What a nice story for Father's Day. Most people don't know that about 70% of firefighters in the U.S. are volunteer. That's a ton... http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/statistics/department...

Once it gets in the blood of a family it's impossible to get out. I wouldn't be surprised to find that the percentage of departments that have more than one family member is more than 70%..

A great story, when we read about all the problems
in this world and families falling a part, it is so
uplifting to read something positive

Though a fairly good article - only 2 departments were mentioned, not very complete - My own department, Valley - District 1 in Kirtland has 2 father/son sets - one set includes wife/stepmom whose son is also on the dept. I am certain there are other volunteer depts in the county with a similar story - it would have been nice to at least mentioned the other depts with father/son sets.

I know the Hartwigs. They are really a great family and they really would help anyone. This was a nice article for Father's Day.

Typical, well maybe it is because all of you at District 1 are selfish hard headed and arrogant enough. Just ask anyone who has to work with any of you.
Maybe you should follow suit of the other districts and be as good as they are. Remember it is not who you think you are but what others think.

Not all of the members of Dist 1 are Selfish and Hard Headed. So man up and post your name when you make comments like all of you at Dist 1.

We want you to know that we the volunteers of District 1 are NOT selfish, hard headed or arrogant. We at District 1 are simply confident in our department and its volunteers. We are confident in our abilities to undertake the tasks at hand. We have trained and continue to train countless hours to gain that confidence. If it is taken as arrogance "Ha Ha", maybe that is just your own insecurity in your ability.(I don't know since you won't identify yourself, we also have the confidence in signing our names to our posts.) District 1 has the largest volume of alarms in the San Juan County, consequently, we understand the responsibility that brings to our department and take it very seriously, therefore, we know that we MUST be confidant in ourselves. We, Larry and Freddi have gone to many of the SJCFD sponsored trainings both ems and fire and felt like we could work and train comfortably with any other district. I am sorry "Ha Ha" that you feel the way you do, maybe you should come out and train with us and get to know us, we have training every Thursday at 19:00 come on out, love to have you there, this includes any SJCFD volunteer. SEE YOU OUT THERE TAKE CARE, Larry & Freddi
