new to this and want to know who is worth supporting for mayor

I have lived in florissant for ten years this time. I lived here when I was a kid and now that I live here and am raising my kids here I'm trying to get more informed. i dont know if this is the best place to do that but it is the only place I have found.

Well you will certainly get "opinions". The "facts" are a little harder to come by since you have to sift through a lot of opinion, rhetoric and nonsense to find the facts in all of it.

Try looking at some of the older forums in the Florissant area and you will see a lot of "lively" discussion of mayoral qualifications and the possible candidates.

That is part of what I was talking about. Get use to it. It comes with the territory. Don't let it discourage you. There are plenty of good people who come here and they will offer opinions and advice that is based in sound judgment. But there will be plenty of irrational rants and rude commentary along with those rational comments.

Please don't Judge Florissant or most of the people based on what you read on TOPIX.... Get to know your neighbors, shop your local stores and visit the local eateries, go to your local church, join a local club or group, join in, have some fun in your community. You will find that the people and Florissant are really hard to beat. These message boards are not a good measure of the good people here in Florissant.

I dont understand some of you people its an easy question if the current mayor needs to go then who then who would be a good replacement and why. After reading the post on here I cant tell it's hard for some to stay focused. I understand that I am asking for opinions and that they very.

The last mayoral election had Mayor Lowery running against a new-comer, Andrew Podleski. Mr, Podleski recently unseated the previous Ward 6 councilman Dan Sullivan and is the sitting Ward 6 Councilman.

Mr. Podleski drew a large percentage of the vote in the mayoral election. Considering that Mr. Podleski's campaign was funded at a level of about 1/0th to 1/20th of what the mayor spent, he still came close enough in the vote to make the mayor and his supporters very nervous.(There was a story going around by some of the people that attended the election party that the mayor was very "unhappy" that Mr. Podleski got such a large percentage of the vote.)

It was a contentious race with accusations that the mayors supporters doing a lot of dirty tricks like stealing a lot of Podleski yard signs.(The mayors supporters blamed the numerous missing signs on vandals. Odd that vandals only wanted Podleski signs. There were also reports of pressure being applied to some who had Podleski Signs on their property.)

Mr. Podleski ran on a platform of bringing better fiscal management practices into city hall to stop the out-of-control spending and mismanagement that was documented on the Friends of Florissant website.

I have not heard if Mr. Podleski intends to run for mayor again. After his last showing, another run with a few years as councilman may be enough to turn the election his way.

But their are a lot of wild cards in the game. Local businessman and Lowery supporter, Mark Behlmann, recently moved back into Florissant and some speculate he has political ambition beyond his seat on the Hazelwood School Board. He is a frequent poster here at topix.

Other names have been toss in the air but there have been no announcements made by any candidates yet.

I voted for Mr. Podleski last time. I read his website and was impressed with his experience, education and ideas. After I finally met him I also liked his demeanor. If he runs for mayor again, I will vote for him. Since getting on the council he has been one of the few independent voices who acts as any sort of resistance or balance to manage the mayor.

Do your own Discovery, do your own research, form your own opinions and make your decisions. Some people think the Mayor should go, Some people think the Mayor should stay, and there are lots in between. You have choices. Do your homework, make your own conclusions, or, blindly follow which ever blogger on TOPIX that trips your trigger first.

Do you normally make it a habit to simply follow???

I think asking people here for opinions would be considered doing your own "discovery". It is an easy place to get opinions.
If the mayors supporters want to come here an expound on the wonderful things Mayor Lowery has done for the city, they are free to do that.
It is a lot easier, faster, cheaper to come here for opinions than to walk around town asking every stranger or Tom-Dick-and-Harry what they think.
Plus you get the benefit of rebuttals or two sides of an issue.

You know, like friendly "Bob" Lowery, lover of the City, lover of all the residents, friend to all and enemy to none.

The day after the mayoral elections, the "friendly Bob" signs come down. Once again, he becomes Robert G. Lowery Sr. patriarch of Florissant and don't dare say anything that may sound or be taken as a negative remark about me. Or I'll have my driver haul my butt to your house to attempt to intimate you.

Anyone who uses the opinions expressed on this TOPIX board, needs there head examined. Including my opinions. There is no substance to the ramblings that take place here.

The best advice i can offer on this is to ignore 90% of opinions you read in this forum until you can establish which characters/screen names seem credible, usually the ones who aren't afraid to use their real name. Most people who opine here are doing so based on assumptions and are downright ill-informed.
Now, if you want real information i highly recommend you go to the council meetings (watching it on cable access tv doesn't count!), and given your 'i love old town' screen name i strongly suggest attending mr Podloski's ward 6 meetings. To really find out how these people tick go up to them face to face after the meetings, shake hands, kindly introduce yourself and ask lots of questions while maintaining direct eye contact. I guarantee that you will be much better informed (and very surprised) compared to anything you will get from this forum.
