I have been a resident of Floral Park for over 20 years and have lived in the same residence. About 4 years ago new neighbors moved in next door. Unfortunately for me, they are pot smoking, yuppie like people with 2 or 3 young children. Recently they have taken to lighting huge bonfires in their backyard directly next to my wooden fence and garage wall. I have called the police numerous times to complain about the safety concern regarding the fires, which they often leave going for days at a time (even when they are not home). The police come, and nothing gets resolved and to make matters even worse, the neighbors have now taken to yelling profanities at the members of my household when we walk to our car down our driveway or if we come into our backyard to do something. Any suggestions on how to handle it? I have addressed them personally already about this issue.

Yeah, I have a suggestion: Quit whining about everything. Let them live how they want to live. They do it at their house, better than on the streets somewhere out in public. Get over it. Not everyone is going to live like you - miserable and bored out of his mind.

I am having a hard time believing this, considering how harshly FP enforces its codes. There is NO WAY the Village would let someone repeatedly set a bonfire in the backyard and leave it burning. Call the Fire Department, not the Police and report a fire. If this is actually happening, they will want to put a stop to it.

You're telling me. It is so ridiculous. Now they know I complained about them so the other night the husband took some sort of "instrument" to my car and scratched the hood. Considering I dont have any video of the action, there is no proof but the day after it happpened, he came up to me and said something along the lines of "oh wow, what happened to your car? Obviously you pissed someone off"

WTF!!!

Oh right, I forgot that the FP Village Police are putting their high paying jobs on the line taking bribes so a person can burn garbage in their backyard.

Yeah, I will have ask my friends on the force about that one to see how much that will cost me the next time I want to burn something.

Get a home surveillance system, you will be surprised how cheap they are. Record your neighbor burning stuff in the backyard, and point one at your car to keep an eye on it as well. Nothing better than having video proof.

Yeah, exactly what TruthHurts said. I'm having a hard time believe your little stories as well. You don't seem too serious about taking action. If you were, you would of already had surveillance around the house. You're a joke. Leave your neighbors alone and let them live however they want. What's it to you?

Yea, you sound balanced. Living next do neighbors from hell is an awful experience. Too amny FP cops are inept and lazy - Once my car was broken into - the cop came and asked if I want to file a report. I pointed out to him a trail of radiator fluid from the car that pulled up along side that smashed my car window. I dol the cop, why don't you follow the trail since the crime was committed maybe 15 minutes prior. He said, "Wow, that's a good idea." Another time my house was vandalized undergoing a renovation. The cop who responded said, "That's what you get for having such a nice house"

Well it has gotten far worse now. Despite citations and tickets from the FP police department, the neighbors have just increasingly become more inconsiderate. I would like to thank them dearly for snowblowing their snow right through my 1st floor window last week. It was such a blessing to have to have the window replacement men come to replace my window. Oh, and I also would like to thank them dearly for their pot party last night in which I think they smoked out the entire neighborhood. They are such a pleasure to live near.

you can also call dept of social services..if they are doing illegal stuff in front of young children, the kids can be taken from them..you're just going to have to invest in a surveillance system or hire an attorney

It seems as though you are the neighbor from hell--it's just that you picked on the wrong people. Is it really a bonfire or is it contained in a fire pit or chiminea? Those things have gotten really popular in the last few years. I have two neighbors--my next door neighbor as well as my neighbor diagonally behind me , that have been having these fires for several years now. One has a fire pit (the round metal ring) and one neighbor has a brick structure that resembles an outdoor fireplace. You have to remember that living in Floral Park is like living in Queens--the average property in Floral Park is 40 x 100, only 5 feet wider than the average lot in Queens--so you live in very close proximity to your neighbors. If you can't tolerate living in a suburban environment, you may want to consider moving on top of a mountain somewhere or buying your own private island. Leave your neighbors alone and I'm sure they'll leave you alone.

