I love all the comments. Thanx to the Sentinel for giving us this opportunity. When the board makes the site visits one of them already has businesses in there illeagally. So much for mixed use. Lori Gitto better watch out for the Italian Irish boy he is no business man. I vote for Kenny Ricker as long as it is a tappas restaraunt. That is something we don't have in Leominster. I just suggest everyone watch their belongings because one of these applicants is a jealous vindictive person.

Obviously you do not frequent On The Rocks because if you did you would realize it is a very nice clean establishment that has a great following, the owners are constantly doing fundraisers for the community, and they are respectful and caring to all the customers. I have never seen any issues as far as fights or even arguements and I consider myself a regular satisfied customer
LOL,lololololololol. Says a lot about who you are.

OTR is clearly the nicest bar in our area. They care about their customers and frequently host benefits to help local residents. They have extras like free appetizers on holidays, reunions and other occasions. The 2 owners are always there and the majority of patrons are decent hardworking people. It's a place to go where you know things won't get out of hand. Kudos to Ken Ricker for his business professionalism. Also, the corruption in the local committee is APPALLING (and apparent to everyone reading this)

Look -- there's a lot of mud being slung around in these comments, and while everyone is entitled to their "opinion" it should come down to basic facts, not a popularity contest. I too see some real issues with some of the propsed concepts (or those proposing them). Fact is, Ricker has been after this license 4 times. He's got a name, a menu, a plan, a decent location (parking, etc.) and the tried and true experience he brings from a "tougher" biz - a bar. The fact that he's been turned down that many times is just plain "fishy". My guess is someone on the board is getting paid to keep Ricker out of it. We DEFINITELY have enough asian-food-related restaurants around and even the other two propsed restaurants -- "pubs". Why wouldn't the board want to try a new concept such as a tapas menu -- something that has been heralded nationwide as "the best new experience in dining". It's simple really -- small, appetizer-like portions at affordable prices. Beats the heck out of overpriced small portions or overplated tasteless fare. I don't know enough about who the players are but sounds to me like Ricker's being black-balled and I think it merits some investigation or a new, non-biased party to hear the decision discussions.

I have an issue with people "using" someone else to appear for the license. Everyone but Ricker had someone elses name in for the license.
I agree withthe above person from Malboro. Why should Ricker be turned down 4 itmes? Especially this time-he has the plan, menu, and a business sense.
Frankly, the last thing Leominster needs is another Asian or Italian restaurant. It really doesn't need another bar either.

Agreed that Ken Ricker is a great person... but so is Lori Gitto. She is NOT her husband. She is simply a woman with an idea of a great new place to eat and enjoy some drinks... all the while making a living to support herself and her children. The city of Leominster would benefit from either person getting the license. The last thing that we need is another big chain restaurant. And also, hats off to Donna Baletta for trying to open another business in her town!! Successful or not.

I wish the people who are supposedly in the "KNOW" would actually print their real name. If you are going to sling your wild comments about someone from a rumor you heard from a cousin, then have the guts to print your name. I guarantee most of these posts wouldn't even be on this site. Every one of these applicants are worthy of a license to try to better their community and their own lives. So sit back and sling your mud behind closed doors; yeh what a great asset to the community you are.Sit home and read your "Enquirer".

The license commision in Leominster obviously does not want Ken Ricker to open anything in Leominster. They say they like his spot then they don't like his spot, then they say there is no parking. He has more parking in that strip mall then most all the locally owned places in the area. They dont like that end of town but they gave Tom Shea a license at that end of town 1 mile down the road. Then Tom gave the license back after over a year of holding it, Then they give it to Ralph Caisse for a place, no experience and he gives it back after over a year of holding it. Shame on you Mayor Mazzarella for pretending you do not see what is going on, Lanza abruptly left his seat after being reappointed, Why would a guy on a commission that long just resign after the mayor reappoints him, there has to be a reason????? I think the residents of Leominster have to start realizing this commission needs to be changed. We have to voice our opinions and the Mayor has to start from scratch and replace all 3 with new well qualified canidates that have to want whats best for the city and not there friends or were the money is.

