SLIDESHOW: Hazmat team at Worcester Police station
WORCESTER A white powder brought into the police station today by a man who found it on the windshield of his car along with a threatening note will be tested by state officials to determine what it is.
The powder prompted the closing of the police station lobby for about 40 minutes today while a state hazardous materials team responded.
A 24-year-old city man left a Madison Street address and found an envelope on his Honda Accord's windshield. He opened it and white powder got on him and the inside of his car, according to police and fire officials. The man drove to the police station and brought the envelope to the Services Division window about 3:45 p.m.
Officer Matthew Tivnan took the envelope and the powder got on him as well. The officer had no idea what the man was handing to him, according to officials.
The letter inside the envelope was characterized as threatening by District Fire Chief Frank D. DiLiddo III.
When the police officer accepted the envelope, the substance spilled on him and onto the floor, and the Fire Department and state hazmat team were called, the district chief said.
The police station lobby was evacuated and closed. It was reopened at 4:20 p.m., after the affected areas were cleaned with bleach and the officer and the man who brought in the envelope were decontaminated and isolated, District Chief DiLiddo said. Early this evening, officials said they were prepared to release both the officer and the man.
We have to take this as a serious and possible threat, District Chief DiLiddo said. Police detectives are investigating.
The parking lot on the Belmont Street side of the police station remained closed until the hazmat team arrived to analyze the substance. The letter was sealed in a plastic bag and placed in the parking lot.
The man's Silver Honda Accord was parked in the parking lot near Summer Street and closed off.
Worcester firefighters who are also members of the state hazmat team conducted some tests on the bag, but did not open it since it was already sealed. Field tests on the material could not be conducted because officials could not get enough of a sample, District Chief DiLiddo said.
The bag was taken to the state Department of Public Health laboratory in Jamaica Plain, where it will be tested, the district chief said. He said results could come back as early as tomorrow.
We're not ruling out anything at this time, he said.
If the powder turns out to be a harmful material, people will be notified and the proper procedure will be followed, he said.

I wonder is this letter was on small yellow paper? Someone is going to get in a lot of trouble as this is a federal crime!
I first recieved a letter containing white powder in 2002. The letter had a return address of Worcester,Ma. I ended up getting extremly ill and hospitalized in Clinton hospital. The only antibiotic that worked was Cipro.
Now just over a week ago I recieved a letter with the exact return address from the 2002 letter.
The letter that I just recieved was sent through the mail. This is a federal offense using the US postal service in this fashion.
I know that the person who sent this letter to me is directly involved in the fabricated case against me as I was in dispute with a certain officers family in 2002.
You are not as slick as you think, we are on to you! You will go to jail for this type of harrassment!

I have to wonder if an envelope containing white powder was found outside a police station if 1) it actually contained drugs; as in cocaine and 2) If a cop may have accidently left it there after he lifted it straight out of a police evidence room....
Perhaps a creative lawman had pilferred the powder (again, cocaine) and he was going to either use it himself; or give it to a friend; or save it to plant on someone he did not like; or use it for barter with a prostitute.
Let's not jump to conclussions here; it may be nothing more than a case of an absent minded blueboy......

It was crazy enough, but you completely missed the point.

You just love to look for trouble, don't you? It's always a cop or family of a cop. Always fabricated charges, when are you ever going to take responsability for your screw up's? always the cops fault. Your are typical criminal, it's always the cops fault, and when you lose your next case, the lawyers fault. What a loser. One other thing, when anyone or organization recieved an envelop with white powder it was usually all over the news, funny you story doesn't ring a bell. I bet you are making this all up, looking for attention as usual. Find the story and post it for all to see, you manage to find other stories about cops. Prove me wrong, I doubt you can.

Lynch, you were involved in another dispute with another officers family in 2002? Lynch! Do you not see the pattern here?

the biggest delusion is using this forum as a pulpit thinking 1)"all" will see and 2) any will believe or be sympathetic

That's a tough one. Who's to say you didn't put baby powder in an envelope, drive to Worcester and drop it in a box to be mailed to you in Fitchburg? You would think this would have been on the news if you recieved a letter like this. Anyway's glad to hear you're feeling better.

I'd enjoy getting an update of what local and state police found in their investigations. Also what homeland security and the F.B.I. found out. This is a serious and scary situation.

If this letter went through the post office who knows how many others were exposed? There could be alot of sick people from this. Thanks for the heads up. I hope homeland security has done something about this.
