Well, I'm with the author. I am 41. I was in the Indianapolis Tenn Challenge from the age of 14 to 16.5. Before I went in, I was a Christian, that had never done drugs, or been on a date. I didn't smoke ect. My mother who had paid someone to take care of me for years didn't want me back, when the lady was no longer able to take care of me. I was suppose to graduate the program after the first year, but a week before graduation they pulled me into the office, and demoted me saying I didn't raise my hands in church, and they felt I had lust in my heart. I was made to go to churches almost every weekend to "give my testimony" where I was the one behind the pulpit. to raise funds. They even sent my picture out in flyers and such. I was definately exploited, for their financial gains. I also remember scubing the mess hall floor with my tooth brush all night when I first arrived. Or the time I was beaten with a board for telling one of the counselors that I was afraid of one of the girls that was making advances on me. I was told I should be ashamed of myself for thinking someone was gay that just wanted my love. That is until the night they caught her trying to rape me with a knife, and kicked her out. Did they apologise for beating me for trying to come to them for help? No!
After Leaving I never set foot in a church again.
I had gone 3 times a week before going to that place. I choose to have my own relationship with god, and not be told I need to raise my hands, speak in tougnes or be slai in the spirit! So you can knock the author all you want but I was there for two years and I know what I'm talking about! I am 41 and still remember how I suffered in their hands. I would never send a child there. I have two adult daughters and two small step children.
I would like to invite all of the Indianapolis teen challenge survivors to log on to you tube ( videos ) on click on everything happens for a reason. I think it will touch you....

I also was in Teen Challenge for several months in 1976. I kept notes in my socks about the abuse there, because they would "raid" our rooms when we would be in bathroom, etc... They would take us on an outing, or hide us in the basement when the Health Dept.came for inspections--there were far too many occupants for the Fire Codes! I was a little older than most of the others--my Psychiatrist had put me on the Adult Psych. Unit there in Indpls., I got out, then he wanted to put me back in,so my parents wanted me at Teen Challenge instead. My Dad had been a pastor and he and the Indiana church he pastored would have Betty Violette come speak about every year, bringing her entourage of "trophy testimonies" to give their speeches. Mom & Dad didn't believe my reports of abuse there during their visits to me. I wanted to expose Betty & Ruthie, but did not have the support I needed at that time. I was in college by the time they were arrested in 1980, and THEN my folks believed me!!(Don't know WHAT I did with those notes). Not EVERY TEEN CHALLENGE has abuse issues--this one DID because of the 2 "HYPOCRITES" that ran it--God will surely judge them for all the abuse I personally witnessed when I was there! I'm glad someone had the backbone to 'blow the whistle'--I only wish it had been me, because I know the abuse continued even after I left up until they were arrested!

This reminds me of a place in decatur called Webster cantrell hall. Its more or less a group home. It housed boys and girls when I was there. So much abuse. I remember a room called the observation room. Where they would make you strip naked and go in this carpeted room while everyone would peak through the window at ya like your an animal in a cage. I'm talking about being 13 locked in a room naked. No blankets. Freezing cold. Just to be watched. I also remember some of the staff members would give us drugs. Then drug test us and we would get punished for it. Very scary to think this is where our kids go when their parents don't want them. These are the places dcfs sends our children to. So sad. And the Christian specific places are even worst. I remember a black staff member putting me in that observation room all the time. And she would wisper in my ear how much she hated white girls like me. But for some reason. Its still up and running. And they still have the observation room. Just reminded me of my exprierience when I was reading this

They also put me on fourteen different medications at once. Went there when I was 13. Put me on Prozac paxil depacote zanex zoloft lithium. And many many others all at the same time. Then would write in their reports I was a walking zombie. Well g I wander why. Needless to say I ran away and hid in a different state till I was eighteen. So I wouldn't have to go back. And have never been on medication since. I was sad when I was 13. Had just found my dad dead on the kitchen floor. I needed a hug. Not naked in a room doped up on drugs.