I don't think inexperienced people should be opening restaurants in this market. And I don't think the town needs anymore right now. I don't know anything about Ricker, but sounds like he is deserving of the license but something prevents him from getting it.

what you have is 3 people that are not qualified to be on this commission. They need educated people that can make educated decisions and not be misguided by outside influences. People that know what the laws are and how to enforce them, Paul Leblanc and Jim Kelly sound like they are still trying to learn the rules, If they don't get it by now they are not going to get it. GET RID OF THEM

I hope part of the Monument Grill lady's "retooling" is a realization that she's not in Cambridge or Boston, and that she should stop trying to be (more of) a millionaire. Get off your high horse - if you're going to operate a "casual" restaurant, no entree should cost more than $15 / plate. Jerk.
You are the Jerk. The prices were not bad at all. Even the chains have comparable prices to the Blue Marlin. I went to a snack shack in Spencer that is not anythign special and their fried sefood platters were more expensive than her's She is not a millionaire either. Just a nice woman who is trying to give this community more of an option than pre-packaged, frozen food you get at the chains. All the food at the Blue Marlin is fresh and prepared to order. You obviously didn't eat there within the last 6 months- the menu has changed and is great. Sounds like you wouldn't know quality food if it smacked you in the face.

Again, the Mayor decides who is on the commission. In other communities, candidates are interviewed, and are approved based on their experience, and the Selectman/City Council has a vote in the matter.

One person alone does not have the power to appoint.

The process needs to be changed.

Dumb question. I've met Lori Gitto several times and she seemed like a decent person married to a greedy, greasy, goon, Gitto. I don't fault Lori for enjoying the fruits of her husband's crimes.

My dumb question is this. Are Gary Gitto and Charles N. Gitto so low scum of the earth that they would leave Lori penniless, their kids & grand kids penniless after stealing so many millions of dollors?

Charlie Gitto & Gary Gitto seem to have piles of cash in their stash to hire big law firms to keep their sorry butts out of Federal jail but they can't share their stash with their family? Doubtful.

My suspicion is the Gitto Goldmine has gone deep into hiding, like in Panama orBermuda or where Gary went fishing in central America, and Lori needs to explain why she can still pay her family's bills with no official money coming into her Gucci purse from the unofficial stash of stolen cash.

I bet Lori could open up a store selling ice cubes to Eskimos and still report well over six figures as official income, even with no Eskimo customers.

Be real. Crooks always have a plan for what to do when caught and the Gitto bandit boys are following a plan. Gary and Charlie N. are lying thieves but they are not total morons. However, Gary the Boy Wonder is closer to being a moron than Dandy, Dapper Don, Daddy.

Some towns put fluoride in their drinking water. I suspect Leominster puts greed and corruption in their drinking water. I could give so many for instances my fingers would hurt if I typed one third of them.

When we all wake up, call spades spades, clean house, bounce the bad actors, and start with honest people in power. With the slowing economy, not so many educated, civic minded, community conscious, "liberals" will move out here from Cambridge or Boston, and we'll all have a choice.

We'll keep the don't make waves mafioso status quo, or make the scum go, ya know, sis & bro.

Now that is a brilliant, constructive idea. Power often corrupts people (or is it corrupt people usually seek power?) and please always question the motives of those seeking power.

What's in it for them? A licensing meeting takes time away from the family, from bowling, from watching the game or whatever people usually do at night.

Why do they give up their nights controlling who gets what in Leominster?

Power? Money? Parking Decal for up close parking to City Hall? True community service?

Ask these questions and then ask why Deano keeps his sole power rather Deano himself seeking to change the licensing commission rules like Varn suggested above.

I'll vote for Varn!!!!
