily the problem. They do what they can, but it is difficult when the DA's office throws plea bargains out because they are too lazy to prosecute. Then, when the cases do actually go to trial, the liberal judges hand out a slap on the wrist.

To be honest, I think Silver City offers a much higher quality of life than many of the other places I have been. Crime happens everywhere and I wouldn't say SC is worse than anywhere else.

If you look at the statistics on paper, I would say they are skewed. The defined city limits is just over 10,000 people, but in a 5 mile radius around town, the population is closer to 20,000+. So you have 20,000+ people living in a town of 10,000, of course the per capita crime rate may seem high.

I should have mentioned in my question that I've stayed in Silver City lots of times, however the longest stay was for only 2 weeks. I simply wanted the honest opinion of people who currently reside in Silver City.

As for crime, it's everywhere. Since I live not far from Washington, DC; Baltimore and Annapolis, MD, I can tell you that what you experience does not compare to our area. I think because Silver City is so small, the crime feels more personal. As with most things in life, It's what you make of it.

I haven't decided where I will move, but I really appreciate all the responses.

Thank you
