Councilor Tran,
I applaud you. The chief is dead wrong. He spoke out at a public forum and has overstepped his bounds. I think it would be wise for Fitchburg to review past applicants and dump DeMoura before he causes more damage. In this economic crunch the Commonwealth doesn't need to be spending a dime on these illegals. As for fingerprinting this should be done at the RMV at the time of issuing a drivers license. Perhaps this would also cut down on forgeries. Stick to your guns Councilor and keep up the good fight!!

We opened the doors to them," DeMoura said. "We were all immigrants to this country at one time or another."

Kudos to Dean Tran for having the courage and good sense to speak out against this ridiculous proposal by DeMoura. Where is the rest of the City Council? Maybe DeMoura should focus his attention on fighting the ganges and crime in the city.

Keep it up Dean!

Lets stop kicking the can down the road, illegal means against the law. The police chief should be inforcing the laws he has sworn to uphold. Making or changing a law is the responsibility of congress,do your job chief.

We should be making it tougher on anybody that is doing anything illegal.

A license makes life easy. Anybody commiting a crime should not have things easy. Let them answer to employers, banks, bars and public assistance officials as to why they DONT have licenses...instead of just handing one over.

Ditto, to that. What a literal COP OUT ! We really need to form our own forum/protest physically to see how many of us agree to disagree with this Chief. Please keep up the good work Dean and please let us know when we can have a meeting to voice our thoughts and opinions.

What dimes are we spending by allowing illegal immigrants to apply for licenses? They would have to pay for the license and registration fees, car insurance and inspections just like everybody else.

Are you suggesting that everyone who applies for a license should be fingerprinted, or just illegal immigrants?

Good for Tran. And as Homer said, we didn't open the door for the illegal immigrants. And if your work visa ran out, follow the rules and the law, and return to your country. Demoura should be fired immediately. He is a gisgrace to the badge and a disgrace to this community. Everytime Demoura opens his mouth he sounds like a bigger and bigger idiot. No wonder his officers don't respect him, he's a dolt.

I cannot believe that anyone in law enforcement could make such a statement and defend it as "good policy". Illegal is illegal. It's what law enforcement is all about.

No, we were not all immigrants at one time or another, as the Chief stated. Yes, my ancestors were. They came here legally, learned the language, and became naturalized American citizens. No one handed anything to them as a matter of "good policy".

The fact that the Chief just assumed that people at the meeting all got rides from legally licensed drivers tells me he is willing to look the other way if it fits in with his agenda. Sorry, we need a chief who is tough on crime. Clearly, DeMoura is not the man for the job.

A person with an expired visa did not originally come into this country illegally. Can you blame them for wanting to stay here? You must know how fortunate you are to be a citizen. Would you want to go back to a country with very limited opportunities for you? Have you considered that someone who is that motivated to improve their circumstances might eventually become a model citizen, if given the chance?

I am extremely pleased by the objections given by the city council members quoted in this article, especially Tran.

But what is up with this section of the article? It makes no sense:

"'His actions should be to uphold the laws and doing anything different will result in a movement for his resignation,' Tran wrote.

DeMoura said he assumed all of the immigrants at the hearing got rides from friends or family who have legal drivers licenses. He did not think it would have been appropriate to stop any of the people coming to or going from the hearing to check their licenses."

Tran's comment doesn't shame DeMoura for not pulling people over on the suspicion that they don't have licenses, does it? It would make more sense to conclude that Tran was referring to the fact that DeMoura's proposal to give "undocumented" immigrants licenses would condone illegal behavior. Nice try S&E.

Given the chance? OK, fair enough, but explain to me the people that have been here for YEARS, for example the young 18 year old girl. She didn't have a chance in the past 18 years to become legal? I understand it's a whole process, she'd have to go back to her country, wait, then come back here when it was all settled, but that's how it is. Follow the law. It's not like opportunity isn't here for you when you get back...that's why it's America.

So, are these illegals going to have to take a driving test at the RMV to get their licenses, or will the Chief just take their photo and hand them a FREE license ?

Last time I checked THE REGISTRY OF MOTOR VEHICLES issues licenses, not the police department.

"Someone who is that motivated to improve their circumstances" should do the right thing and take the appropriate steps to gain citizenship.

They can only be a model citizen once they are a legal citizen. Until then they pay no taxes (no S.S.#= no taxes) Work Hard, Play by the rules and pay your share. I have no problem with anyone one who wants to do that.

It's nice to see that he police chief has his finger on the pulse of the community's sentiments regarding illegal immigrants. Based on the comments posted so far, the chief has certainly not impressed the citizenry.

May I suggest the chief finds himself a good oral surgeon. Removing his feet from his mouth could be a challenge.

If they are truly as motivated as you state, then why can't that same motivatin be applied to working the process of staing in the US legally? No, they seem readily capable of breaking the law and ignoring their responsibility to leave the country. Sorry, they aren't making the rules, the ruls are in place. They are lawbreakers and should be treated as such.
