Engineers, as drivers, need to keep an eye out beyond their scope. It can be tedious just watching the rails but look ahead and move eyes and head around. Has the boy been spotted, perhaps the braking of the train would have happened much earlier.

What could these boys be possibly doing on a track at that time of night..

It's a shame, but obviously it's not an honor student we're talking about.
I've seen what a train can do to the human body, it's not pretty.

Jesus you people are callous. I grew up in FP, and remember walking the tracks because too often the adults seemed to want to do nothing for the kids to give them something to do, and it seems nothing has changed.

Maybe the Village will take something away from this and do more to offer the kids something to do, other than hanging around on corners and walking the tracks. If people in the Village are looking for something positive to come from this tragedy, maybe that is the one thing.

I am sure everyone who is so brilliant at pointing out this kids moment of poor judgement are perfect people.

Have some respect, the family and friends do read these things, how would you like some stranger to burst in on you grieving a loved one and having such awful things said.

Between this and the other thread, I am really fearing for the future of this country, and not for the kids, but because of the callous adults, because adults should know better than to post such stupidity.

You assume he was playing chicken, but you have no clue. Maybe he just simply stumbled and couldn't move, who knows, but cut the family and friends some slack and unless you have something positive to say, then hold your tongue. Its a little obvious it was a mistake on his part, but what you are doing is pre-meditated. Think before you click that post comment button.

To the friends and family, my condolences and please understand that those who post all the negativiity on these boards are a loud mouth and unintelligent minority. Most people want nothing more than to express sympathy.

This is about the third or fourth time this year someone has died from my old school. By the way, all of you retards need to shut the hell up about this kid. He was a really good kid, and I knew him, and he is not the idiot you people make him out to be. You don't even know, so shut the hell up.

honestly everyone who is saying something bad or degrading about Phelim really needs to stop..I understand you would like to voice your opinion, and everyone does have a right to do so, but at a time like this, if you do not have anything nice to say, please do not say it at all. He was an amazing kid, and could always put a smile on someones face..he will always be remembered <3

Life is so short to read all the comments it makes you wonder why God even bothered to create us. Either you are a pessimistic jerk or an optimistic fool. There is no happy medium I do know one thing that no parent should ever have to bury their child. My sincere condolesences are extended to the family, friends and all who knew and loved this boy.

What ever happened to giving a griveing family a little respect? All you people who are judging what he did or as petty as judging his name are ridiculous. We were all 17 at one point, get real and think if it was your child.

Are all those spelling mistakes supposed to be a joke, or did you graduate from Floral Park Memorial HS?

Yes the family is suffering from their loss and should be given some respect for this. And we all should think about the actions here, we are the first to be critics of others when something goes wrong and sometimes we have to take a step back and think about some of the irrisponsible things we have done in our adolesence.

those of us that have children, just have to stress harder to ours not to wander near the tracks, for one it is criminal tresspassing and the fact that it is close to as being dangerous if they would walk along the roadway.

flesh against steel, usually you won't survive.

p.s. for those english majors, forgive the spelling errors this morning...

Yeah blame the engineer don't blame the kid for trespassing. You would think after all the accidents we had with kids being hit by trains that kids would smarting up about staying off the tracks.

Daily Horoscope for January 4

Leo

Even though you usually pride yourself on being the strong silent type, love has a way of unlocking your tongue. The words coming out of your mouth may be familiar, but your sense of timing makes all the difference right now. Keep in mind that you never know how a risky gesture will work out, although you can always hope for the best. When in doubt, take the more cautious path.
