Two people killed by this low head dam and not one County or City official is taking credit for these devastating events.
Rob Mayes needs to pull his head out of the sand and fence off this area - all he has been interested in is charging all Farmington water users to acquire water rights for the Navajo people who live south of the San Juan River and in and around Shiprock.
What a travesty Farmington's leadership has become under the direction of Rob Mayes; his son having admitted to killing Dr. Nordstrum; a FFD officer admitted to mulching a local artist to death; a young woman committing suicide, or something like that, after drinking alcohol provided by the City via the FPD; another FFD officer arrested for DWI in Colorado - and this one runs the City Govt Restaurant at the Farmington Airport.

Robert will be missed by so many people, including me. He was definitely a one of a kind guy. May he rest in peace, and watch us all from above...

I sure wish the city would do something about that dam so that people can use the river without having the danger in that area...

This is FARRRRRR from a Farmington issue. Wasn't in the City. Ranting about Mayes regarding this issue is a waste of energy.

A lot of folks "tube", Raft and kayak the river with NO PROBLEMS.
Dumb is as dumb does....sorry. No loss of life is good, but he did it to himself, no one else to to blame.
You obviously misunderstood, and shame on you for saying what you just did about Robert...

All I meant was that I wish the city or whoever built that dam could find someway of not having that high risk area. It would be nice to enjoy the river without having the danger areas. Some of the rivers here in my area have been modified to where people can enjoy themselves without having any problems or expecting to die because of a dam...

The Navajos and Shiprock community has nothing to do with the drowning of a Whiteman in Farmington. Navajo water rights are separate issues and probably does not even concern you.

Actually I think this is some what of a city issue due to City Utilities owning and operating the dam and I am sure there is some shared negligence with the county. There are signs posted above that tell people to stay away and the area is somewhat secured but you can't put a fence across the river or you would have an equally as dangerous issue and it would cause other problems.

The Dam is never safe and ok to go through, they are called "Drowning Machines" in the boating and rescue industry. The problem is that some people are uneducated as to the dangers and many people have been over the dam and been lucky enough not to get caught so they are conditioned to keep doing it. Odds are against you to get out, if you go over, and if you get stuck there is a high probability that you can drown.

There is only one way to to make it safe and that is to remove it. Although the city probably would never do it, they could make changes to the dam to make it safer and even make it a place where recreation could take place. There are even some grants out there to assist with the remodel. Regardless people should take some personal responsibility and not go near it, not only is it dangerous for them but it puts rescuers at very high risk as well. Hopefully something is done to make it a safer place, perhaps in honor of those who have lost their lives.

Totally agree, this is a very hard place to get out of the river especially when water is high. Would be nice if something could be done to prevent more deaths. Lets honor the two lives lost by making it so no others lose theirs!

it was an accident and its as simple as that. rob was so adventurous and full of life and if you knew him personally you would definitely have a different opinion on this. this man was one of the most caring and sincere people i have ever known and its a shame his life ended so early.
for you to sit there and blame a remarkable man who lost his life in an ACCIDENT is pathetic. you are the one who sounds "stupid".

ROB WILL BE GREATLY MISSED AND MY PRAYERS ARE WITH HIS FAMILY. WE ALL WERE LUCKY TO HAVE KNOWN SUCH A WONDERFUL PERSON. RIP "VIN"

You are a moron. Take credit for the events? What? What does any of the other stuff you mentioned have to do with this story. Somebody drowns and it's the FPD or FFD's fault? Crawl back into your hole.

So sad! My heart goes out to robs family and his two buddies who had to helplessly watch a bro drown! I love the river and am an avid rafter and kayaker in the area. I know not to hit the dam and I know the area prior to hitting it and know I must head right. But there is no warning until you are pretty much right on top of it. If you hit it from the the left side you are in trouble because when you see the sign it's almost or in this case definitely too late. There needs to be more warning. A big sign a ways before would be nice, couldn't cost much, might save a life or two! And always, always wear a PFD!!! Safety first!

I completly agree. I find it absolutly horrible how people in this community talk about the dead, whether it was accidental or not. This has become such a hate forum. I feel very bad for this family and hope that they can find peace in this horrible tragidy. Whether it is a person being chopped up accidentally, or a boat sinking at the lake...we as a community need to be more respectful to the deceassed and their poor families that are left behind. Shame on the four corners area!!!

Your comment is so stupid. A person died and are taking that opportunity to bash Rob Mayes, etc.. Just send your condolences and don't make stupid comments.
