Hey Droppyball or America I see you change your screen name
Same IP address.
Before you say I can't get your IP address .. Just to let you know there are computer programs that let me track Ip Address and I know a lot about computers.....
I am a computer programmer. Sorry you cannot get my IP address from Topix, another nice bluff but very wrong.
I will give you some information because you obviously are not educated in computers.
There is no way short of a law enforcement request or court order to get an IP address from a message or a post. If you did somehow magically get the IP address (as others here claim you can do, yet without ever giving any info), without also getting a court order to the ISP that owns the IP address you would not be able to get anything more than a general location. If the person was using a proxy (a trivial task) then forget about even that.
You would have to hire an attorney and prove the comment or post is directed at you personally and that would have to be your full entire name in the post.
The post would have to be slanderous or life threatening at you, not anyone else or not a general posting.
You would have to obtain a Federal court order that a judge will grant and this will get access to the Topix servers. Judges that service this process see not 1, not 10, not 100 but over 1,000 requests a WEEK and each request has to be fully investigated for probable cause for a Federal court order to be granted.
The point what many of you are missing is the actual legal process.
Say you are successful in retaining a lawyer ( money spent ) and getting a Judge to order an ISP Record subpoena ( VERY unlikely ) and finally get Topix records..what do you think ANY court of law is going to do?
Even IF someone is convicted they'll never see a day in jail, if anything and at most it will be some fines and MAYBE some type of probation. I am sorry to burst your bubbles but there are very serious crimes out there occurring and the jails are
already packed past capacity as it is, no one is going to jail over anything posted on Topix.
Courts don't want to fool with topix comments cause they are so many that they would overwhelm the court system and you can trace to a general area but not a specific house or computer so you still could not prove it in court. Sorry.
Once you have the IP address, you have to then subpoena the information from the ISP to find out who's account was connected to it. That's the second barrier to it. If it's a dynamic IP, you're screwed, because most ISPs do not keep track of dynamic IP assignments for more than a few days, if at all.
Even if you make it over that hurdle, in the age of wi-fi connections virtually everyone has wi-fi on their router. This means plausible deniability and reasonable doubt that you will never overcome. Anyone could have connected to their wi-fi, even if it is protected. By this time in the process you will have amassed literally thousands upon thousands of dollars in legal fees in pursuit of a person who probably lives in a mobile home and makes 11,000 dollars a year on the dole - making them inactionable and not worth the money you already spent.
In short, unless you know the person you are targeting is quite wealthy and quite stupid, as well as using a direct connection to a router with no wi-fi, you are wasting your money and time.
So I am forwarding your post to Topix because you are now stating you hacked into their servers. Gotcha !
