WEST BOYLSTON — A correction officer was attacked by a weapon-wielding inmate yesterday morning at the Worcester County Jail and House of Correction.
The officer was being treated for puncture wounds to the head and the chest area, said Sheriff Lewis G. Evangelidis. He was rushed to UMass Memorial Medical Center — University Campus in Worcester after the attack, which occurred around 10:15 a.m.
A statement from the Sheriff’s Department said the wounds were not life-threatening. A second officer, who rushed to the aid of his colleague, was taken to a hospital for minor injuries.
“The weapon, a small piece of metal fence, was recovered shortly after the scene was secured,” the statement said.
Officials did not release the identities of the officers or the inmate.
“The inmate also required medical treatment for non-life threatening, self-inflicted puncture wounds,” the statement said.“This inmate was a new arrival pretrial inmate, but had been assigned to a maximum security housing unit due to his criminal history.”
“It is an unfortunate reality that correction officers work in a dangerous environment, but we strive each day to prevent incidents like this from occurring,” Sheriff Evangelidis said.“Our staff did a tremendous job responding to this incident and we are grateful that at this time these injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.”
Correction officers are limiting movement of inmates until the investigation is complete, the statement said.
The attack prompted the head of the correction officer’s union to say a reduction in security because of the sheriff’s staffing decisions has jeopardized the safety of officers.
“We’ve actually been raising concerns probably for the past nine to 12 months,” said Officer Warren Lohnes Jr., president of Local 550 of New England Police Benevolent Association, which represents the correction officers at the jail.
He said the union has seen troubling incidents at the jail on the rise, and said yesterday’s attack was a “worst-case scenario for us.”
Officer Lohnes said that when the sheriff is looking to make cuts, the last place he should look is in any area that has the potential to impact staff and visitor safety and security.
“I’m hearing concern from my members that the sheriff, on a regular basis, puts politics ahead of safety and security,” he said.
Chief Deputy Sheriff David H. Tuttle last night called Officer Lohnes’ comments reprehensible, particularly at a time when the jail’s emergency plan was still activated and an active investigation was going on.
“Private Lohnes’ first reaction is to call the newspaper and provide misinformation in an attempt to grab headlines on an investigation while it’s ongoing,” Chief Deputy Tuttle said.
He said that since the sheriff has taken office, the jail has graduated 70 new recruits, with another academy coming. The sheriff has maintained staffing in housing units, and Chief Deputy Tuttle said “it’s concerning that the president of the union isn’t aware of this basic information.”
He said the focus should be on the safety of the officers involved

There is a massive atmosphere of disrespect at the Worcester house. I cannot see it getting anymore civil as detainees are treated like dogs. They are talked down to and miss treated constantly.
If you are unhealthy in Worcester house your life is in immediate danger. It takes WELL OVER TWO WEEKS of constant requesting to see a mental health worker. And before you state lies; no I wasn't requesting assistance but I seen guys begging to be seen.
This level of service will only bring incidents. The place is a time bomb. The detainees support themselves and council each other in order to keep things stable.
The conditions at the Worcester house are inhumane! The visiting process for detainees is horrid and unconstitutional as they seriously DISCOURAGE visitors from coming to the Worcester house. It can take beyond two weeks to be able to make any contact with the outside world due DIRECTLY to Worcester houses policies that no other jail maintains!
They make money off the visitors for everything as they have to even pay a fee to leave funds for detainees. Now, remember detainees should be afforded all the rights as a free person as they are innocent till proven guilty. The inadequate health care is criminal!!
I repeat, THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IS CRIMINAL!!! The ACLU has shown an interest in investigating this FACT. The State needs to step to the plate and investigate these FACTS for themselves. Again I will produce proof and will testify at length.

