Local businesses that buy and sell gold and other precious metals could soon be required to track their vendors, as the Leominster Police Department is petitioning the City Council to amend the city ordinance to require it. Full Story

I find it hard to believe that they don't ALREADY have a tracking system for precious metals! That is giving a green light to all the lowlifes to dump their stolen items in Leominster!

The criminal tht steals your gold is really going to give his real name and address, right? Won't deter thefts but will let the authorities track where every ounce of gold is within the city!

I don't think you understand what the Leominster PD would like to do.
They want to keep a record of people who sell gold in Leominster. What does that have
to do with how much gold you might personally own, nothing !! What gets me is the
mayor wants to send it to sub committe. Why does everything have to go to some type
of committee before it's passed as law? What a waste of time and money. Just
go to another city that already has the law on it's books, and copy same.
It's simple, really.....

They should be doing this with all metal including scrap copper that they are ripping out of houses.

What a joke. Mayor - are you serious? Take a good long look at the constitution; gold IS money. Is local law enforcement going to start dictating to local businesses how much cash can be accepted in a business transaction before it should be recorded with the police department?

Big brother, step off. And people, invest in security because you have a lot more to worry about with regard to the falling value of your U.S. Dollar. Precious metals are not increasing in value. Gold and silver are nothing more than alternatives to fiat currency.

This knee jerk reaction is doing nothing but responding to a symptom of a very real and growing global economic crisis.

Sorry folks, take the advice or don't, but the globe is now rushing into PM's purely as a direct result of a loss in confidence in fiat.

Gold does not change in value. Only unbacked currency changes in value; it goes down in value as more more is printed because more dollars chasing the same goods in the marketplace is the definition of inflation. Compare gold to oil. Compare it to other commodities.

This just makes me chuckle. The government is formed by we the people, who state that money can only be gold and silver because it cannot be inflated out of existence. A private banking cartel manipulate a corrupt government into giving them control over the money supply. They remove the gold standard. Naturally gold goes up. And government then wants to track gold to "protect the people"

I would encourage the mayor and all others in local government to take a long step back and try to understand the big picture, because knee-jerk ordinance is only going to hurt local businesses, not help protect people.

You going to start tracking all barter?

This is old news. Scrap yards everywhere require photo ID, license plate of vehicle etc. when ever you bring scrap metal of any kind for cash on account of the crooks cutting it out of buildings. Just a sign of the times. Gold/silver should not be any different.

it's really sad that people have no conscience to just go into people's houses in the middle of the day and steal. my mother lost things, that their worth in memories are irreplaceable. Lost items that she had to remember of passed loved ones. So what is the solution? Do nothing? i agree making this a huge thing and spending too much money to figure out how to stop this is crazy. However, being a little less easy on how to sell gold and track might make it a little more difficult for the crooks to get rid of their gold so quickly. why should we have to spend money on security systems to protect us and pay taxes for the city to protect us too. Showing a license and identification isn't difficult and would make it a little harder for people to just sell things,(they would have to leave the city instead of just opening the door wide open for them, and make other arrangements to get money for the gold). This maybe would deter them from selling in leominster, and also not stealing in leominster. It's worth a try. It was too heartbreaking to see my mother so upset and the city do absolutely nothing.

Where are you from?? Go to Benson Street in Fitchburg with all the brand new copper you can bring, you don't need any identification.
