I have a lot of relatives near Florence and Waterloo AL. Ever since I can remember I have always heard there is a face in the window of a man who was hung for a crime he didn't commit in a courthouse somewhere in AL. Anyone know where and are there any pics on the internet of this image? Thanks!!

Actually, it is the Pickens County Courthouse in Carrollton, AL. It is said to be the face of Henry Wells, a recently freed slave, who was falsly accused of burning down the previous courthouse. As the Lynch mob took him to exact vengance, he sreamed to them that, "If you kill me, I will haunt you for the rest of your lives!" I have been there and have seen it myself and it is facinating. There is now an arrow of reflective tape, which points to the face in the window and permanent binoculars across the street for viewing the window pane. The image of Henry Well's face can't be seen from inside of the room.

I had a high school chemistry teacher who lived near Carrollton, just acoss the Mississippi state line. He told us about the face many times, but we didn't believe him.

I'm here to tell you, it's there. I've seen it many time. Whether it's real or not, I can't say.

What it reminds me off is a drop of oil on water with holes for the eyes and mouth.

I was stationed at Columbus AFB, Mississippi in the mid 60's; my roomate was from the town of Reform and relayed the story about the face in the courthouse window. Needless to say, more than a few of us were skeptical and wanted to see it for ourselves. We filled a couple of cars with 18-19 year old GI's and drove to Reform. My roomate gave us a tour of the town (approx 10 minutes!). We arrived at the courthouse about noon and sure enough, an image could be clearly seen. A cousin of his was cleaning the courthouse and invited the group to come in to view the image from the inside...no image!! We kept going inside and outside but could only see the image from the outside. The group decided to stay until darkness fell and the strangest thing happened after dark...strange noises...lots of them. I have relayed this story to many people and needless to say, very few believers!!
Never saw it

Been there three times with a riding group. It's about half see it, the other half doesn't. I've never seen the face.

Roger,
I too was stationed at Columbus AFB. Except during the later 80's. I and a few other GI's went over and saw the face in the window as you did 20 years prior. It can be seen plan as day. We talked to a few locals and they shared the same stories as others have posted elsewhere. It does have to be seen to be belived. We didn't get to go inside like you did. So I didn't get to experiance the inside - outside comparison like you did.
Anyone else reading this should go and see for yourself if you have the chance. Very Interesting.

It's gone!!
The glass has been replaced many times over the years and the face always came back.
However, since the removal of the rebel flag in Montgomery, the face was said to frown fiercely and suddenly disappear.