And the anger just keeps rolling off your keyboard. Lynch, your testimony would be USELESS! You've been deemed NOT CREDIBLE and are a PROVEN BOLD FACED LIAR.
"I had become a facilatator for alternatives to violence which I continue to preach and practice!"
"too bad the guy didnt crawl back to his car if he had a gun and put a few in the foreheads of those thug cops!!
When r u going to wake up and smell the coffee? The government is a corrupt mob! They run gambling enterprises and they get a dollar from every case of beer sold!
Then u have the police "who give SERVICE"; someone please explain this "service thing to me? 8 stateys beating one guy? Let me ask you cop lover, if u were any further up their shute you wouldnt have to explain to me why you had poop on the top of your sneaker! If 8 guys beat one guy, what type of time would he get? If you got caught beating a guy with a club while he was handcuffed to a pole, what type of time would your lovers give you?
These cops broke the law! They assaulted this guy! You are wrong, their are many witnesses to this scene!
Get a clue, cops are on the take! Where have u been?? u need to go out more often. Nobody trust cops! You would have more respect if you asked a gangster for assistance than a modern day cop!"

Let me give you a reality check Stamos. The more and more that this conduct is allowed and seen by the general public the further the violence will be.The less the citizens will cooperate with authorities.
You really feel that brute force and brutality will gain the police respect and will make them safer? Let me ask you; what happened when they did not hold the officers accountable in the Rodney King case?
While bigger States such as California and New York have changed their ways into a mutual respect model, Fitchburg just begins this brutal force theory of law enforcement?
You really are blind to reality?

Do you think that there are still criminal officers on the FPD? You are Ok with this fact? What happens as they move up the chain of command?
#8 Jul 12, 2012
What is up with the correctional officers whom live or party in Fitchburg? Some have been arrested by State Troopers and one was actually shot and killed for bradishing a weapon at a local bar room.

I have two theories for you to ponder.
1. It must be very stressfull being surrounded by violent criminals all day.
2.Maybe being with criminals all the time the mentality effects you. Take Gomez for example, how many times has he got in trouble since he hooked up with you?
#10 Jul 12, 2012
I agree that their job is stressful. I am talking about a seperate element within the system. The "ROGUE" force and the administration that puts these guys in harms way through bad policy.
I have many friends that are prison guards.
#11 Jul 12, 2012
I'm sure you do know all of the prison guards. You're always getting locked up.
#12 Jul 13, 2012
Yes, we all know that prison guards DO hang around with cops. And, I am sure that some prison guards do even spend FULL DAYS hanging around with their cop buddies. But, to come right out and blame the wrondoing of a prison guard on the fact that some cops are nothing more then violent criminals, and that is what is causing some of our prison guards to pop their corks in barrooms, is just plain wrong.
#13 Jul 13, 2012
Yeah we get it. You think the cops are bad and the criminals they arrest have done nothing wrong.

Leominster, it is innocent till proven guilty. No one in America is sentenced to be beaten nor mentally tortured. This is what goes on at the Worcester house. If you are not crazy going in you will be coming out of Worcester House. There are Human rights violations taking place at the Worcester House.
#15 Jul 14, 2012
really? and just how do you define "friends"? and how many of them think of you as a friend? I bet you can't count them on one finger.
#16 Jul 15, 2012
Well I suppose you are living proof of that. Go in crazy, come out more crazy. Maybe you should see a doctor?
#17 Jul 15, 2012
Here is how it works. If you don't commit crimes you don't go to jail. Do you think that jail time should be like going on a luxury cruise ship and eating shrimp cocktails? It doesn't work that way.
#18 Jul 15, 2012
once you do your time then that is it! You seem to believe that you can harrass people who have done time until they react, then you point a finger, see, see??
You are nothing but a fool! You are just a fresh mouth PUNK! Let me ask, did you run for office in Leominster? You are an idiot!
You feel brave and comfortable opening your mouth to people annonymously online. COWARD!

Thanks for the compliments. Have you ever stopped and thought the reason you are gay is because women want nothing to do with you?

SCREW worcecster HOC! the prick probably deserved it! and as for Lynch for Governor's comments about their visiting policies, I can't even go visit because of a Juvenile charge from over 10 years ago, I am barred from the facility. I contacted the special services unit as they asked me to and did exactly what "Julie in Special Services" asked me to do. and i got not so much as a phone call from her. the place is a joke! I am now waiting for my bf to go upstate or home until i can see him again. He isn't even sentenced yet and he's being treated like a convict
