So now the City is going to be overly concerned about the River St area...well there are ALWAYS prostitutes near the 'Otherside" strip club on Water St. They hang out by the bridge right at the corner near the lights too. If you want to clean out the city of prostitutes the logical first place to start would be to shut down the strip club. The very type of scum bag girls you want to deter from streetwalking are also the same type of nasty strippers working there. Shut down the place and see how many of the prostitutes move on out of Fitchburg. Or are you saying you only want to get them out of the River Street area? Well of course thats all you want.

How's about when they ARE arrested, test them for HIV. If they're + and get arrested AGAIN for prostitution, charge them with attempted murder instead! That'll get em' off the friggin' streets.

Get rid of their clients and you'll get rid of the prostitutes. Get ride of their clients and you'll get rid of drug dealers.

The common denominator here is clients.

A guy opens a business in a known prostitution zone, then repeatedly calls the cops to complain about prostitution. Any of these businesses could have opened 6 or 7 miles south (on more expensive real estate) and not had this problem. Here's a city with nothing doing for real economic development, or health and building code enforcement on an overabundance of very cheap but very old and decrepit apartments ~ and the problem is not enough prostitution arrests? I guess treating the symptoms are just easier than coming to terms with the problem.

BTW 'solutions' thank goodness people like you aren't alowed to just shut down establishments just because they don't suit your superior moral standard. It's a legal business serving real demand for its services. Sorry you don't like it.

This is one of the hidden jewels of the place and now they want to take it away. How else are the fine citizens going to replace this source of income and recreation? Once again the Burg proves why it is regarded as masshole of the state.

I wonder how high the fines are. A company that runs a legal business can be fined more than $10,000 for calling someone on the do not call list. Soliciting someone in person for prostitution is much more offensive than making a telemarketing call to their house. I'm betting the fines need to be upped.

How about we improve the economy and get these women training / assistance so they don't have to live this way. AND legalize it - police have real crime to fight, they are busy and under-funded enough as it is

The problem is not with the women.... it’s with the men out for the service. Arrest the men, put the names and addresses in the paper on a daily basis and see what happens. With out the paying client the women will move on to a better location.... maybe Leominster.

The problem recently got the attention of Ward 3 City Councilor Joel Kaddy. He spoke with Police Chief Robert DeMoura about the problem last week, after observing five prostitutes working between the Cleghorn Rotary and KC's Pub within a 30-minute period at about 9 o'clock one morning.

This line is funny…you are JUST noticing? Are you kidding me? Are you not also noticing the drug selling that goes on in the area over by the mills???? Oh no of course not….it just has to be pointed out…. It has been going on for years and years and years….and people have told both the police/state police and city hall for ages. But nothing is ever done. What you do is put it in the newspaper so they can find a new location because they know you all are coming. I knew you all happened to be not so bright to begin with but this tops it off!! Yeah!!!! Fitchburg good job….. hehehehehe not! You all in city hall and police department spend too much time… visiting the “walkers” and druggies and not arrest them…DUH!!! Time to tell the truth!! LMAO

A simple fix

Sterling, MA

#18 Jul 15, 2010
It's an easy fix, really. Just legalize drugs, then sell and tax just like tobacco, and booze. This great war the US has had on illegal drugs in the US for the past 50 years has been a complete failure. Prohibition did not work in the 20's, it's not working now !!!
Put, and keep, the real criminals in jail.

Police have also said it would start the beat patrols also, with the so called Public Safety Grant, last November as they been courting this increased public safety thing(Fluff) for two years, in meetings with the public. All we have gotten from a Public safety Grant is a full time city Lawyer to show for it, that has nothing to do with Public Safety. ALL TALK NO ACTION..Nothing has changed,How can you increase public policing, when there is no funds, and we may have to layoff additional Police? Talk is cheap, action so far has been worthless. Public meetings to discuss this issue, amounts to a Joke on Fitchburg! Who's kidding who here??

They are not just on River Street-they have also spread into residential neighborhoods. Up near the Annex, High Street and Marshall Street. I have seen them on the Blossom Street end of Marshall also. This is ridiculous. My husband was also solicited in the Dunkin' Donuts parking lot. Early on a Sunday morning. Ridiculous.
