On Nov. 2, Northern Arizona University’s own Art History Society (AHS) will host its annual Dia de los Muertos Celebration. AHS will display elaborate alters dedicated to Mexican artist Jose Posada, whose influential skull prints are a staple in Dia de los Muertos art. With one located in the bookstore on campus and one in the amphitheater outside of the University Union, students can easily view these alters as well as buy handcrafted sugar skulls and painted candles, and have their faces painted for a donation. Also, there will be live music playing in the amphitheater. For the first time ever, AHS will be selling Dia de los Muertos artwork created by those in the society. The amphitheater will be open to the public from 2p.m. to 8p.m. and the bookstore’s celebration will continue throughout the week. All proceeds will benefit AHS, which prides itself on honoring and bringing global cultures to Flagstaff.

AHS President Theresa DiFuccia is ready to host this event and make it available to everyone, stating,“this year is the biggest year we’ve ever had. We’re doing many different things with Day of the Dead, including our expansion of goods we’re selling. Please come support our club.”

To experience the Dia de los Muertos Celebration off campus, AHS also has displays and activities conveniently located in downtown and at the Museum of Northern University. The downtown celebration will be held during the First Friday Art Walk in Heritage Square on Nov. 4. The museum celebration will be held on Oct. 29 and 30 from 9a.m. to 4p.m.

AHS Publicist Kiran Haynes stated,“It’s a diverse event. We’re offering a cultural experience that anyone can enjoy. It’s really about reveling in life and makes you more appreciative of the people around you. Essentially, it’s just a ton of fun!”

Students and Flagstaff residents are encouraged to bring friends and family for this culturally enriching and fun even!
