Why is this a new idea or message?. I believe I have been promoting this issue for years. Perhaps we could work on this together. As you can see, the words are almost identical to mine. Perhaps it has not become universal because I do not have the financial backing that Metro West has behind you. We should all work together to replace Holocaust memory. A yishur koach to Metro West and I appreciate your mention of my Holocaust Haggadah, but in reality my idea was taken and a grant was given to create this event. In addition, if you will note, I have created at least a dozen Holocaust programs that include the similar information to that which Metro West is using in the program. I have spent countless years working on this labor of love and would appreciate acknowledgement in the final program Metro West is producing. It would have been ethical for someone to have reached out to me as I did to Rabbi Avi Weiss.
Rabbi Dr. Bernhard Rosenberg
THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE WRITTEN BY ME APPEARED IN MAJOR NEWSPAPERS.. RABBI DR. BERNHARD ROSENBERG
A world without Holocaust survivors is not far away, said Rabbi Dr. Bernhard Rosenberg, township chaplain and spiritual leader of Congregation Beth-El.
Yet, very little has been done to create a liturgy to commemorate that most catastrophic event in Jewish history, said Rosenberg, who was born to Holocaust survivor parents in a displaced persons camp in Regensburg, Germany.
““Experience has shown that without a framework for commemoration, remembrance will not long endure,’’ Rosenberg said.““For more than 3,000 years, Jews have been reminded every spring of the Exodus from Egypt, at a date firmly implanted on the Jewish calendar that is observed with Seder rituals. Will the Holocaust, like the Exodus, be remembered beyond the generations of our grandchildren’s grandchildren? Very likely not if no agreement is reached on a specific day for remembrance, with prayers, readings and rituals adapted for the occasion.’‘
A prayer book, the Siddur includes a full traditional evening service for Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, in Hebrew and in English translations. Also included is an appendix with four suggested sample interfaith community programs and a large selection of readings, poetry, essays and other materials to help synagogues and community groups create their own programs. In Hebrew and English, the Hagaddah features essays, songs, and numerous explanations for a Holocaust Seder. Both were produced in honor of Rosenberg’s Holocaust survivor parents, Jacob and Rachel, as well as many family members who perished at the hands of the Nazis.
““I am deeply concerned that the Holocaust may be forgotten,’’ Rosenberg said.““Only by linking the Holocaust to ritual will the memory of the Holocaust survive other than just being a mere date in history. I am doing this now because time is running out as the last of the Holocaust survivors pass away. One may pick any of the numerous readings, poems or essays to incorporate into their seder or Holocaust service. There are so many that it is easy to create numerous different Holocaust programs from the vast amount of literature presented.’‘
Rosenberg said he hopes to raise the funds to convert the free online PDF into an illustrated hard-bound book for synagogues and community centers.
