FITCHBURG -- Michael Marcil, interim police chief at Fitchburg State University, died unexpectedly on Friday night.

He was 51 and is survived by his wife and three children.

FSU President Robert Antonucci said on Saturday that the cause of death has not been confirmed. But he said Marcil had a medical issue sometime Friday night and was taken to HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster where he died.

"I just spoke to him last week about his future plans," said Antonucci. Marcil had been on the school's police force for about 28 years and was planning to retire in seven years.

"One of his daughters is expecting twins, the other just got married. He was very much a family man," said Antonucci.

Marcil lived in Lunenburg. His wife is a school teacher.

Marcil was the senior lieutenant on the school's police force until longtime Fitchburg State University Police Chief James Hamel retired at the end of December and Marcil took the helm.

Antonucci spoke with Hamel on Saturday about what happened.

"He was devastated. They worked together for so many years," Antonucci said.

Hamel was with the department for 40 years and Marcil had been his second-in-command. Antonucci said Marcil made a smooth transition as interim chief because he worked closely with Hamel and knew how the department operated. He said some officers move on to municipal departments, but Marcil never wanted to leave. He just loved being at FSU.

Lt. Benjamin McDonald has been named acting chief. He couldn't be reached for comment.

Antonucci said the university should have a permanent chief picked in about a month. Marcil was not interested in the job.

"He liked being a lieutenant, but he became the acting chief when I asked him," said Antonucci. He said that was typical of Marcil, because he was eager to do anything asked of him.

"You could called him at 11 at night and he would jump in that cruiser and go, and he never complained," said Antonucci. He said Marcil was well liked by other officers and a number of them went to the hospital to help comfort his family.

"This took everyone by surprise. They were a very close family," said Antonucci. He said Marcil has a large extended family in the Twin Cities region, with many of them attending FSU, including his children.

So, so sad. Only 51 years old. God bless him, his wife and his 3 children. What a shame.
