Now that it looks like we are settling into a long downturn in the economy , maybe even a depression, will the decades long white flight from north county slow down or even reverse?
Lets face it, in today's economy far fewer households will have the financial ability to move out of the area just because they want to. There is anecdotal evidence that more young whites are moving to the area because of its affordability .
Not wanting to start a race debate here, just wondering about your thoughts.

something such as white flight has its ups and downs. For Florissant, it seemed that especially from the very late 90s to a coupld of years ago that moving from here to a place such as O'Fallon, Wentzville or Winfield was the flavor of the week. THe thing to do.

Thats a bit different now. I think the gas spike last summer really killed it. I also think another portion of society thought what was the point.

It seems at least to me that since the mid part of this decade, certain groups (mostly gen x and y) have been moving to the city and inner suburbs again. The loft district has been doing amazing in regards of how the city has done since suburbanization has started. The idea of wanting to live downtown 15 years ago seemed like it was something very dangerous. Now its slowly evolving back to a good thing.

Agree or disagree with me, I hope both areas do well. The bad part of it all, especially with st. louis, that both sides seem to hate each other. If they were to actually work together, STL could accomplish a thing or two.

Every race has its good and bad. I wish the people of Florissant and North County would realize what they have here. It is a beautiful city with well built homes. We have a lot to be proud of. Believe me the other areas have their problems just as we do, it is time we start working together and show St. Louis what we really are and not prove to them that they were right.

Since the public schools are predominantly black ,young white people with children will continue to leave the area.It is true if a person were blind to race,Florissant is much nicer than St Charles County. White flight will continue.

White flight will continue out of North County because people don't want their homes broken into by thugs that can afford to live in their neighborhood. Its just that simple, no matter if they are white or black.

Now that home prices are down there is just going to be more trouble in NC.

Wouldnt that happen anywhere though, including St. Charles County?

Raised in West-county, and my white family was pretty well-off. Hated it. Got a job and bought a very nice modest home in Flo-town. So much happier in a simple working-class area than in the materialism-race out in westco. This is a great area for starting a life. People need to learn that you don't need 3000 square feet of home to settle down and have a kid.

I don't want to sound racist because I am not,but can anyone tell me why when a neighborhood gets a lot of black famililes it goes down hill? Look around from St Louis City to Walnut park, Baden, Riverview, Jennings etc. These were all nice places until the blacks moved in and took them.

Who said anything about St. Charles? I'm thinking more like Creve Coeur.

You wouldn't know a good area if it jumped up and bit you in the nose.

You're right. I need a police scanner to check the actual crime in those areas and do a comparison myself.

As far as I know none of my friends that live in CC have gangs living down the street from them because they CAN'T AFFORD TO LIVE THERE. Get the idea here?

How short a memory some of us have.

Remember the murder last month of the single mother in the creve coeur home invasion incident?

The black famiies who have moved into our neighborhood are great... no problems (compared to a couple of whites who used to be here). As for those whites moving out of the neighborhood, it's older folk who have gone into assisted living, or nursing homes. Interesting cycle... we used to be the young with families when we moved here here 35 years ago.. now the old are moving out, being replaced by young couples with families. We'll be moving out soon too, I imagine... we don't need to be living in a 4-bedroom home; but I'll miss our neighborhood.

Your right about the blacks around here, at least the ones I know. They actually talk to me more than the white neighbors I have had forever. Black people dont scare me, crime scares me and anyone regardless of color can commit crime anywhere. I could move out to St.Charles but I would still be afraid of crime, so why even bother. Whoever said crime will go up more in NC because of the economy, I hate to break it to you but the economy is bad everywhere in the country, not just where there are more black people.

In my opinion, for what little that's worth, I don't think it has to do with race. You could have blacks, asians, latinos, or white-trash hoosiers move into a neighborhood and destroy it if they don't aspire to fit in with their surroundings. Too often, it is easier to bring a neighborhood down to a condition that they're used to rather than try to improve themselves and blend in with their new neighbors.

Many people like me who moved from Spanish Lake are more interested in property values and public schools. IMHO, the property values in general are higher in this area and the public school system seems to have a higher state rating score too. So it's not just a black/white thing. The vitality of a community while mostly subjective, means alot to some people as well.

I'll probably move out once I have kids. I don't care if my kids go to school with blacks, but exposing children of any social/ethnic group to black culture is just irresponsible. I see the shuffling pants draggers heading to McCluer in the morning.
