FITCHBURG -- Officer Scott Gabriel probably didn't expect to save the life of an armed burglary suspect early Sunday morning.

According to Capt. Paul Bozicas, police responded to a report of an armed burglary at a Birch Street home around 3 a.m. Sunday. The two suspects had taken off running toward Water Street, and were located on the Fifth Street Bridge by Gabriel and Officer Christopher Cordio.

When the suspects saw police, they ran toward Summer Street, Bozicas said, but Cordio drove ahead and blocked the way with his cruiser. As the two suspects turned around, trying to run back to Water Street, Gabriel blocked their way in that direction, he said.

The suspects then tossed their backpacks, filled with loot from the home, over the side of the bridge, Bozicas said. Cordio chased and apprehended the first suspect, identified as Luis J. Acevedo, 20, of 101 Harrison Ave.

But the second suspect, identified as Jeremy Colon, 19, of no known address, had more drastic plans in mind. Colon jumped over the side of the bridge in an attempt to escape Gabriel, Bozicas said. He said Gabriel rushed over, looked over the side and found Colon clinging to one of the support beams, his feet dangling over the more than 100-foot drop to the snow-covered ground below.

As Gabriel attempted to lift Colon back to safety, Colon struggled with him the entire way, Bozicas said, resisting his efforts. Gabriel was able to grab hold of Colon's clothing and pulled him back onto the bridge, while Colon continued to struggle until he was placed in handcuffs.

"It's just an outstanding bit of police work by both officers, especially Officer Gabriel," Bozicas said. "If you save a life, even if it's a suspect's life, you've done your job."

Gabriel and Cordio, who work the 11 p.m.-to-7 a.m. shift, were not available for comment before press time.

Acevedo and Colon were arraigned in Fitchburg District Court Monday on charges of armed burglary, receiving stolen property over $250, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Both were ordered held without bail pending the result of dangerousness hearings scheduled for Jan. 6.

Bozicas said police also hope to add home-invasion charges for both men, as the residents -- four adults and a toddler -- were home at the time of the burglary and were traumatized by the incident. A fifth adult had returned home during the burglary, causing the suspects to flee.

According to court documents, both men were masked when they entered the property through a first-floor window and carried a .177-caliber BB gun with them. They entered the room of the 3-year-old child, waking him and causing him to hide under his covers in fear.

The backpacks, recovered below the bridge, were found to contain a plethora of items from the home, including a new laptop computer, wallets, purses, several pairs of Michael Jordan sneakers and assorted jewelry, among other items.

Acevedo and Colon are no strangers to the court system, both having criminal histories.

In June, Acevedo was charged with five counts of larceny under $250 for allegedly stealing various items from Kmart while working with a cleaning company contracted to clean the store. He was ordered to pay restitution of $77.74 and given a year of probation.

In September, Acevedo was charged with receiving stolen property over $250, possession of a Class A drug and resisting arrest when he was allegedly found in possession of a moped he could not prove ownership of, as well as four individual baggies of heroin. All but the drug charge were dismissed in court, and Acevedo received a year of probation and was ordered to undergo drug evaluation and aftercare.

In April, Colon allegedly stole two BMX bikes valued at $1,000 each from Parkhill Park and was charged with larceny from a person. He was given nine months probation and ordered to pay $287.50 in restitution due to his inability to pay the full amount.

In June, Colon was charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, driving an unregistered motor vehicle and a number plate violation to conceal ID for allegedly stealing a Toyota Corolla. He was given nine months of probation and ordered to pay $200 restitution.

It's simply amazing how many times these pukes were allowed to get off with such easy punishment. Gabriel would have done more justice by kicking the puke off the bridge.

Home invasions in Fitchburg? Well it is a new year! Chief Demoura and Antonucci state that Fitcburg is low in crime. The officers themselves have posted a billboard which still stands in the new year that Fitchburg is high in crime.

Maybe in 2014 we will begin to receive the truth! Maybe identifications will be revealed on Topix??? We could have appearances by Ken B., Jeffrey W., Lydia G ????

