Everyone knows that the Mayor is a veteran. He's been over heard at this event annually telling everyone this. Very shameful Mr. Lowery!

The parade starts at 1:00. It would be nice to see St Francis Street and St Catherine lined with people to support the Vets. Seems like people are too busy these days....and the young people just don't get it.

Hope the see the Rat family and many others.

Are the Vets Groups still mad at Lowery for the selective editing of the Parade footage? Something about certain groups being edited out or certain historic flags being digitized?

When my cousin, Tom Hogan, was in Desert Storm I asked him what we could do here in the states to show our support for the troops. He said "go to the Veteran's Day Parade". Since then- I've never missed one. It is a very small way to express your gratitude for the men and women who have served in our armed forces. While I agree that the turn out is sometimes embarassing- the event itself is very moving- very informative. If you really want to meet a hero- go to the parade and say thanks to a Veteran.

This coming Sunday, November 8th, starting at the Old St. Ferdinand Shrine at 1 pm, The biggest and best Veterans Day Parade in the area, with over 200 units, and a live Apache Helicopter flying the Parade will begin.

The Parade begins at 1 pm, heads up St. Francois from the Shrine to Florissant road, then one block over to St. Cahterine all the way to the Civic Center. There will be announcement and celebration at the Civic Center, and the Copter will be on display at the Civic Center.

The weather will be great, the event will be great, take the time to visit and support the Vets.

Sunday will be for the Vets, lets support them and their special day in North County.

Veteran or not I do thank Lowery for his efforts to start having a Veterans Day Parade in Florissant. The council does have three veterans. Hernandez was in the Marines, don't know if he deployed to any war zone. Podleski was in the Airforce and Schneider was a Navy Seabee and served in Vietnam. He usually rides with the Vietnam Veterans in the parade. No matter what oppinions we have of these men we should at least appreciate their military service and the service of all of the other Veterans in our community. I will watch the parade with my family as I have done for the past several years.

The problem was with the display of the confederate battle flag by the sons of confederate veterans. They were asked to fly the American Flag. The stars and bars is considered inflamatory by some people. The sons of confederate veterans is an official veterans organizatin but it is on a watch list of an anti defemation group.

It's apart of our American history, just sounds like more whiny P.C. crap. And as far as being inflammatory, it's a flag, don't confuse it and all the southern born Americans that believed in it and fought and died for what they thought was right and modern day skinhead radicals! Stand up for what you believe in if it harms no one. Support our troops even if you don't support our government.

Long before the swastika was used by the Nazis it was an ancient symbol dating back to the neolithic era. It originally was a symbol of "good luck". But the problem with the swastika today is that is is associated with something evil that occurred in human history and also some extremist ideologies.
The problem with the confederate flag, or southern cross, is similar. Since the Ku Klux Klan has appropriated it for their use, the original symbology has been overshadowed by the KKK use as a symbol of their extremist views.

Very well put! In addition, Veterans day really should honor the sacrifices made for the continuous evolving of our nation into what it is today. Not only did the Confederates oppose the United States in a great war but the Confederate notion of government was noticabley different in that they believed in an aristocracy with a class system that limited opportunity not only for black slaves but also for poor whites. For many they are as out of place as German, Italian or Japanees from WW2, NVA or Viet Cong, North Korean or Chinees from Korea etc.

Thanks.
But maybe we are JUST being "politically correct" in pointing out these facts. After all, people do have the freedom of speech and it does not have to be "politically correct" speech.

Maybe calling someone "politically correct" is just another way of saying, "You go ahead and be aware of the facts if you want. I don't really care about facts if they interfere with my ability to say whatever the heck I want to say no matter how mean, ignorant or inconsiderate it might be."

So we don’t have to rehash the confederate flag topic, view last year's discussion.
http://www.topix.com/forum/city/florissant-mo...

I think they should be allowed to fly the flag for historical purposes, but personally I would not find any honor in it.

We have a very peacfull reverent togetherness appreciative parade and it would be even better if the Sons of Confederate Veterans would display a flag that simply said "Sons of Confederate Veterans" and refrained from the divisive stars and bars confederate battle flag. That way they would be participating in the parade and identifying themselves and honoring their forefathers and not intentionally offending anyone. That would be an honorable solution and would work if there was not some hidden agenda. My guess is that they will insist on the offensive flag to promote a subtle message of intollerance.

The veterans of the Civil War are patriots and just as truly Americans and "vets" as the Union Soldiers or those Americans who fought in subsequent wars. Keep in mind that symbolism is in the Eye of the Beholder. While the Stars & Bars was appropriated by racists & KKK types, it was the flag the Confederate Soldiers fought under and is an historic symbol that is not necessarily meant to "intentionally offend" anyone as you state. It is a symbol of their HISTORY and to them, not a symbol of hate, but of honor, the honor of the battlefield, the fight, the sacrifice. Many Confederate Soldiers went to war not completely understanding the judgment that history would put on their "reasons to fight." (And those who win get to write history.) Many went defending their homes, their families, their land, states rights; they were not necessarily defending or fighting for slavery or hatred against blacks. If it turns out in several decades that Afghanistan or Iraq were another Vietnam, and in several decades the "Sons of Aghanistan" march, will we demean these soldiers because we judge that they fought for some cause we find "offensive," like "Big Oil" or world hegemony?

Symbols, and WORDS, carry many meanings to those who perceive them.

Recently a man who managed a Schnucks put up a big crucifix and it caused a big hoo-haa. Why? Because to some, Christian crosses symbolize intolerance, bigotry, even sexism. To others, it is a symbol of love, sacrifice and faith. Some wanted it down. Some didn't care. Some fiercely defended its presence in the store.

The Sons of Confederacy have a right to fly their historic battle flag. They have no INTENTION to offend anyone. They are historical re-enactors, not racists.

Well written post. Please allow me to politely comment. The Veterans who fought for the confederacy were an honorable foe but they fought for a cause for which there was no excuse! They did not fight for the American way that has evolved and in fact they fought against it and they fought hard and the turning point came not in the south but in Pennsylvania at Gettysburgh during an invasion of the North by Lee! It is fine that the great great grandsons of confederate veterans want to celebrate their history but if they want to fly and pledge allegiance to any flag other than the stars and stripes let them do it someplace else and on another day.

Daily Horoscope for December 27

Libra

You're full of empathy and affection today, so it would be a shame not to spread it around. It's a marvellous day for a low-key get-together with some of the people you haven't seen during the past few days, because you'll enjoy having a good chat about what's been happening. Once your social duties are out of the way you'll love curling up on the sofa with a good book or a favourite film.
