OH! so it's ok for a city employee (on the clock) let's say an EMT to use the ambulance to drive home and meet a home adjustor for there own personel use during company time?

I wish it was funny. But it accually did happen! Conducting personal residential business during city (company) time, using a city (company) vehicle.

I just hope no one was distressed at the time needing an ambulance!

Look it happens all the time.... I don't really think its a "perk"..... most of the city vehicles in Leominster are pieces of crap anyways, it's not like they are taking home 50K dollar BMWs... However as quoted in the paper, it only costs about 300 dollars a year in fuel to drive home. thats not the bad part. its the wear and tear on the vehicle, and the liability if the person gets int an accident....

As for the police chief "needing" his vehicle before he goes to an accident, what is topping him from just stopping at he "scene of a crime" with his personal vehicle.....and honestly how many times does this happen? isn't there sergents and commanders for this purpose..

the wiring and water and building people.... how many emergencies are there at night?.... I think they could use their personal vehicle as they would driving to work to complete their task.

The wire inspector drives a 2008 Ford F350 (far from a piece of crap) that get very poor gas mileage to begin with. He lives 15-20 miles away on country roads and is at least 30-40 minutes away (at best) during good weather.

He's also an inspector in the community and should not be doing any work in the community he works in because it's not legal as it is a conflict.

Every inspector at the City Hall drives old cop cars that were no longer suitable for use in the police department because they are unsafe. They have duct tape holding them together and rattle when they go by. I would be more concerned about there liability since there were reports of them not even passing inspections in the past.

We aren't saving anything letting these "first responders" keep their vehicles at their homes. As for the mechanic at the Fire Department, he can get there when he gets there, the other 5 pieces of equipment will do fine resucing the cat in the tree or unlocking the car door!!!!

You want to save money, tell people to call AAA when their keys are locked in the car

Why didn't the mayor say how many people were allowed to take their vehicles home and what their jobs are? I believe he doesn't want disclosure about that. If we knew, we'd also know most of the people aren't first responders anyway. It's a perk for all but the fire and police chiefs. And this mayor doesn't mind wasting our money. Taxpayers don't owe anyone a free commute to work- no matter how the mayor "spins" it.

Also, why did the mayor gather these people to tell the press how much they need their vehicles? Why isn't he more worried about the taxpayers wasting money on these vehicles? Who in this world thinks it's better to pay a wiring inspector overtime with free commutes to do jobs other electricians could bid on without ot?

He thinks we're fools who will buy his crap. All he has to say is "it's for public safety"- he thinks. Well- I know better. I've seen the families get out of city vehicles at local stores on numerous occasions. They use them as personal vehicles- and we pay for them to have that privilege because our mayor said they could.

Seeing that the wire inspector lives more than 10 miles from Leominster, does he reimburse the city for Gas, as stated in the article? Also, Leominster has 2 wiring inspectors, use both of them, instead of 1. The wiring inspector is also responsible and is on call for all traffic signals in the City also.

Then again, the wiring inspector bills the city for OT on a regular basis. As far as who takes vehicles home, a formal "freedom of information act request" will get you the information.

I have no idea why the Chief of Police takes a cruiser home to his house in Westminster. He hasn't investigated a crime or made an arrest in 20 years - why does he have a cruiser at all?

This is a "Perk" that needs to stay under a microscope. This and a lot of other unchecked expenses are what drive up our taxes. The minute we let up, the abuse returns.

Direct quote- "Mazzarella recently gathered all of the city's employees who take a vehicle home at night so they could explain exactly why they believe it's important."

So, the mayor held a press conference so these employees could explain why it's important to take city vehicles home?

Where was the press puppet? I thought no one could talk to the press but through her? Seems like there's a "do as I say, not as I do" thing going on with the mayor. That's surely not the way to earn respect!

No city employee should be in a city vehicle off the job. The liability to the city is the same if they get in an accident driving around Ashburnham as it is while working. This porking of the Leominster tax payers has to be stopped!

I see the fire chiefs car always in front of his house parked all day all night what good is that? Go park it at the firestation. It's no secret the bologny that goes on and how city and school employees get away with not showing up to work on time, taking long lunches, saying they are at one place when they are really at home. You people better watch out cause pictures are being takin and you will be reported. Their are plenty of people out of work while you a**holes get away with everything.

Are you kidding, 10 miles? Wow. How about Deano's campaign manager, Roger Brooks and his new Explorer? Roger and his girlfriend Kate Griffin (also on Deano's hack payroll) commute almost 40 miles EACH WAY, to North Brookfield, Massachusetts. I guess in Leominster Deano takes care of his pals and any girlfriends they(or he have) by simply adding them to the Taxpayer's back.
Also, is his Royal Highness Deano saying that the guys working nights and weekends at the Police & Fire Stations and the DPW are too stupid to handle whatever comes up? If that's what he thinks, why are they working weekends at all. I believe those crews can handle about anything that comes their way, just fine. The stupid ones are the taxpayers that keep re-electing this self-serving scum bag.

Roger Brooks and his WIFE Kate Griffin Brooks DO NOT use a city vehicle to commute to and from North Brookfield. Also Roger's "new explorer" is a POS Chevy pickup hand-me-down from the Forestry Dept that sits in his spot as most of the time he uses his OWN vehicle to drive even to City Hall. Stop spewing ignorance.

Oh yeah? Since when?
Maybe since the day after the first Sentinel story highlighting all the City vehicle abuses.
It didn't take Deano long to get the word out to his boot lickers to lay low with the city vehicles until this "blows over" and the taxpayers forget about it...

Well, the gray Ford Crown Victoria that is parked in the mayor's space at City Hall doesn't appear to be used much at all these days.
