Department of Public Works officials are urging residents to be patient with efforts being taken to clear snow in city streets after the recent storms, but also to report any related problems they may be having.

The winter is the only time the DPW gets overtime. This is nothing new. Good for them.
It's the private contractors that are being paid $80 per hour that need to be reviewed. They don't even drop their plows onto the street so they won't have to replace the plow after a season thus leaving the streets with snow moguls.
It's all in the budget. When we had the big ice storm a couple years ago they didn't have enough sand. Now they have too much. As a rule every dollar you give to the Government they find a way to spend 125% of it and then say they need to raise taxes again.

Think about it. We spend trillions of dollars on new tanks, aircraft carriers and jets every year and we're not really at war with anyone so they make wars up in Africa.

I am all for the DPW getting their share of overtime. It's the private contractors that need NOT to lighten up and drop their plows onto the streets to get the job done properly.

The snow removal account is suppose to be depleted because that is the way it is utilized. If there is any money in the account left over after the season then it cannot be transferred. This account is a non-transferrable account.

So the city will only deposit enough funds into the account to cover 1 or 2 storms. Don't be surprised when the newspaper reports that the snow removal account is empty, this is normal for every winter.

The State keeps tabs on these accounts so cities cannot hide money there and request more State aid to cover other department budgets.
The State does not want to see a request for more State aid for a city and find money in their snow removal account. the State sees that money could have balanced the budget and the request for more aid would not be needed.

Even the purchasing and turning on streetlights is not a simple task. The Mayor has to negotiate with the Unitil executives and they have to notify the stockholders (who live in Hawaii and have never seen Fitchburg)about the proposition. The stockholders will vote in their next board meeting and this can take as long as 30,60, 90 or even 120 days or more.

What the Mayor should have is a question and answer night in one of the school's auditoriums so interested residents can learn more on how and why the city operates. It will be better than learning about city issues in the local newspaper and leaving people wondering and coming to their own conclusions about city issues.

I couldn't agree with you more Wicked. Unortunately the way large utility companies and Lawyers set things up you have to agree to a multi year deal or pay a penalty.

For the simple people to try and understand think of it as getting Fios. They tell you something like $75 for the first two months then you are responsible to pay a contract at $150 a month for two years. Wong tries her best to avoid these penalty fees and bullshit that goes with it.

I know what you mean about all those hidden fees these days. Let's use the cops as an example:

The FPD loves to go on record saying that the annual salary for a lawman is in the $40k to 60k range. Yet, when you find out what are blueboys are actually making; it is way more than the paultry 40k to 60k. Why? Because of all the extras that this bunch makes. Stipends for knowing how to use a gun and for driving safely are great examples. Ditto for taking a course or attending a seminar. Needless to say; with the 56 paid days off for vacation/sick time/personal time they have plenty of extra time to work their never ending paid details. So, very quickly their pay is more in the $80k to 100k range and even higher. But, whenevr the subjct of annual pay comes up; they will quote the base pay with no stipends. The pay that really few of them are actually earning.

Again, it's a great example of being told one thing is happening when in actuallity something completely different is happening.

If you are not earning $80K a year then maybe it is time for a career change.

I guess the only qustion to ask is what do you make a year? Do you try to find work on the side with your days off to add to your income?

OK, by golly, you figured me out; didn't you? Yes, I have to admit that I have been known to pick up extra money by working some side jobs when taking time off from my real job. Sometimes I am called upon to perform brain surgery in a few of the local hospitals. I started dabbling in the field years ago and I quickly mastered it. Other times I am called upon to be a Rocket Scientist. Once I mastered the whole brain surgery thing I needed something else challenging to play around with. And, the field of Rocket Science seemed like another thing that I could quickly master....

Both this sidelines add to my annual income. Of course, it is not as glorious as working a paid police detail; chatting with City Workers/Electric Company Workers/Cable Company Workers while you ignore the passing traffic. And, catching up on your cell phone calls and text messages as you earn time and a half pay with a 4 hour minimum for doing virtually nothing; but by golly Its a living for me.....

Just because you sit on your couch stuffing your face with cheese doodles while you watch episodes of House or maybe Star Wars for the 100th time it doesn't make you an expert.

Your seathing jealousy of police working details is sad. That's the law put in place by the Govt. you elected. Other states don't have mandatory police details they hire contractors.

This is typical Fitchburg and the low class mentality and what makes it the crap hole it is. People need to get out and better themselves by either going back to school, starting a business or finding a higher earning occupation.

Instead of encouraging your local neighbors to better themselves posters like this rather degrade the successful workers. If you are not satisfied with your salary then do something about it instead of complaining about other people and how much they earn.

Again, this is a great example of Fitchburg's low class mentality that you will not find anywhere else. It is too bad and it is so sad.

