On This Day: Transcontinental Railroad Completed

On May 10, 1869, the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads were connected in a ceremony in Promontory Summit, Utah.

It's interesting to note that Judah surveyed the Feather River Canyon & Beckworth Pass, only to declare the route unfeasable...
That same route was the where the Western Pacific ran it's rails very successfully, and the Feather River was the scenic crown jewel of the entire California Zephyr route...
The Western Pacific's slogan of "The Feather River Route" must have been a vexing thorn in the side of those who said it could not be done...

What a marvel of engineering. The American spirit is definitely alive in the transcontinental railroad.

Sad that so many people died. I guess that's the american spirit, using immigrants.