Only time will tell huh Stamy?

Well Demoura has resigned, I mean retired. Hammel has resigned, I mean retired. No word yet on the Lunenburg officer that was fired and why?

Who will resign in 2014 ???? I bet we will see some FPD and FFD retires. Is this the year that Antonucci says by by to Fitchburg? We can only hope!

This is why I couldn't be a cop. If it were me I would go back to my car to warm up and wait till he either drops or climbs up and then arrest him AGAIN! What's the point? He will get another probation and be out stealing things again.

If I was the cop I would have said 'Hey Geronimo that's a long drop go ahead and take your chances.'. Job done. Walk down under the bridge and call EMTs.

Please don't give me that crap that they have to steal from innocent people to support their drug habit.

C'mon Lynch, you know these punks were set up by the FPD to make themselves look like hero's. What idiot racist cop would save some Latino criminal from doing a swan dive off the 5th street bridge? You've got to be kidding me, these cops drove those little punks to the bridge then threatened to toss them unless they gave up the goods. You know damn well this was all a set up Lynch to make them look good. I'll bet those punks will lawyer up with public defenders and demand lie detector test for both cops. This case could be that one that brakes the good ole boy network and brings in that FBI takeover you've been working on for the last 4 years. Just think Lynch, you'll finally be able to call an ambulance again for your family instead of making them drive to Worcester or Boston on their own.

Stamy, You are wrong again. The two FPD officers dis well concerning their job as I can only imagine this familys/victims fear and the violation that they experienced. As for pulling the suspect to safety, this was the decent human being in that officer that he portrayed.

So, you are wrong Stamy, I feel that these two officers did great work. Stamy any problems within the FPD are towards the top. When you have a poor manager or managers then you have a force that is dysfunctional.

And let me tell you Stamos, the thing that pushed me into accepting the DA offered solution is the fact that I didn't want to see Cordio fired. I feel that others should be fired in order to protect public safety. The others filed false reports which is a travesty for society as a whole.

We will have a new Chief, I hope that the right Chief is chosen, if not then it is going to get much worse within Fitchburg concerning a very inept, un professional and corrupt FPD.

So let me get this right Lynch, you're saying you agreed to the terms of an agreement with probation because you didn't want to see a particular cop get fired, so that begs the question Lynch, why would that cop even have been fired had you not agreed to your terms of probation?

Stamos, he is the officer who answered the 911 call, he was the one on tape telling me that he was sending units and he was the one who knew that I would be waiting for their arrival.

He is the one who the attacker admitted to under oath or calling his cell phone, the bar phone and receiving calls back from the bar after I had called 911.

The FBI stated that if he did this then it is absolutely corruption. It is clean cut as he put my life in danger as both doors came busting open and whack job stated "you, you fucking POS,......."

And there are others who would have been fired as well. I told my god mother that I didn't want to see anyone to lose their job and she questioned ,"what?" And she is the worlds biggest liberal/one who cares about everyone no matter what.

Lynch, if the FBI determined this officers action were inappropriate or corrupt then he would have been suspended immediately pending the outcome of an investigation. What part of YOU being a possible threat to that establishment and it patrons do YOU not understand Lynch? Calling 911 did not remove you from being a threat Lynch, it's just more proof of your obsession with the place. Many people call 911 when committing crimes. You've been on here harassing and stalking that place for several years calling it a pedophile cop mobster hangout after spending 8 years in prison for your own involvement in the murder of someone you refer to as mobster. Have you not? You threatened to take the matter into your own hands and even went so far as to wish violence and harm against the establishment and its patrons, did you not? You even admitted after the incident that you spoke to the Chief of Police just two days prior and were well aware that your parking complaints were being addressed yet your anger and obsession with the place brought you back there just two days later. Three weeks earlier you were on here harassing who you thought was the mother/sister of the family owned business. That cop would have been negligent in his duty had he not warned the bartender and his/her patrons of your presence outside and possible threat. http://www.topix.com/forum/law/TJFRDQVAG31HRE...

