Full story: Sentinel & Enterprise

The Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts will open an office on Main Street in Fitchburg this spring, with the goal of reducing the area's high teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease rates, according to the agency's chief executive officer, Dianne Luby.

Spoken like a true "MAN". Someone wanted? I believe it takes two. I believe if men were the ones to become pregnant, most would be singing a different tune when it comes to reproductive rights. FYI: PP provides many more services besides abortion (approx. 3% of all services in 2007). They perform cancer screenings, menopause treatments, and child health care in some areas.

Ok, good deal....if it lasts.
They are probably just sayign it to get their foot in the door.
So, what does this place offer, that $ex ed, doctors offices and the school nurse don't?
Birthcontrol seems to be everywhere but still, teenagers are getting pregnant...they know what they are doing and just don't care...how is this place going to make them care about themselves?

There has to be a strict policy and contract with the city that there will be no abortions performed in this facility ever!
Wow, I think this is a risky venture for the city to allow a license to operate on Main st.
I like the idea of an educational facility for teenage girls and young adults.
I would have extremely strong objections along with most likely moving out of town if they offered abortions! This would completely ruin Fitchburg!
Main st is the focus of a city. The Mayor and others on the license board must be involved with the creation, size and colors of the sign for this business!
We need to bring accounting firms into Fitchburg as well as arcitectual firms. We need a highly visible professional atmosphere on main st.
I have no political position on abortion. I would never suggest it to anyone and I would always try and talk people out of it but I feel the decision belongs to the parents.
It seems like they will be offering counseling which is great. I hope there will be no protest on Main st.
I think Fitchburg offers a highly affordable office space for professionals and the arcitecual feeling to the other is attractive.
You would move out of town because it would ruin Fitchburg if they offered abortions. Hate to inform you, Fitchburg was ruined awhile ago. Drug dealers, murders and prostitutes are running around the city...but wait the sign for PP should be yellow not green and 5 feet high not 7 feet. Hahaha

Woman sweetie, woman.........bet you didn't see that one coming.

I understand it takes two, but if the woman is the one to have to endure the pregnancy and have to raise a child by herself (if the father leaves, which usually happens) then she should take those extra precautions to make sure it doesn't happen.

Yeah, and how many "middle class" people will have access to these so called services.
My understanding (as with food stamps and fuel assistance, spoken from needing help at one time) that unless I speak a language other than English or am on welfare I get turned away.....will this place be different? Will EVERYONE have the same access and help if needed or is it only for the "less fortunate"

Another thing: How many of the pro-life people out there are using or purchase Microsoft products? The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the major contributors of the Planned Parenthood organization. Way to support the cause!

In these economic times, PP may be the only health care option for many women. This organization strives to provide access to ALL women.

If it is for aALL women and they are not going to discriminate for whatever reason (income, language, race), then great.
We shall see if/when this place opens and read about the comments.
Personally, Fitchburg has WAY too many social services as it is, it is like the handout capitol of Massachusetts.

Your ignorance of how PP operates (or doesn't in this case) is astounding and knows no bounds. You have absolutely no clue as to what you are talking about yet you feel compelled to keep spewing your misinformation. You weren't Martha Coakley's campaign chairperson, were you?

There was a nondescript PP office by my college, next to coffee shops, restaurants, bars and the book store that competed with the college book store. There were no protests, no abortions just sex education and pregnancy/STD prevention. Side note: If social agencies are providing this already, how effective are they? Twice the state average? Please!

Hey AH, why do you think I am asking questions about this place?

Because I apparently do not know what it is all about....I had no idea that they did cancer screenings and menopause treatments and the like (thank you to the poster that pointed that out)
Someone said that this place may be the only place some women can get health treatments, well most of the social services in Fitchburg only hand out or help those that are "less fortunate".

By the way AH, I voted for Brown.

They will not keep it that way forever, and even if they did PP is a disruption to a city trying to recover from a blighted past.

I am pro-choice, yet I very strongly disagree with you. This is not the only option for ANY. There are other lower profile agencies in Fitchburg that already offer the same services... This on only brings with its name an unavoidable stigma. Such as "the acorn of healthcare"

Wow.

What ever happened to the saying "It takes a village to raise a child"?

I could not read past the 2nd page of this thread because of all the bickering of Fitchburg, prostitutes, pregnant teens,etc...

I love babies and I love helping people. I guess I am the loser for feeling happy that Fitchburg is finally offering reputable, useful resources and education to those who need it most.

The reason I point out the sign is due to the fact that, signs can look cheap! If you haven't noticed Fitchburg is an architectural Gem! Drug dealing, murders and prostitution are everywhere in America.

The problem in Fitchburg is they do not try and solve murders; they allow gang banger drug dealers to run the city and the prostitutes have been working by cell phone so you don't see many walking!

We need leadership that is strong, we need to rid the corruption out of the FPD so that it can function properly. I see a lot of positives but if they were to have an abortion clinic on Main street then the town would never have a chance to survive! There would be protest!

The contract should state that abortions NEVER can be done on Main St. If they decide on conducting abortions they need to open up on a deserted side street out of view!

Main street needs professional offices! Fitchburg needs big businesses that would employ residents of Fitchburg!

All these negatives can be changed, we need adequate, honest law enforcement! We need politicians who will bring in business to the city.

Name calling? What are you, 5 years old? So you've got your bottom firmly planted in front of a computer and rather than Googling Planned Parenthood to discover for yourself what services they offer and how they are delived you instead come on this Topix forum and make statements and ask questions that give the appearance that you are either not that intelligent or are looking to pick a fight. Either way you look bad. You opened your mouth and gave everyone the distinct impression that you believe that only minorities and non-english speaking pregnant women would have access to the services offered. Go back and read your comments and tell me I'm wrong. I guess we can see where you got the Bully moniker from. Although you're even lacking in that department.

Planned parenthood is not on any Main street in massachusetts. Worcester is 5 miles from there Main St.

I think it is a great idea if they have a very professional sign and they are NEVER to perform abortions there! There needs to be community involvement that involves these young girls!

The FPD is so ANTI-SOCIAL that the sense of community is lost! Nobody wants to interact with them, they are extremely rude, ignorant and completely arrogant. The station looks like a dark unsafe dungeon!

They don't even have a sign like most cities; they are hiding in the shadow; the ironic thing is most of the big weight drug dealers and gun runners operate within a two block radious of the place.

Young kids in Fitchburg don't want to grow up to be police; why is this? Go to crime ridden Boston and ask a classroom full of kids what they want to be when they grow? They will tell you Police,Fire fighters, doctors and lawyers!

The police are looked at in this city as "the poison"! They put forward this "Us against you" mentallity! We need to fix this department first!!!! Nothing positive can happen in Fitchburg until we rid this department of the corrupt crooks that operate out of it!
