FITCHBURG -- Police are asking citizens interested in improving their community to attend a neighborhood watch meeting at Wednesday night, at 6 p.m., inside the police station's community room.

"Neighborhood watch, at least in Fitchburg, can encompass all of the things that make a neighborhood safe," said Police Chief Robert DeMoura.

Topics up for discussion include building compliance issues, such as trash, fire hazards, gasoline storage, smoke detectors and heating appliances, which DeMoura said all contribute to better neighborhoods.

"Together we can make a better community with some simple prevention steps;" he said.

Residents will be encouraged at the meeting to go door-to-door to organize further meetings with police.

Police plan to present and distribute proven methods that make a community more friendly and open to help solve crime concerns, said DeMoura.

"We are ready to help residents that want be more involved with their police department and work together," said Mayor Lisa Wong .

Chief Demoura could help the cause by allowing citizens that have the appropriate training to obtain a "Class A" gun permit instead of arbitrarily limiting or preventing qualified people from getting them.

To restrict the ability for lawful citizens to protect themselves is contrary to the message they are saying here. Stop talking out of both sides of your mouth chief.

You've got that right. Why not just add NO GUN ZONE signs under those new Welcome to Fitchburg signs and pretend that will solve the cities crime problem? This is all just a bunch of bullshit to fool the masses and provide a false sense of security. This city has been turned into the welfare capital of the state long ago by the liberal elite who used state funding as a means to flood the city with dependents so they could “annually” qualify for Government aid, virtually importing poverty and crime into the city faster than it could ever be eradicated. Had limits been placed on the “social service bureaucracy” the poverty level and crime in the city may well have been reduced significantly? When the economy is flailing and state aid is reduced, the city's financial dependency on government aid became even greater, putting itself in the posture it now face’s. How many city's in the state need a police detail at their downtown grocery store. Welcome to Fitchburg.

I'm thinking Candidate Lynch definitely needs to be at this meeting. Maybe this time he could grow some balls and say something like he's been on here doing for all these years. Do you think Darn Tootin might show up too?

What's the problem? I solved this years ago.

We got an airport, right?

We got some money, right?

We know most of the cops are lazy, right?

So, we take our money and buy some of those drones and use the airport as the base of operations.

Load up them drones wit a couple of machine guns and a few bombs and a camera, right?

Problem solved.

Stamos, can you tell us what you think should take place in Fitchburg concerning crime?

Stamos, you have pages of criticisms but I haven't heard any ideas nor proposals from you.

So, can we label you the town complainer?

We need to build a community in Fitchburg Stamos. If you live in Fitchburg I encourage you to begin to join in with the community.

Fitchburg is worth the effort. We need to encourage businesses to set up shop in Fitchburg. Presently we have a tax rate of 25.26, we have a lack of access in and out of the city.

We need to begin to address the drug addiction problem. We need to begin with drug use prevention. We need to educate all local government and public safety employees in reference to drug use, alternatives to drug use nd drug addiction treatment.

If we want to address a problem we need to put all he facts on the table and to begin to honestly address them with real solutions.

Unfortunately, our local government and public safety personnel have false facts concerning methadone treatment.

We need to clear this up before we can move on in addressing this cities substance abuse problems.

Methadone is not a synthetic Heroin involving when it concerns the "getting high" effect that those addicted look for.

"Purpose

Methadone, formerly known as dolophine, is a psycho-active drug, meaning that it affects the mind or behavior. It belongs to the class of opioids, drugs that share some of the analgesic properties, and mimic the action of some of the body's naturally occurring chemicals called peptides, such as endorphins and enkephalines.

Methadone is used to relieve chronic pain in cancer patients and as a maintenance drug to control withdrawal symptoms in people undergoing treatment for opiate addiction.

In opiate addiction treatment, methadone blocks the opioid receptors of the brain that bind opiates such as heroin. The blocking of these receptors leads to two major effects:

•because these chemical receptors remain blocked by methadone for up to 24 hours, even if a person addicted to heroin takes heroin after the administration of methadone, this person is not likely to feel the same effects of the heroin as he or she previously felt;
•because the action of methadone is associated with slower and less intense withdrawal symptoms than those of heroin, the patient can experience milder opiate effects while the addiction is being treated and avoid the unpleasant withdrawal symptoms associated with heroin.

Methadone has also been shown to reduce cravings for heroin while not altering a person's mood."

A portion of root causes concerning this cities crime problems involve drug abuse.

We need to fight crime and limit drug dealing of these illegal drugs and at the same time we have to treat those addicted.

We have a segment of our population that is just fed up with all this drug addiction which is completely understood.

This group wants the drug situation to be exterminated from our city which is understood.

What we haven't been able to address properly is how to go about this extermination of the city's drug addiction issues.

If it was as easy as extermination then it would have been done already. It is not, we need education, law enforcement and the community working together with an open mind.

First we must educate all local government and our police concerning drug addiction. Such addiction can find anyone from any economic class of society.

Methadone is one of the many tools. Sometimes drug addiction is a way for some to self medicate. There is a log list of drugs that our doctors prescribe to the general public including police officers, Mayors, city councilors, firefighters, carpenters, electricians and the list goes on forever.

Some of those employed in these professions do not need any prescription to a drug. And then there are some who feel that valium is not needed at all for anyone.

I am not promoting to deal with drug addicted citizens with kindness and total empathy. I address an active addict with "get off the pity pot of poor me what about those around you that are negatively affected by your behavior?" Some addicts have children that are affected negatively due to their parents drug abuse. They must understand this fact and others and deal with it.

Methadone is not the cure all either as many in recovery are totally against its use. All I am stating is hat we need to address our drug problem head on. Putting a label on it and placing people in this category and calling them names will not fix the problem. If properly utilized Methadone can be a positive tool in addressing some addictions.

Everyday our public safety has been picking people up in car accidents who stated they just left the methadone clinic on Airport Road. All these people still resembled a person who took heroin.

I don't care if methadone affects the person differently but a methadone user is still dangerous to other innocent people. Too bad public safety is not allowed to disclose the facts of the numerous car accidents that happen everyday in our city.

Uh, sorry but public safety knows all about drug addiction, they don't need to be educated, they have to take mandatory courses and classes every year.

Here you go again blaming society for drug addicts? Nobody is forcing them to stick a needle in their arm. Your mentality sickens me. WHAAA I got fired so I'm gonna do drugs and cry about it!!!! Then later I'll go to the Methadone clinic and get high again for free! What is your major malfunction? Don't you realize that your selfishness is costing the rest of us money?

Let me guess, you either slept in a Holiday Inn last night or have been doing research online? So somehow this makes you an expert on drug addiction?

Here is an idea that most experts will tell you, stay off line and actually talk to the people that deal with people addicted to drugs.

The most absurd thing I have ever heard you say is that public safety needs to be educated.

Really? Think about it. Every 10 minutes they deal with a drug addict that overdoses at McDonalds on Kimball Street at the Cleghorn rotary. Do you really think they have no idea or education?

You are starting to sound as ignorant as the other person (O'Halloran) who thinks he can run in ward 2. An Irish man running for councilor in a Puerto Rican - French section of the city, really? hahahahaha.
