The Amish do smell bad. They rented a home from me and the inside smelled like a barn after they lived there a year or so.They smell like cattle.

Any farmer back in the day would tell you that after long days in the fields and working in the barns, a person will definitely smell bad. I presently am looking to find a small place and live totally on the land. I was raised on a farm, and know the long hours it took to keep food on the table. I am a 55 yr old female, I have worked across the country from being a welder to managing a retail store, I have worked with the state and now retired. What I have seen across this country makes me know the more I want to find a peaceful out of the way place that has a not so commercial lifestyle. Amish are just like the rest of us which is trying to make it thru the day alive. Don't believe a little horse crap is as dangerous as the water we drink, the food we eat and the air we breath from the mass productions around us that we call Progress America, today.

Amen to that, ever read the ingredients on a package of hot pockets some feed to their children? If you make it at home you have 3 or 5 ingredients if you use natural ingredients. When Nestle makes them some of the hot pockets have a very long list of ingredients most of them extenders and preservatives. With an expiration date a year into the future. Most of the corporations involved in food are doing this sort of thing. Now they are talking about radiating the food with radiation, that would give it shelf life without refrigeration.

We also have the (genetically modified organisms, GMO) roundup ready grains and such. Recent studies on GMOs and plain grains in a study mice or rats grew on the plain grain, but the ones feeding on the GMO grains many of them died 54 percent if I remember correctly, a large number of them died or were stunted from the pictures they where less than half the size of the others and sickly looking, tumors, sterile . They put this stuff (GMO corn, soy beans) in almost all our foods every day.

Contrary to belief, Amish pay nearly all taxes

One of a number of myths about the Amish is that they donít pay taxes. Though the Amish may not always agree with the actions of the government, they consistently respect the laws of the state, which includes paying appropriate taxes.

Taxes the Amish pay include federal and state income taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, and public school taxes, even though most Amish send their children to privately run schools (which they also fund).

Amish exemptions

Amish do receive an exemption from Social Security, signing away the right to receive Social Security benefits in the process. Amish were granted exemption from participation in Social Security in recognition of the fact that Amish communities care for their old and infirm. Amish also consider programs such as Social Security to be insurance programs, which contradict Amish beliefs against participating in commercial insurance.

Though they are generally exempted from Social Security, in some cases Amish may in fact be required to pay Social Security taxes. This may happen when working for a business that is of mixed Amish and non-Amish ownership. Amish business owners are also required to pay Social Security taxes when employing non-Amish workers, or Amish youth that have not yet been baptized in the church.

I believe in the saying"to each their own" -they can live how they believe, but I do think that they should have to have some sort of catcher for the horse manure. That manure on the roadways is very dangerous-a vehicle drives thru it and try to stop, you slide and cannot control your car-it's like driving on ice!

maybe we should all think about what we're doing. Polluting the earth with are vehicles to run and get something stupid while talking on our phone or worst of all texting while driving. Complaining about horse manure on the road is pretty petty when all I see is ditches filled with trash. Hard working people who believe in a quality of life most don't understand. I think most people should sit back and think about where we're headed. I do, and I don't like the outlook.

Horse manure is not a petty thing. It is slick when tires run over it and brakes are applied! It is downright dangerous and unsanitary-horse sewer is what it is. I'm not complaining about the Amish I just think they should be required to keep the manure off the roads for safety of all.

You may need to slow down a little, most drive to fast anyway and most of the time their going nowhere anyway. How many have been killed by someone speeding to get cigarettes, beer or drugs.

Real smart, you could have spooked the horse and killed a person or family and very possibly yourself. if your riding at 80 miles per hour on a bike we will not have to worry about you to much longer anyway at those speeds you'll bury yourself in a ditch or hit a tree. I know of several who are in prison for such conduct, some for life because of a death, they have got several semi-truck drivers here lately for hitting Amish buggies when they were going to fast or under the influence.

I have never read, nor heard of any person or persons killed in an accident due to horse crap in the road. at least horse crap washes away in the rain, trash doesn't. To the person that was driving 80 in Mt Carnel, the speed limit is 35, then there's a cautions light flashing for 25 close to the store. I travel down that road everyday and can't believe how fast people are driving thru there, where are the state troopers at??
