i didnt even know what this site was until about a year ago. it should be removed period! its AMAZING how many LIES can get started on here, but the sad part is all the people that believe them. its clear that half the people on her must have a pretty pathetic life! i wonder how many families have been torn about b/c of this site! i hope people can stay strong enough and not let this crap tear them down!

There Is a way to call and have it investigated to be removed but it has to be pretty bad before topix will remove it

Most people haven't heard of Topix and when they do, its already too late for them.

Hard to ignore when search engines treat made up stories like real news...

I read that, and other than giggling about them saying Google could be "unbiased" when they clearly meant biased, all I got out of it was some people don't know how search engines work, or the effect repeatedly googling a particular search string has on its ranking system. That, and the site you linked doesn't seem to know how to use meta tags in their source code.

I'll be the first to say that this site is more prone to user abuse than many, but there is nothing wrong with their model, they simply need more, & more active moderators, considering how widely the site's popularity has grown in such a short time.

The thing that really interests me, though, is the abuse problem seems most rampant in small towns, same as in the real world. If you don't believe me, look at the Topix forum for any major metropolitan city, and see how many average joes are being called out by name and trash talked extensively.

I suppose that the site could work if they did have a sufficient number of moderators, working actively seven days a week (and we all know that you can hire moderators in India, Manilla or stay at home Mom's, quite inexpensively) but they don't. I'm not sure that that's proof that the model is a good one, but I agree that it could improve things.

That the abuse is rampant in small towns I think has several reasons:

1) I think that Topix watches large cities more closely. You might notice that the URL for a large city Topix Forum wont show the state (ie - forums/city/chicago) whereas in smaller towns it does (ie - forums/city/corbin-ky). So there may be more careful policing going on there.

2) Large towns tend to have several legitimate media outlets covering them. Whether its related to Patch or Gatehouse or the NY Times there is likely to be other websites that people read. In very small towns, there simply may not be an online town source and so people default to Topix.

3) I think that in a small town where everyone knowns everyone, that online gossip is more relevant. If you go to the Chicago forum and talk about someone's affair, it may be like discussing it in a big ball stadium instead of a room full of fifty people.

No matter how you cut it, the fact is that there is alot of abuse and damage going on because of Topix forums abuse. Whether you want to blame Topix or the posters, Topix choses to not curb it and the motivation appears to boil down to money.
