WOBURN -- Escorted into court under heavy guard, a former MCI-Shirley inmate was ordered held on $10,000 cash bail after being accused of escaping the prison to allegedly hunt down and kill a man at a Springfield barbershop to avenge his mother's shooting.
In Middlesex Superior Court on Friday, Tamik J. Kirkland was held on bail after pleading not guilty to one count of escape. His next court date is May 29 for a pretrial conference.
Police allege that Kirkland, who was serving a 2 1/2 to four-year sentence on firearms charges at the minimum-security facility in Shirley, escaped by fashioning a dummy in his bed and escaping out a third-floor window onto a fire escape. His escape wasn't discovered until seven hours later.
Kirkland's escape triggered a statewide manhunt that lasted for five days. On April 30, Springfield police responded to a report of a shooting at Bill Brown's House of Beauty, where the barber, Darryl King, was wounded and customer Sheldon Innocent, 24, of Wilbraham, was killed.
The Republican of Springfield reported that Kirkland's mother was recovering from being shot on April 23. The newspaper reported police believe Kirkland was trying to avenge his mother's assault.
Police received a tip that they could find Kirkland at a nearby home.
As police arrived at the house, they noticed a woman parked backward in the driveway and a man jump into the trunk of her car.
When police opened the trunk, they said Kirkland came out firing, shooting a state trooper and a Springfield police officer. Both officers were wearing bullet-proof vests. They were injured, but able to return fire. Kirkland was hit six times.
In Hampden Superior Court, Kirkland has been ordered held without bail after being charged with the murder and armed assault with intent to murder for allegedly wounding a second man at the barbershop, as well as wounding a 15-year Springfield police veteran and a state trooper.
Kirkland's alleged accomplice, Trevin Smith, of Springfield, was ordered held on $500,000 cash bail after pleading not guilty last year in Springfield to accessory after the fact. Smith is accused of helping Kirkland flee the barbershop.
