people with Schizophrenia do not kill. That disease is a mild mental disease without violent intentions. The man knew exactly what he was doing. Science will prove it once again in court. His evaluation at the Hospital will come back as sane to stand trial. That is because of the facts we know of this disease. No mental excuse will be allowed. Criminologist will be asked and will affirm my assesment.

I'm sick and tired of people using the Mental Illness as a defense for such crimes. I HAVE BiPolar and I've never killed anyone or committed such atrocious acts. This is why Mental Illness has the stigma that it does. Suddenly everyone who kills has to have BiPolar, Schizophrenia, Aspergers or some form of Autisim as part of their defense. Why can't people just accept the fact that we've got Sociopaths, people with no soul or conscience and just plain evil walking around free. It's the same as that Odgren kid who killed the boy in the schools bathroom. He's got Aspergers and he didn't know what he was doing. B.S. he didn't know what he was doing! Start looking at and treating these monster for what they really are - MONSTERS who deserve to be locked away. If every single person that had a mental illness killed someone, there would be no one left to kill. This defense is a cop out and a lame one at that. As long as people allow for this as a defense, the stigma against those of us who do suffer from Mental Illness will never go away.

You are wrong. Schizoprhenia is NOT a 'mild' mentall ILLNESS (people in the know don't call it a disease!). It is very dangerous if not controlled by medications. This is a very sad story for all involved. My prayers go out to the family.

Let"s start blaming these "Lawyers" and the whole frigging jurdical system!! How many more voilent crimes, murder, rape, armed robbery ect, will land the perp. in prison for 5-15 years 1/3 rd of that time served! Then they get out ,have a home, job medical, transportation all courtesy of us taxpayers WHAT A JOKE! So,if anyone is to blame, lets start with these $150+ hour Lawyers and judges!

Regardless of what anybody's opinion is on mental illness, it really isn't the point! A son, a husband and a granddaughter, as well as many others, have lost someone very dear to them. Let's not forget that a woman has died! God rest Lisa's soul and may her family and friends find peace.

I also work with those suffering from mental illness and I can tell you, just because you have that diagnosis, it doesn't necessarily mean he did not know what he was doing, especially if he was taking his medications.
A diagnosis of mental illness should not automatically equal a "get out of jail free card."
The question is, did he know what he was doing? Given the fact he had argued with his mother just prior to this incident, it would seem to indicate he did this out of anger and vengeance. Regardless, he should not be out in society.
My sympathies to this family and their friends.
Which article have you read stated, "Thomas argued with his mother", do you know him or the family? Unless you know Thomas, refrain from jumping to conclusions that he knew what he was doing. This poor family has been torn apart by this trajedy, they have lost their dear sister, mother, daughter, granmother, niece and wife at the very same time have lost their son, grandson, nephew ect. Evidently he was very sick and lost it if not to do honestly think the family would of let him stay in the same house, seems to me noone was afraid of him. God bless this family my time heal all of your pain and suffering.

Bernie, are you a psychiatrist? If not, your statements are merely uneducated opinions, which you certainly are allowed in the good ole USA. But, to clarify, please read the following:
HERE IS THE DEFINITION:
Paranoid Schizophrenia
Paranoid schizophrenia is noted by the presence of paranoid delusions and auditory hallucinations. These individuals are differentiated from others with schizophrenia in that they do not have a flat affect. Paranoid schizophrenics are particularly a concern in hospitals due to their higher risk of sudden violent behavior a testament to their immature ego defense mechanisms.
DSM 295.30
Let's let the educated, expert mental health physicians attest to this boy's condition.

Which article have you read stated, "Thomas argued with his mother"

It was reported on Channel 7 news that he had argued with his mother prior to the attack.

<Evidently he was very sick and lost it>

Were you there? How do you know he wasn't just angry and decided to act on it? You don't know if he had any past issues or resentments that boiled over in that moment.
Yes, this family has lost a mother and grandmother and it is a terrible tragedy but it will be up to the authorities to determine if it was deliberate or not.
It is premature to assume that he didn't know what he was doing. That's up to the medical authorities and a court of law to decide.
Yes, this poor family has suffered a terrible tragedy. My prayers and sympathy go out to them all.

It is not about Leom vs Fitchburg, it is not about mental illness, it is not about the justice system, it is not about "obama care", it is not about the channel 7 report vs the papers.

It is about losing Lisa. A great woman, who will be deeply missed.

Please respect the privacy of the family.

people love to judge so quickly in these situations. if you weren't there, if you didn't know Tom, then you have nothing even remotely important to say about this. most people here who say negative things, are home alone all day with nothing to do but go on the computer and see who they can pick on today.

Schizophrenics are typically not violent and are more likely to harm themselves than others. They are withdrawn and prefer to be alone.
Violence is certainly not a symptom of schizophrenia. I'm not sure where you're getting your information.
Besides that, I didn't read through all of the comments but I didn't see where the article said he was a schizophrenic or a paranoid schizophrenic.

YouKnow,

Please realize I am not claiming that Mr. Scesny is a paranoid schizophrenic. I only commented to the portion of the article, which is quoted below, that stated he was on several meds for paranoid schizophrenia.

Additionally, please find below the definition, in part, of paranoid schizophrenia, which includes violence, as stated in the The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which is the standard classification of mental disorders used by mental health professionals in the United States.

Unlike many comments here, I am not relying on my own uneducated opinion of this disorder. I am simply negating the misinformation that paranoid schizophrenics are not violent as based on the DSM.

Sentinel "The attorney appointed to represent him Tuesday, James Gavin Reardon Jr. of Worcester, explained Thomas Scesny had been taking several prescription drugs as treatment for paranoid schizophrenia."

"Schizophrenia and Other Psychotic Disorders > Introduction > Schizophrenia > Schizophrenia Subtypes >

295.30 Paranoid Type

schizophrenia, paranoid.

"The essential feature of the Paranoid Type of Schizophrenia is the presence of prominent delusions or auditory hallucinations in the context of a relative preservation of cognitive functioning and affect. Symptoms characteristic of the Disorganized and Catatonic Types (e.g., disorganized speech, flat or inappropriate affect, catatonic or disorganized behavior) are not prominent. Delusions are typically persecutory or grandiose, or both, but delusions with other themes (e.g., jealousy, religiosity, or somatization) may also occur. The delusions may be multiple, but are usually organized around a coherent theme. Hallucinations are also typically related to the content of the delusional theme. Associated features include anxiety, anger, aloofness, and argumentativeness. The individual may have a superior and patronizing manner and either a stilted, formal quality or extreme intensity in interpersonal interactions. The persecutory themes may predispose the individual to suicidal behavior, and the combination of persecutory and grandiose delusions with anger may predispose the individual to violence. Onset tends to be later in life than the other types of Schizophrenia, and the distinguishing characteristics may be more stable over time. These individuals usually show little or no impairment on neuropsychological or other cognitive testing. Some evidence suggests that the prognosis for the Paranoid Type may be considerably better than for the other types of Schizophrenia, particularly with regard to occupational functioning and capacity for independent living...."