An asset? Are you stoned? What asset? Laws are being broken constantly and the fire department vehicles are being impeeded! The ffd will not complain because some are patrons and friends of patrons and owners! But if it was bumbles or Venues right there?? There would never be a car parked in the fire lane.
The Chief is now part of this mess as he is allowing it to happen! How can the Chief and Mcnamarra state to the city council that they are going to issue more tickets and up the fines in order to collect monies for OT; the chief has set up a revolving account for this purpose! People seem to read only what they want to know.
Then in todays paper they talk about ticketing college kids on Lincoln street because a few members of the clique live there and they don't want to see the cars . Otherwise they ALL have massive 6 car driveways. These are the people complaining!
Then both Mcnamarra and the Chief drive by JRs after I send them pictures. They drive by violators that are hampering the fire engines. Don't take my word nor the firefighters as they are friends of JRs. I sat and watched engines come to a complete stop in an emergency and squeek by within inches of the violators bumpers. Now when cars are not parked there they swing out fast and go to the emergency!
ive me a ticket book and I'll ticket them and go to court. I'll take pictures and ticket them. These violators should be towed without moving, this is a tow zone!
Chief Demoura has been notified dozens of times and refruses to address the problem. MOVE THE F IN CARS OR I WILL! i AM SO f IN TIRED OF THE TOTAL INCOMPETENCE OF THE fpd ADMINISTRATION! The mayor has done NOTHIN either!

What is wrong with you dude? And you are a cop? You must be the class act down at JRs! Again tonight, parked in the fire lane! While two marked cruisers are parked next door!
I swear this FPD is a class act itself! Imagine on a Staurday night we have two FPD cruisers standing by JRs as their fellow cops park in the fire lane. This is their daily routine as they are just daring now!
It would be nice to see someone throw a molly top at the car in the fire lane but then they would probably like that as the have big insurance on those cars! Maybe one of the cruisers will smash into it!
Now they will burn out there tires and the pavement in front of the fire station tonight at closing, drunk as boot owls!
Well Chief, you have a class act group of officers displaying themselves as rogue, renegade and rude display of who they are in life for real!
Oh, I pray that a fire engine smashes the car into the front of JRs! I will toast a drink out front of JRs tomorrow if they smash this car into JRs!
Can you imagine, two marked cruisers again displaying their allegiance to the rogue clique! Fitchburg has no chance as long as these bumbling idiots are running the show! They are probably drinking in the cruisers again!
Chief are you ever going to do anything with this group? Or do they run the show? Drinking and driving is supported by FPD members should be the new bumber sticker issued by JRs management! F it post them on the cruisers also! Class act!!!

Ok, let me go slower for you as I can tell you need minute to minute details or you go off track. The FBI stated in person that if in fact the officer called the bar that that was clear corruption. He stated that it would have to be proven. Then two days later in court the attacker testified under oath that he received 4calls from the FPD cordio to be specific .And that he returned a call or two. The attacker also stated under oath that he " felt that I was thinking to chest bump him so he punched me!

My father then went up to Siomos after he testified and stated I want to shake your hand and Thank you for shooting yourself in the foot." And the attacker yelled out "I want him too" like a spoiled two yr old.

In the New Year you will hear all the details and read them in the paper. They all can Thank You and Cheryl a you two have been constantly tag teaming harassing me with your twisted lying!

The FBI never said any such thing and you know it. You and only you use the word "corruption" like it was some kind of statute. Just because you say it over and over doesn't make it true. And, as the Chief said, you have no credibility.

You were given 2.5 years of probation. Your charges against the police were dropped. SO while the charges against you might indeed be dropped in September (And only if the judge, DA, magistrate, et al, haven't looked at these forums to see that you have clearly violated the terms of your probation not only by discussing the case but also by saying the bad things about everyone involved), you are still on probation. No one else is.

All of your tales about the FBI and Ethics Commission are nothing more than fantasies on your part.
