How do you fine an 80 year old woman for not clearing her sidewalk?
Easily. Write the ticket, put it in her door.

There are responsibilities that come with homeownership, don't like it, don't own a home.

I don't remember UNITIL ever shoveling the walks infront of their building on John Fitch Highway. Maybe a fine equal to a percentage of their revenue stream would solve the equipment problems of the city. Fines to commercial and industrial owners should reflect their size.
they didn't shovel the side walks in front of unitil they used a bobcat to clean them.

hahahahahhaha "bust their rear ends" thats a joke, they get most of the main streets done, but they don't bust their rears, they get paid quite well and all they do is drive around in a machine, by the way...do they wait until after 3 to go out to do this, because thats when i tend to see them out doing it..the city dpw is a joke in itself, its time for a change down there!!

Believe me the dpw workers of all towns work their rear ends off everyday. do you honestly think you can plow 250 miles of sidewalk with ONE sidewalk plow within the 8 hours they work if the storm takes place during the evening. Drop them a line and let them know how this can be done, I'm sure you wouldn't mind sharing your super powers with them. As for their pay, unfortunatly it is so minimal that its not even worth arguing over. in case you didn't notice when you see a city truck their is usually only one worker in the truck, no back up in case of an accident and when working in the middle of a busy street in town alone it just a matter of time. Instead of complaining why don't you let them borrow your magic wand. Problems solved

If all property owners or renters would simply remove the snow on the sidewalks in front of their residences all would be fine. If you're a senior citizen, I'm sure there's a neighborhood kid who would love to earn a few bucks for clearing your sidewalk. Come on people, let's work together.
I'm tired of hearing the crap about if you don't like it, move, your responsibility, etc. etc. etc. The city ordinance holds homeowners to a higher standard than the city itself. Homeowners have 4 hours after a storm to clear the sidewalk. I'm also getting up there in age. It takes me a couple of hours to do both my driveway and my sidewalk. The sidewalk comes first, because the mail needs to be delivered. Those who don't live with their front steps right on the sidewalk just don't get it. After exhausting myself with the shoveling, the plow then comes along and pushes all the road snow & chunks of ice right up on to the sidewalk, and sometimes onto my bottom step. Our side of the street gets it double because there are parked cars opposite us that have NEVER been ticketed or towed in the 35 years I have lived here.(Nice when you have connections).

The city needs to establish a more reasonable ordinance regarding this before talking about fining people. After all of the time I put in clearing the snow, I would refuse to allow them to fine me after the DPW deposits more on my doorstep.

Not only are the sidewalks not clean, but the street that I live on gets new curbing almost every year, and the firt time that it get plowed, all the tar is ripped up again. You can see it all in the snow on the side of the road. So $ is used every year to fix this, while the road has big sink holes that haven't been fixed....

Someone should put an article in the newspaper regarding elderly neighbors. If anyone has elderly neighbors they should look out for them!
If you have a snow blower just continue past there house! Always be considerate to your neighbors! If you see trash in front of houses it doesn't hurt to use a plastic bag from the grocery store as a temperary glove and pick up the trash around your area.
Definitely look out for your neighbors. I notice a lot more respect between neighbors lately which is good to see! Everyone is having it tough; have patience with each other!

I have a friend who works for the Fitchburg DPW, and some of them do work their butts off and have had no pay raise in the last 3 or 4 years. This is Fitchburg we are talking about. Always running understaffed and with broken down machinery. He told me during the last storm, it took trying 3 different trucks to get one that would actually run. Now, the bozoís they subcontract to plow are a whole different story. It appears you just need a plow and donít need to prove you can actually operate it. The guy who plows my street is a subcontractor and constantly plows snow from the road, up over my stone wall and onto my private property. They have broken the wall several times. What do you think the chances are of getting reimbursed for the damages to my property? Slim to none I'd guess.

there should be more sidewalks in the FSC campus area. Again. Why are the FSC non taxpaying, students the ones with all the perks?
They get to park where ever they want. They make the roads narrower by parking on the side streets(Lincoln and Rindge in particular) Sure they put no parking signs up on half of Lincoln, but not on the other half where there are NO sidewalks. And why are they allowed to park on the side of Rindge when there is a parking lot for them RIGHT THERE?! Never mind the free parking and shuttles from the Wallace Civic center(is it even a "civic" center anymore since the college bought it?) and from the Commuter rail station. Many of the students claim they dont even know about these options for parking. Why is this?
Why are the local roads being made narrower by student cars?
Hell. Residents around here would love some sidewalks to be plowed. And some more enforcement of parking bans etc as well. You want to cut busing and have kids walk? Then make sure it is safe for the kids to do so. And for the parents dropping off to be able to safely make it down the streets to drop and pick them up!!!
Lincoln; if you drive down cedar street;95% of the cars on the street are college kids;Deal with it! They get ticketed if they violate parking laws.

I agree that these kids party too much and leave bottles and cans all over the streets and sidewalks. The college needs to interact as they have a police force that allows underage drinking and public intoxication annd disturbing the peace.

I feel that these kids should be arrested for underage drinking and public intoxification and drinking in public ect. As a punishment to keep it off their record they should go around the city streets such as cedar and Highland ave and pick up the broken glass in front of their peers!

Leominster is really bad for this scenario; five guys standing around one guy working! They need to give them stick and pick details!

The DPW is non existing in Fitchburg! They worked the ice storm and complained!

And don't forget-if you have a college kid, and they're partying hard in the FSU neighborhood and they need to have a pee or poop, tell them to visit the candidate's home on Cedar Street. Tell them to pee on the house if they wish, or ring the bell for a poop and friendly discourse on the state of the city.

Party on, FSU!!!

Yeah Leominster has a crew of 4-6 DPW guys working together to get the job done by sundown. The Fitchburg DPW can't come close to the Leominster DPW crews. There to sneaky to stand around. They all hang out and hide together at coffee shops throughout the city. No matter how much you try to twist it Fitchburg DPW workers could care less about the city they work for.

Would John Fitch be turned away by the road full of water?? No! He would steal wood from his neighbors porch and build a raft so he could buy designer jeans for $7.00 at New York Bling.

We all just want to party is all. Yes, a few of us are charged with rape but we didn't know any better. The FSU police always had our back as they would chaperone us from one party to the next at 4am.

The liaison at FSU even stated to the Sentinel that there was no problems concerning partying students. We all like to drink and drive.

If the girl wasn't passed out then maybe she could of made it to the blue light for help but then again the FSU police have allowed such out of control partying as we thought it was allowed.

Where is Antonucci when we need him? Heck, he had enough power to have the student held on no bail due to him wearing a punk rock belt. Which is worse? Wearing a punk rock belt or gang raping a innocent female student?

Time to get the priorities straightened out at FSU. Partying or education??

Can the Sentinel give us an update of this gang rape case? Or did Antonucci already put in the hush hush?

In 5 yrs, we have seen students murdered in domestic abuse cases, houses burned down due to alcohol abuse, cars tipped, drinking and driving and now gang rape?? When is enough enough?

They gave all their corrupt abuse into jailing the innocent student for being different.

This school has FAILED in educating its students regarding the abuse of alcohol and drugs. "Come to FSU where you can learn to drink out of control". Don't worry as the FSU will chaperone students from party to party past 4 am.
