Smoke Free

United States

#1 May 14, 2012
Most smokers prove daily how they don't care about the health and well being of others, with second hand smoke.
Now I am driving and you see these uncaring smokers tossing their cigarette butts out of their vehicle windows, and they end up on public sidewalks and streets and also on private property, they are littering and contaminating the environment.
If its against the law to drink and drive and to text and drive, it should be against the law to smoke and drive. Let's be able to turn them in.

Get a life. People like you are the people who will whine about cigarette smoke yet will stick your head over an outside grill or camp fire that is far worse for your lungs than a cigarette.

I think this post after I have read it couple times is about the littering that smokers do. I have never seen anyone throw an empty charcoal bag or charcoal into the streets from their vehicles after a BBQ, and I have never seen campers tossing burnt kindling or logs into the street from their vehicle after a camping trip.

Why? would you do it, what if people threw candy or food wrappers out of their vehicle windows into the street or maybe your yard, do you not care about all the litter you see daily because of people like you and their cigarette butts.
Cigarettes are the most littered item in America and the world. Cigarette filters are made of cellulose acetate tow, NOT COTTON, and they can take decades to degrade. Not only does cigarette litter ruin even the most picturesque setting, but the toxic residue in cigarette filters is damaging to the environment, and littered butts cause numerous fires every year, some of them fatal.
But let me guess, you were raised that way and you don't have a nice yard and you don't care about the enviornment, or maybe you think it makes you look tuff or like a rebel, it doesn't!

The chemical is in many products and is harmless to the environment. Check out the MSDS.

Cigarette butt litter makes up approximately 50 percent of all litter in most Western countries. It is estimated that 1.7 billion pounds of cigarette butts are found in lakes, oceans and beaches every year.
The filters of cigarette butts are not biodegradable and contain plastic in them. The plastic and toxins in the cigarette filters have the potential to seep into wherever the cigarette was disposed.
The chemical in the plastic part of the filter is called cellulose acetate. According to the Earth Resource Foundation website, the plastic of one cigarette butt can take years to decompose.
All the chemicals do not just magically disappear, they remain wherever that butt is deposited, whether it’s deposited in the ocean and on the beaches. A lot of the time, you’ll see them washed into the sewer systems … and then they go into the river system,” that kind of chemical burden is not good.”
Unfinished cigarettes have more of a potential in doing harm by increasing the chance introducing toxic chemicals to the environment.
They treat the tobacco leaves with chemicals so if people don’t smoke the entire thing down to the filter. A lot of the chemicals they treat the leaves with … they are still there. So if you just tossed it on the ground you’re gonna have leeching into whatever is below it — the dirt, the plants,” Long said.
Not only do the cigarettes themselves cause damage to the environment, but also the various wrappers that come with cigarettes.
A lot of time, the wrapper that goes around the cigarettes is equally as toxic, because in order to (avoid getting burned), you have to put things like fiberglass … it takes forever to go away in the environment, and it’s not exactly a clean breakdown process. It is a toxic breakdown process.
The Earth Resource Foundation states that animals, such as fish, birds, whales and other sea life, have been eating the plastic in the cigarette filters containing toxic chemicals.
After animals like fish absorb the toxins, they are sometimes transferred back to humans, smokers and nonsmokers, as food.
“There are millions of cigarette butts in the ocean, and we are drinking, swimming and playing in the water. We are also eating (animals) that are eating the butts or digesting all the chemicals.

I don't want to shock you but....

You are concerned w/ litter while living in chemical valley??

Have you had a look at the local water reports?

Did you not know that while you stare in disgust at litter, the power plants are raining heavy metals down upon you?

Did you know our fine little area is part of a cancer cluster?
Think cigarette butts did that?

It's a bit like worrying about a poodle when a lion is behind you.

Don't get me wrong, i salute you for even taking a moment to consider the environment.

Perhaps your anger would be better focused on one of the many major polluters that have decided to take a dump on our ol Kentucky home for profit.

Chemical Valley is in the Charleston Wva area.
And the closer Cancer Cluster's we have in our area are in Louisville Ky, and in Clyde Ohio.
The EPA monitors the pollutants in all areas and in all states, I am starting at the one rung of the ladder, where you walk not 10 steps in any direction and you see a cigarette butt they are in the parks, on the streets, on the side walks, on peoples private property, at the beaches etc.
And about some big plants, how about the cigarette companies they produce enough cigarettes that over 46 million adults in America smoke, and usually their children will be following them in that habit.

AK Steel,Air Products,Dupont,Catlettsburg refinery, these are just to name a few...
Hence my generic use of chemical valley.
As far as the EPA goes,a old timer @AK Steel once told me "they dump at night as the EPA is in bed".
The cancer cluster statement was a little off you are correct.
What i should have said was our area has a higher then national average for cancer deaths..
I could have also said that our area has a abnormal rates in respiratory illness.
I understand your angst in regards to toxic litter i really do.
Myself i have a environmental pet peeve of my own..
Monster trucks, big dual wheeled, diesel smoke spewing farm trucks.
Being used as grocery geters, never having towed a single thing heaver then the fat ass in the cab.
They can't properly drive/park them and they stink up the air anywhere they go..
But hey add me to the the litterbug haters list also.
Smoker i am,litterbug i am not

AK does not do any special dumping at night, there are EPA trucks that are monitoring inside the AK plant.
I too agree with the pollutants of large trucks they should be fined, and also Loud sounding Motorcycles that cause noise pollution.
But according to the National average this are is not even mentioned in high or above normal cancer deaths.

AK Steel DID dump massive amounts of sulfur dioxide @ night, don't remember the funky egg fart smell when going by there?
According to the Russell Council the land is too polluted to even be sold..

Perhaps you trust the EPA more then i do,after i found out we burn garbage for power, yes tires mattresses,w/e unsorted household trash comes in gets burnt.
I don't put much trust in them watching out for my health.
I'm not saying this area is worse then LA..but yea keep believing smokers are even remotely the worst polluters in the area ...

I say take your message to the street!
Demand the local government put in place anti smoking/litter laws!
And when you do..please take video and upload to YouTube so i can see what true defender of the environment looks like.

just wondering

So Air Products or any of the other companies that produce similar wastes had nothing to do with the smell that we all endure while making a trek down 23?

While i'm sure air products has there own unique stinks, sulfur dioxide is a byproduct of burning coal which is a necessity when producing coke.

Sulfur dioxide is the rotten egg smell that is so pervasive on a warm summer night.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfur_dioxide

AK enjoyed many EPA exemptions due to it's age, this is why it was able to operate in the manner it did.

All this is moot point considering cheap Chinese coke has made the plant obsolete.

What is a greater concern, the amount of heavy metals and fecal matter in our water supply.......

The intense hatred of smokers has been tolerated to long. This odd type of bigotry is socially acceptable because smoking causes cancer. Smokers piss them off smoke in public with electronic vapers don't call them cigarettes they are not. Look them up on line they work. smoke at home if you want Bigots can find someone else to pick on. Watch out overweight people I hear they're after you next

I have often wondered how they can determine second smoke has caused a lung disease but I have never heard of them diagnosing any 1 with DuPont disease.or any of the other chemical plants, and them nice new tires with that deep tread that seems to disappear driving up and down the road, yea your toxins to bleed in to the environment, car ever over heat well that should be good for several million cigs,

I am willing to bet that most of the people complaining about cigarettes being thrown out, are throwing out their candy wrappers, fast food bags, etc. FYI, your trash is just as bad! Quit b*tching & clean up your act before you ask others.
