FALFURRIAS — A 52-year-old man was in an intensive care unit but in good condition Friday after a bull gored him during a Falfurrias rodeo Thursday night, a Christus Spohn Hosptial Memorial spokeswoman and rescuers said.

Rene Saenz, 52, was opening the gate to a bull pen when the 900-pound animal rushed at him and punctured his lower left abdomen with its 10-inch horn, according to The Associated Press. He was able to jump the fence to get help.

Saenz was taken by HALO-Flight to the hospital.

The rodeo was part of the town’s annual Fourth of July celebrations.
