Natural gas station opens

Full story: Asheville Citizen-Times

Joe and Kathy Miller pulled their Honda Civic into the new NC-CNG station on Hendersonville Road, just minutes after Buncombe County's first commercial outlet for compressed natural gas officially opened.

I agree. A reason it hasn't caught on, there has never been an infrastructure. Auto companies refuse to make the cars, fueling stations were not built. I'm glad to see someone trying to initiate the new way.

Ice cream man is really showing his limited knowledge. If he could see beyond Zebulon, he would know that the rest of the world relies heavily on CNG. Does he mean the US auto companies? The ones who are going broke? You might want to check out what Honda is up to. I think they might know a thing or two. I heard they even started making cars as well as motorcycles.

Every time I drive by this refueling station it is idle. I have yet to see someone at the pumps. It looks like a large investment and apparently someone is not getting there return on it. It's quite obvious that the automakers have very limited CNG offerings as evidenced by the lack of utilization of this new CNG station.

I like to buy "biofuel" that costs more than regular gasoline, too! That's why I live in Asheville!

According to the Department of Energy Alternative Fuel Price Report for July of 2007, "the cost of B99/B100 {Biofuel Blends} is higher than the cost of diesel fuel per gallon in the regions for which data were collected (except the Midwest), with the highest differential being 54 cents in the Lower
Atlantic."

If you have 54 extra cents per gallon to spare on biofuel,-not counting the fact that road tax has not been implemented on biofuels yet-, feel free to use biofuel. Otherwise, the average American will be happy to use regular fuel.

At Apple Tree Honda regular Civic costs about $18000, the CNG model sells for $26000. Their CNG Civic, with the 'It Pays to Be Green' sign in it has been sitting on their display lot since March.

CNG vehicles are fine - for an urban fleet, such as buses, etc.

I've seen bio fuels cheaper in some places. If I had a car that ran on bio I'd probably use it since there is a bio station down the street from me. Getting 50mpg would be nice even with a .54/gallon vig on it. It's a viable option, esp since the bio they sell here is made here, which keeps your money local.

Interesting post. An $8000 penalty to "go green" is not what the consumer wants to hear or see. The idle CNG station on Hendersonville road is selling CNG for $1.89/gal which is $0.70/gal cheaper than 87 octane regular gas. The Civic CNG owner would have to burn 11,428 gallons of fuel before a realized cost savings would show up. If the little Civic managed 40mpg in mixed driving that would be 457,142 miles! Yikes.

According to http://genomicsgtl.energy.gov/biofuels/transp... ,

"Ethanol has about 70% the energy content of gasoline per unit volume, so for every gallon of gasoline consumed, 1.4 gallons of ethanol would be needed to displace it."

According to the same site, however, ethanol does have a higher octane rating than regular gasoline, meaning, ethanol is "better {...} at preventing engine 'knocking' caused by inefficient fuel combustion."

Therefore, you are not only buying a more expensive fuel to buy biofuel, you need to buy more of it. Feel free to "go green", America!
