If they are not black, it would be crazy, if not impossible, for these young married part-time temporary low-wage no-benefit no-pension service and retail employees to qualify for or sign a 30-year mortgage contract. Do not scoff. How are they to pay it off? If they cannot legally rob, they need a stable secure well-paid job. How are they supposed to invest in a 401k, by the way. I fear that the last of those old [estate and inheritance] blue-collar good-job dollars are disappearing from here, with the parents and grandparents. This because we are running out of those thrifty smart grandpas and grandmas...but not our government Santa Clause.

..... If I would be again a student just having finished school, and couldn't live with my parents, I would regard marriage and homeownership to be luxuries that would have to wait. I would concentrate on getting a permanent job first and live very frugally, saving as much money as possible in case I would lose that job and may have to live without a job for a while. I would detest borrowing and would try to do without it if at all possible. Not even credit cards!
..... I would also explore all of the government's social service schemes that may or might not be publicised, but that could be available to me in an emergency.

With or without kids or working spouses, there are no more blue-collar dollars, at least around here I fear, to buy these empty brick ranch houses, with papers taped onto the windows; unable to be bought by baby daddies, Obama mamas, drug dealers, pimps an' 'hos. Despite the rich-people hates, there are fewer and fewer inheritances and estates, making more people equal, people who, by the way, will not be investing in Wall Street or 401ks. The middle-class lifestyle, with college, retirement, benefits and pensions and vacations, slipping away; older prosperous people and their jobs and incomes not being replaced in the Obomy service and retail economy.
