I had the pleasure of visiting in August 2012. I shot pictures galore. I realized that a restaurant I had lunch (Freemans Low Country Fish Camp) was used in Heat's filming of the episode where Chief Forbes goes into an Army Navy store to look for German Handcuffs, the character 'Cowboy' had used a pair to handcuff his girlfriends beau to the bottom of the pond. I cannot think of the actor's name who played Cowboy, but he was 'Ray' from tv series Dallas. Anyway, back on topic, the restaurant was the former Army Navy store. As I was walking to my car after lunch, I noticed the houses across the street and began snapping photos, as 1 appears to be Virgil's house, and the next home was used to film the interior of Atty Sarah Hallassee's home in the 2 hour Heat Movie starring Stacy Keach. And I noticed that I was apparently on the location from many scenes of Vampire Diaries. Can anyone confirm this? This town is truly a wonderful town. I wouldn't mind pulling up stakes and relocating. I am visiting again in a few weeks, and I wanted to confirm the addresses of where Virgil Tibbs lived and the address of where Chief Gillespie lived. Where was "The Bottoms" filmed, and where in town is a great place to look at and review Heat and Dukes of Hazzard props, photos?
Yes, The Vampire Diaries films here as well, check imdb and search for Covington, GA and it will list most movies and tv shows that have filmed here, I think it is close to 50, and the TIbbs house is actually across the street from our old library with the big white church in front of it, you should have visited the welcome center when you arrived as they have maps with all of the filming locations for most of the moviwes that have filmed here.

I too am a great fan and watch the series everyday on WGN. Plan to visit Covington this June 2013. Can anyone tell me if the homes of the Tibbs and the Chief are still standing and what kind of condition are they in. Anyone know anything about the 'bottoms' the McGuffy House the Magnolia Cafe
I sure don't want my image of Sparta to be spoiled if the town and the homes, etc is in disarray. Thanks for any information

I wish I could have been there to meet all the actors. I watch the reruns all the time. I'm now a cop because that show inspired me. In the heat of the night is badly missed.

The mill and the river is located in Porterdale, right outside of Covington. But they also used some of the old mill Houses in Milstead outside of Conyers and Monroe.

Was there in 19976 and again in '97. I had lunch with some of the "regulars" at on of the places on the square and found out some information about the years that ITHOTN was filmed in the town and in other local venues. Apparently, the drugs were such an issue that O'Connor shut dow production more than once. Howard Rollins jus coul not control the drug addiction and it finally cost him his job. The city of Covington even barred him for life after he was arrested for driving 80-MPH through town. I plan to go back there this summer. Does anyone have information regarding the original filming dates of every episode. I have the telecast dates, but would really like having the production info.

Every show used Sparta Police prop that I've ever seen (aside from the decal that I linked to in the post above... that's mine) has been owned by a prop shop here in Atlanta. Most of the large police door decals were affixed to large magnets for use on the show. They are still active rental items.
Please email the location of the prop shop in Atlanta. I would likw to visit and maybe purchase some of the old props from the shw. This is a passionate hobby of mine.

Just visited Hammond La. And think I spotted some familiar scenery from the show. The courthouse and the park across the street. There wasn't anything else that stuck out. Interesting though.. Wonder why they moved to Georgia?
