Oh please!!! Say Joe, are you going to clean up your act, like not covering up the Halloween beating incident involving the brothers??? Or employing your brother who was never actually a certified p.o.???

"The change in policing tactics is meant to increase adherence to village rules through education"
Pardon me sir but I believe you are in violation of one of our laws. If it is not too much to ask would you please come to the station to watch a highly informative video on the subject.

Laws have a purpose and are intended to be enforced.

Were this a community on the mainland, its hard to imagine that anyone would accept people who frequent the bars and restaurants leaving paper wrappers, bottles, cans, styrofoam cups and plastic bags on the streets, private properties and on beaches; dunes being trampled and broken glass left on the cross-walks and sand; people changing into their clothing and picnicking on the public sidewalks; people urinating and defecating in public (because the bars and restaurants have inadequate facilities and the public bathrooms are closed); public intoxication; groups of people residing in unsafe conditions, the public health hazards of mounds of unbundled trash and waking up neighbors in the middle of the night; trespassing and theft.

This warrants more than a warning.

It’s my expectation that "the beleaguered Ocean Beach police department" will enforce the laws of the Incorporated Village of Ocean Beach.

although i can sympathize with the community having to accomodate 5000-6000 tourists during the summer season, surely the community is offering something. If you don't want tourists, close your many bars, clubs and restaurants. Tourism will most definately cease.

Just who does the Mayor feel he's fooling? The PD does what it is told to do. The mayor has policies that the PD follows. It's nice to educate the public before writing them a summons but quite frankly the public really does not give a damn. This mayor is a fool!

Agreed. However a viscous beating to a perp is in itself a criminal action. Who is there to enforce these laws?

"Mayor Joseph Loeffler Jr. announced the change in policing tactics during the Fire Island community's first board meeting since its acting police chief and three other officers were indicted last month in relation to the beating of a New Jersey marketing executive."

Changes are not going to be made, they were made. Last year since Chief Paradiso was gone and those 5 other cops were gone, the department has been recognized as being friendlier, more professional, and more helpful. They helped educate the public and at the same time enforced the laws. I think the department has gone through great changes. Now those who were let go are trying to take them down. Its insane what i've been reading. Those men are just upset they were asked to leave.

If Imus and his entire radio show staff can be fired for using a racist phrase to describe the Rutgers woman basketball players, the least that can be done with the Land of No administration is canning the lot of them, from the Mayor on down.

I feel the OB department has a long way to go to dispel any ill feelings that most have toward them. Whoever is on patrol will always be considered a low life until the past stigma gets a chance to wear off, and new policies are seen to be working. Give the new group a chance and your support without automatically badmouthing them.

Mr. Mayor:
I'll never visit your stupid town ever again and I ever hear anyone speak the name Ocean Beach I'm going to tell them all the horrible stories that happen in your stupid town. Keep your Ocean Beach for yourself, your goons and your stupid residents.
I hope nobody ever visits your town ever again so you can all starve.

It's not just the vistors who run amuck there. The year round population except for a few,
are pill popping, cocaine using drunks, who have sex with each other's spouses. The lifestyle there is a joke. It's really a very sleazy place.

All the locals at Ocen Beach complain about the visitors...but if there was no visitors there would be no Ocean Beach...do you think your town, deli's, restaraunts, bars, rental houses, and shops would be able to stay in business with a town of 180 people....no, you need the tourist to support you....so if you want to live like a troll move to a less frequented town or else shut your mouth. Better yet have a snapple on the street so the cops will beat you and then ship you out with out telling your friends and family where you are and then they will lie about everything and try to cover it up...ahhh good ole' Ocean Beach Cops you can always count on them

I'd love it if the rules were more strictly enforced.

I'm sick and tired of all the goons who come here to trash this lovely barrier beach.

If the bars would close at midnight, maybe we could keep the alcoholics at home and let them traxh their own neighborhoods.

It's unbelievable that people come here and behave in ways that they would never dream of in their own community

Most people including the home owner's do not support the type of behavior alleged.

In fact, there is frequent discussion at the public hearings of the Board of Trustees related to the conflict between the desires of the home owners and the desires of the business district.

Most home owners would be quite satisfied with cancellation of the 1:00 AM Sunday morning ferry service (that carries inebriated people back to the mainland); not to have inebriated people (who missed the boat) spralled over the benches in town or walking through the residential district (hooting and waking up the residents on route to the beaches where they will otherwise sleep; not to pay for the additional policing required by the commercial district (including policing of inebriated people who get into fights, trespass and litter); additional carting costs of the garbage and clean up of the public walkways and beaches; and the additional costs of maintaining public facilities to support the inadequate accommodations of the bars and restaurants; the additional costs of the courts (that address rampant underage drinking, disposal of “objectionable waste”– which is a “bodily discharge”, assaults, theft and trespassing).

Clearly the interests of the business owners differ from the home owners.
