Fitchburg police shut down illegal encampment
A group of homeless people evicted from a camp under a bridge behind Riverfront Park last week say they have nowhere else to go, but city officials say the move was in the interest of the public -- including the homeless themselves.

River Front park is always clean and kept clean by the DPW. The homeless live NEAR River Front park. There are homeless everywhere throughout Fitchburg. In the woods along airport road and under every bridge.
We all need to do more for this population. The homeless is a mixture of down on their luck individuals/long term unemployed, drug addicts and mental health afflicted individuals.
Our Fathers house has done an awesome job concerning assisting the homeless. They give out plates of food to them which I have seen these homeless just vacume down the food.
Unfortunately on this particular site many of you are anti-homeless. Some of you will say, "let them freeze to death so we don't have to pay for services that they may need. Others will say, they need to get jobs. And then those other narrow minded will state, "let them stay clean off drugs and alcohol as Our Fathers house will take them.
Every Homeless person is our fellow human being. Many are good people and Yes some are dangerous trouble makers. Irreguardless we must assist our homeless.
This is a bigger problem than you think. Just this past week in Fitchburg housing court the judge has evicted soon to be homeless citizens. I don't know why but this housing court and board of health protect slum lords. Not all are slum lords.
I have seen the board of health overlook some serious health violations within Fitchburg. One apartment the toilet from the above unit leaked onto the floor of the apartment below. The tenants tore down the sheet of drywall that was hanging as the feces and urine leaked onto the floor. They had to put a plastic sheet on the floor to collect the feces as they directed the kids to stay away from that area in the middle of their living rm. This went on for over a years time.
Yes, the health department protects slumlords in Fitchburg. The state needs to be made aware of this situation so a change in the health department employees can take place.
For many the prospect of being homeless will never be a threat but for many Fitchburg residents it is a real threat. If you keep up with job numbers you will see that Fitchburg is the very worst inunemployment and job opportunities. Everyone that does work within Fitchburg is from outside of Fitchburg. A lot of local companies hire from outside of Fitchburg.
I strongly feel that our city council and mayor have to stop and think about our homeless situation within Fitchburg. A lot needs to be done concerning assisting this group.
And to those who feel that it is as simple as staying clean and sober to get a bed at our Fathers house, you are wrong. This facility can only assist so many homeless period. They have done awesome to say the very least in assisting the homeless but they cannot do it all.

The police have dealt with the homeless as best they can. I have never seen the police harrassing the homeless as I have seen done such as in Shirley,Ma. In Shirley they use to constantly physically throw and push drunk and homeless citizens.
In Fitchburg I believe that we all must assist the homeless. The police have been doing there part, Our Fathers House has been doing their part and the local churches have also been assisting this population greatly.
Now we need the city council and the mayor to begin to start caring. Other citizens that can help need to assist as much as they can. There are those on here that wouldn't assist the homeless if they were on fire in front of them. We don't need these individuals as they never were there to help anyways. They are selfish nasty people.
I have read about a shortage in food pantries' in Fitchburg. Some citizens could afford to take a hundred dollars and throw it out their window. I am asking for these individuals to please take that $100 and send it to a homeless shelter and/or food pantry in Fitchburg.
We also need to begin to think internally. We need job opportunities. Not to mix subjects but I must. We can not concentrate on assisting multi millionaires in building any more student housing facilities. This has taken away from job opportunities of so many in Fitchburg. This program/ overlay has been an enemy of job opportunities within Fitchburg. We need better thinkers not just ones who react when politics calls for a photo op!
Mayor Wong needs to be more proactive. Yes, this homeless situation is centered at the Mayors office. The Mayors office needs to better handle this situation. Screw politics for the moment and do what is right for the homeless within Fitchburg.