Actually, I honed my knowledge and my expertise on all things related to lawmen by watching all the Smokey and the Bandit movies as well as the Dukes of Hazzard TV show. Both of these shows seem to depict the police in an accurate, yet down to earth fashion.

Of course, neither Beaufford T Justice nor Bose Hog were ever shown working a paid police detail; but my guess is that they were in fact doing it to fatten their wallets.

I think that even in the States that simply use a plain old flag man or a plain old flag woman; the police should have the right of first refusal for these traffic details. Sure, flag men and flag women actually pay attention to the passing traffic and they do perform a much needed function by waving flags around; but just the same I think that if a cop wants to sit on his duff in a cruiser on the side of the road dozing off and text messaging friends and family members, or if a cop wants to chit chat with the people who are actually working at these sites, as this same cop totally ignores the passing vehicles; he should have every right to do so. After all; its a great way to fatten your wallet while actually adding no value whatsover to the situation at hand; and I strongly feel that all cops nationwide should be able to cash in on the free money, as we have allowed here in Massatucky.

The problem is to many residents are addicted to OPM...(Other Peoples Money). I laugh at people like 'you know who'. They complain about police not doing enough to earn their pay while the only time they get off the couch is to check the mailbox for a welfare check.

We all know motorist don't respect flagmen as they do cops. I have seen motorists speeding past a road crew with a flagman and that would not happen when a cop is on the detail.

Also people do not understand that a cop on a road detail is there to be seen and that is for the safety of the road crew. All motorists are responsible for safely navigating thru road construction sites. The police are not there to constantly direct traffic. They are there soley for the safety of the workers and will alter, stop or redirect traffic when needed for the road crew.

Again people want to believe one thing when the situation has a totally different concept. Another Fitchburg mentality that people have here is they assume and feel they know how other occupations operate.

You have got me all wrong. I, in fact, have much more respect for a flag man or a flag woman than I do for a cop. A flag person is out on the site actually working. A cop at a detail, on the other hand, is typically doing either nothing whatsoever or damn near nothing. They think that simply being there is enough. So, more often than not they are collecting their detail pay for simply being there......

Towing companies are very reputable, huh? You have a nerve to label Fitchburg residents as low class. So what company do you own so we can examine your practices, huh?

many towing companies run a strong arm business on the side, is your business into this sort of behavior? So, you consider yourself as a wage earner/upper class why? Because you pull up with your greasy face, beer belly and put a hook on a car and press the up button. Am I labeling you wrongfully? Or are you part of the politically connected? In other words do you pay the city the grease money in order to get all the fpd tows so you can press the up button and talk badly about the cars owner to the police?

So, the more you pay the bigger the trucks you purchase? It is common for tow truck drivers to be friends with the police due to being around them during a tow job and then to enjoy threatening people on the side, drinking in the bar often and snorting cocaine. Is this a label of you?

The ONLY LOW CLASS MENTALITY in Fitchburg comes directly from your heroes the "network"!

You own a towing company? Good for you! What was your nickname? The wrench?

Your job has you socializing with lawmen, this doesn't make you legal!

What do two state police officers state about you after you pull away from towing a car for your masters? Many times they say, "what a slob","jeez, do you think he could use a shower?", "do you think he married his cousin?","that beer belly is worked for, huh","another imigrant from tennesee" and "he must of went to graduate school in order to know how to press that up button like he does!".

So, what are other things stated about tow truck drivers? Many believe that 95% of tow truck drivers do not have even a GED. Let me ask what the "upper class' within Fitchburg think about you? Many times they state, "hey, the world needs ditch diggers"!

It is comical listening to someone like you. You received a loan opportunity and now you believe this makes you worthy to criticize others?

Romney supporters still label you as part of the "lower class of the bottom 47%"; LMAO.

Let me ask, do you repair cars also? LOL

What you are stating is a LIE! People slow down for flag men all the time and more so than officers and this is a FACT!

I do not take any sides on who should be the ones conducting traffic but at least be honest!

Often a motorists cannot see an officer due to his dark uniform as a flagmen usually have an orange shirt with a yellow vest and a big Orange fluorescent flag. This is FACT!

We all understand that you are the butt of the officers jokes as you chuckle along with their jokes even when they are not funny. Even the officers themselves know that you are a kiss ass!

You ONLY socialize with police because you are the tow guy on site! You are obvious a self righteous person who believes that everyone should walk the same!

Who do you think you are to label the citizens of Fitchburg? If you had any guts AT ALL you would call it as it is! So, tell me about the "Good ole boy network?"

Do you sell marijuana? Do you overcharged customers such as elderly?? You have watched the report that states 80% of mechanics and body repair are scammers and cheats, right? Are you one of these? If not what do you think about these people?