You don't live like you are in the woods when it bothers your neighbors. Idiots burn unseasoned wood in these things, and on a 40 x 100 property the smoke is going to invade other people's homes. This woman also complained about these neighbors smoking pot in their yards, and vandalizing her car. This type of presumably white trash should be the ones that move to the tops of mountains, or trailer parks at least.

First of all to address AuntKitty...they are not utilizing a fire pit they are digging a small hole in between the back of their garage and the side of mine and burning a fire that is NOT in some sort of structure. I am fully familiar with those outdoor firepits and fireplaces that people have, my daughter has one at her home. They start the fire a little before sun down and then leave it to burn off during the night.

Now to address what Peter Parker wrote, my feeling is that when you move to Floral Park you are fully aware of the rules/laws of the village. No parking between 3 and 5 am, no parking for more than 4 hours, no pools, etc., these people play complete ignorant fools. They get cited for something and then play the "i didnt know card". I am not the only one that has complained to the numerous authoritative boards in Floral Park about them, this has been an issue since they moved in. I have gotten surveillance for my home that happens to catch the part of their backyard that is a adjacent to my garage. I fully intend on contacting Social Services when I see the parents using drugs in front of their children.

Social services will not show up right away. If the FP police won't enforce illegal drug use, call the county.

I would probably contact everyone - your local politicians, police, fire and bug the hell out of them. This is unacceptable behavior. Neighbors these days are simply rude and inconsiderate!

Best thing you can do is do your best to ignore them. Put in thick, fast growing shrubs between your properties, privacy fences, etc. My have a drug dealing kid on our street, would make deals right on our block. Thankfully he's gone for now.

Peter Parker -

We did put shrubs up a couple years ago when they first moved in. At that point it was solely for privacy for when my daughter or son wanted to sit in the backyard and not feel watched. However, although the tree/shrubs are still there, our neighbors put some sort of bamboo fence up. I use the term fence loosely as it is not a permanent structure. They put it up with my shrubs as what is holding up the fence. The bamboo "thingy" is well over 6 feet tall but because it is not a permanent structure it does not break any laws. I dont find the bamboo thing, I mind that it is laying on my expensive shrubs but what can you do. It is funny though, that despite the bamboo "thingy" that they are still able to be so disruptive, rude and inappropriate.

If it is laying on your shrubs it is on your property unless your shrubs are over your property line. Temporarily remove your shrubs and put up a stockade fence to spearate your properties and hen put your shrubs in front of it so you dont have to deal with them

To Fed Up--The more I read, the more I realize that YOU'RE not the neighbor from hell--your NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR is the neighbor from hell. At first it seemed like they were just enjoying a backyard fire, presumably in an enclosed fire pit or some other structure. I didn't even imagine that someone would be that stupid as to not enclose a fire into something safe when we live so close to our neighbors. Peter Parker had a great idea--but, unfortunately we can no longer put up stockade fences, and even if we could, we can't put them high enough to block out rotten neighbors. Four feet is definitely not high enough. Then to make matters worse, the Citizens Party changed the local code so that we can no longer have a privacy fence. We now have to have fences with holes in it for goodness sakes!!!!
Did anyone actually SEE them blow snow into your window and break it? If so, you may be able to take them to small claims court. If the FP police are uncooperative, try filing a claim with Small Claims Court where you don't have to prove that they did it intentionally. Even if it truly was an accident, they are responsible for paying for it. I hope you still have your receipt for the replacement window because you will need it as proof.
Also, if you google Floral Park Village Codes or Village Laws you may be able to find the code referring to fire pits. I believe they must be a certain amount of fee away from any structure--their house, their garage, your house, youre garage, etc. And I am certain that they don't allow someone just to dig a hole and start a fire in the hole like that.
As far as the parents smoking weed in front of the children and setting a really bad example for their kids, I would try to contact Child Protective Services because it seems like child neglect.