I recently just went to the Audrey home in Decatur,Illinois. After being there less than 24 hours I packed up my bags and voluntarily signed myself out. This place is WORSE than prison. The first night, I wanted to go on a walk around the block by myself. This was not allowed. I was NEVER left alone, even to go to the bathroom. This place is a cult. They "rewire" your brains for you to think like "them." Im glad I got out when I did.....

That did'nt happen so the staff at Boy's school got me an off grounds job working for public service Indiana.I was only in boys school a couple hours a day, for school and sleep. But they would not tell me that Beaty had finally killed someone. I told my counciler that she would the first week I was in boy's school . I'm verry sad that I was right. Anyway I would like to read any information that any one has on the events of the charges against Beatty & Ruth, Thanks , Jeffery James Misiano
Hello, I am Mindy's Sister. I would like to talk to you more about this. It may have been thirty four years ago, but this is still something I have been researching on and off for YEARS. Before I found this thread the other night, I had no idea that SO MANY young men and woman went through this nightmare call Tc. If you would like, please email me at [email protected]

Teen Challenge is a tough program. Those who complain of abuse are those who weren't serious about straightening their lives out.
The "abuse" at Teen Challenge is having to stop your destructive habits and live like an adult.
Betty and Ruth have helped many young people get off drugs, and have intervened in many potential suicides. If you couldn't handle the program, and were not serious about changing your life... a little self-discipline easily seems like abuse.
If you were there for 6 years and were "abused" you aren't very intelligent, since you can leave at any time.
I would really like to know your experience there. You seem to be related to the woman who were involved in so many horrific events that took place there. Many of us have our facts straight. In fact, my sister was fifteen and couldn't just walk out as you say. You have no idea what these, now men and woman went through in this program. If you had, you would keep your comments to yourself or do a little more digging before you tell anyone that they have their facts wrong.

Central Indiana TC worked for me. Sorry :/ lol
I know that all the statistics they put out probably aren't 100% accurate but I got a lot of benefit out of TC. And I had to scrub stairs and toilets with a toothbrush too so you're not the only one. I think the students provide most of the "abuse" it isn't the counselors or directors. I had a friend there that was rooming with 2 homosexual girls who participated in "razor blade sex" [whatever that is] and needless to say she felt extremely uncomfortable. Not once did any counselor or director touch me or say something inappropriate to me and not once did they say I had to do something mundane in order to get to heaven.
What year were you there?

Bonnie you are correct! What I see in this forum, is people that either went to a different state"s tc, or TC that was not the brick building ( with house behind the alley)but one formed later in IN. So they haven't a clue what it was like for us before. There are also adult TC's where the people can leave, however we were in a minor's TC and could not, with coil wire up-top of at least an 8 foot fence.People that weren't there in the late 70's and early 80's really haven no idea what went on at that TC, and really shouldn't comment on it. If they had a good experience, at a different one, that's great for them, but to say we didn't experience what we did, when there is more than just one of us saying it..is just not bight at all. Nor is it very " Christian" like to assume we are all liars, when they were there. And to the one who said something about someone being there for 6 yeas..I've not read that anywhere. Obviously if it was a place for minors, nobody would be there for 6 years unless they went there at 12 yeas old.I personally was 14. I wrote what I did here years ago, to both get it off my chest, and help the others who suffered too. If someone thinks the place was great because they went to a different one, o different time, or even an adult one..what do you know of us? Nothing! Bonnie, I did not see what happened to you sister, but I heard plenty.I can't be of much assistance to you, other than to say..I'm so sorry for you loss, and if our story can save even one child's life from being sent there by their parents, than this forum is worth it. I'm also curious if anyone knows what happened to Tony and Cindy Mcgrath. Or Debbie and Bob. At least I think he name was Debbie. She was in the program, graduated, stayed as a counselor, and then married a male counselor named Bob who was from Boston, with the Boston accent.

I was only 13 when I was there. I turned 14 not long b4 I left. The nightmare must of began right after I left.

I remember apple picking and poison ivy. I loved going to stienways. With all the great memories is what has kept me from bitterness. I often wonder about everyone, but I do not know what people remember of my last weeks at TC
