The horror!!! Old plans for better ones, the horror!!!!!!

"We’ve known for several years that once the Affordable Care Act is implemented, substandard insurance plans would be replaced with better, stronger coverage. Nevertheless, as lots of folks learn that their old plans are being replaced, this has led to a variety of overheated reports featuring shocked consumers.(That insurers routinely dropped Americans’ coverage under the old system is often overlooked.)

Leading much of the coverage is a woman named Dianne Barrette, a 56-year-old resident of Winter Haven, Fla., who’s made a flurry of television appearances after Blue Cross/Blue Shield informed her that her old plan is being replaced with a new one, and her new coverage will be more expensive.“What I have right now is what I’m happy with, and I just want to know why I can’t keep what I have,” she said on CBS.“Why do I have to be forced into something else?”

To his credit, the Washington Post’s Erik Wemple took a closer look at the anecdotal evidence.

More coverage may provide a deeper understanding of the ins and outs of Barrette’s situation: Her current health insurance plan, she says, doesn’t cover “extended hospital stays; it’s not designed for that,” says Barrette. Well, does it cover any hospitalization?“Outpatient only,” responds Barrette. Nor does it cover ambulance service and some prenatal care. On the other hand, says Barrette, it does cover “most of my generic drugs that I need” and there’s a $50 co-pay for doctors’ appointments.“It’s all I could afford right now,” says Barrette.

In sum, it’s a pray-that-you-don’t-really-get -sick “plan.”

If this woman had a serious ailment and was forced to stay in the hospital for a while, her old plan would have likely destroyed her financial life permanently, leaving her bankrupt. Now, thanks to “Obamacare,” in the event of a disaster, she’ll be protected with coverage her insurer can’t take away – with no annual or lifetime caps.

In other words, the new horror story for critics of the health care law features a middle-aged woman trading a bad plan for a good plan, and health care insecurity for health care security.

What’s more, while much of the coverage of Barrette’s situation has focused on the higher monthly cost of her new, better insurance plan, there’s another detail that’s been overlooked by some: she’ll be eligible for subsidies under the Affordable Care Act. The cost of the coverage isn’t what she’ll actually have to pay out of her own pocket.

Obama didn't say "we will give you a better plan", he said "if you like your plan, you can keep it".
So your attempt at spin to kiss Obama's butt is just more spin. I like my plan and I didn't ask Obama to change it...it's none of his damn business.

Well sure fine, more than 85% of people will be keeping their plans. The law effects a fraction of 8% of the population.

If you think this deserves Impeachment, you need your head examined.

There are certain lies out there that have cost more than 4000 troop deaths and many many more wounded warriors of which you just simply balk at and say things like "blame bush" and then THOSE lies are supposed to be forgotten cause you say that?

Which caused more harm???????

And now why don't you head over to your Impeach Obama thread and address your very own lies where you claim now that NSA spying is worth Impeachment in October but somehow, you were not thinking that in June of this year!!!!

So let’s analyze this. We now have overwhelming evidence that you won’t be able to keep your doctor. We also have evidence that shows insurance companies are dropping individuals from their plans at an alarming rate. We have no idea what reimbursements are going to be for health care facilities, and the price of insurance premiums is skyrocketing

You miss the point...people that were told they wouldn't be impacted because they could keep what they had, are now being told to go shopping for new insurance.

My Mom is a perfect example of this...she is 76 years old and had a plan through Blue Cross/Blue Shield that took care of everything for her...bills from service providers and medications would go straight to BS/BS and they would pay them.

She was informed by the company that Dad worked for that they would be cancelling the plan she had and providing a HRA (Health Reimbursement Account) with a fixed sum that she could use to go buy insurance and handle medical expenses.

She was forced to go find new insurance, which involved finding an insurance plan for medical, an insurance plan for prescriptions...now she has the distinct pleasure of getting a premium bill for each plan, paying the bill from her own money and then submitting the bills for reimbursement EVERY MONTH. She also will have to pay any bills for prescriptions amd medical care not billed directly to the medical care probider and submit for reimbursement to the HRA.

So you can claim victory later on for the people without coverage at the expense of others that had coverage and are now having to deal with that kind of bullshit...thats fair. It amazes me that you Democrats always think its fair to fuck up the lives of people doing OK so you can claim some kind of weird scial victory on behalf of others.

"
University of Michigan professor and senior Brookings fellow Justin Wolfers on Thursday created a chart depicting the "winners and losers" under the Affordable Care Act, sourced to a Ryan Lizza article that used estimates from M.I.T. economist Jon Gruber, a former adviser to Mitt Romney.

The chart portrays the degree to which Republicans and critics of Obamacare have amplified the media's coverage around the relatively small percentage of Americans who have received cancellation notices for stripped-down individual market plans that failed to meet the benefit requirements of the ACA.

Gruber, called the architect of Romney's successful health care plan in Massachusetts, argues that of the six percent of Americans who buy their own health care on the individual market, three percent would have negligible change to their policies. He also addresses President Obama's memorable but over-simplified promise, that if you like your plan, you would be able to keep it. From Lizza's writeup:

“We’ve decided as a society that we don’t want people to have insurance plans that expose them to more than six thousand dollars in out-of-pocket expenses,” Gruber said. Obama obviously should have known that his blanket statement about “keeping what you have” could not apply to this class of policyholders.

Gruber summarized his stats: ninety-seven per cent of Americans are either left alone or are clear winners, while three per cent are arguably losers.“We have to as a society be able to accept that,” he said.“Don’t get me wrong, that’s a shame, but no law in the history of America makes everyone better off.”
