Home coops? Feathers may fly

City officials are struggling with a councilor's petition to allow residents to keep and raise up to six chickens on properties of less than 5 acres, while residents supporting the notion say it's a matter of providing inexpensive, healthy food for their families.

I volunteered in Haiti after the earthquake.

Down there villages and towns allow chickens.

A well thought out guideline for protecting neighbors from anyone that would do this and not take care of the chickens is all that is needed. The petition already has a provision where someone would have to get permission from their neighbors anyway, so this shouldn't be a big deal.

With the continued increases in cost for food, it makes sense to allow those people interested in growing/raising their own food the freedom to do so.

A dozen eggs are no more than $3.00, how can it be cheaper to raise chickens for eggs? If we were talking "kobe" beef ok, but how many eggs does a family go through to justify the cost and nuisance to raise their own chickens? At most two dozen eggs for a cost of less than $6.00. It could cost that much in feed. A dopey idea.

The trash will be raising chickens for god knows what reasons. They'll probably try to claim them as dependents.

Growing up I had a friend who's family tried to raise geese. It was a big mistake, sure they were cute as litttle chics but when they got big and crapped all the time on a hot summer day it stunk. Keep the chickens on the farms.

Just try and be realistic. I have a regular home. I don't want sharks in my pool, monkeys in my trees or chickens running around in the yard.
