Does anyone know what is going on with Marshall Farm? Went by there the other day and they are closed. Tried checking their website and it has been closed down. Tried calling and the number has been disconnected.

Sonny, it's not what you think it is. It's a horse breeding operation.

Simmer down big boy.

Ken Posco bought it and now they breed thorouoghbred race horse. Here is the story. The newspaper works for other news networks such as tradingmarkets.com but many stories will not get published in the local paper.

Unbelievable but I'm not surprised. This guy has closed one of the most beautiful orchards in Fitchburg! Many families have looked forward to apple picking each year and now its gone. Once again its all about how much money can be made. I saw it coming when he first bought the place and nothing was free anymore. Just a big carnival out to make money and now no orchard. Its a shame. The original owners must be disgusted.

Thanks for all the help. I saw the horse breeding story awhile back but didn't think that they would get rid of the apple picking. Funny thing is he was pinning his hopes on gambling being legalized...and it wasn't. So now what does he do? Also the story boasted that the breeding farm would bring in more jobs to Fitchburg. What about all the people who lost their job when they closed down the apple picking? It's a sad day. My family and I will miss going apple picking there.

Boone,

Farm workers are low wage, extremely low wage, workers. Perhaps a thoroughbred horse breeding farm will have higher paying non-seasonal jobs.

As far as picking apples is concered, Lanni Orchards is right around the corner.

I am simply in shock is all. What a waste of beautiful space. Not just the apple picking but the area, the scenery and the homieness of the gift shop and cafe. A little piece of the country in the midst of a crappy city, and now the neighbors can smell horse poop instead of apple blossoms...

Lifetime Fitchburger,

Horse poop vs. the other animals that Posco had up there as part of his attraction? What's the difference? The cafe was awful, went there for breakfast and there were wall to wall flies, and all they offered were bagles and muffins. Some breakfast.

This is good for the city, or would you prefer yet another foreclosed property with no property taxes being paid into the coffers?

I know this post is old, but the farm has recently changed hands again. Hollis Hill farm just recently bought Marshall farm and he plans on returning back to it's natural intended use. The farm will be making there own maple products and he is planning on bringing the orchard back up and running. Please feel free to stop up and take a look. The store is open on the weekends selling fresh meat, poultry and maple products!!

We heard about the transfer to a farm owner in Lunenburg and that it was going to be revived, but wasn't sure who or when. I couldn't be happier. Now WAKE UP Fitchburg and support this farm, along with our other local growers.

If this can be a U-Pick orchard, farm store and perhaps a place to go for breakfast/lunch that would be awesome. I can't tell you how I've missed having the farm and business that George Marshall and his family had built up.

I'm looking forward to having another nice place to send our guests, and looking across the valley to see the farm alive again!

Brian
