These houses were built BEHIND the original primary dunes. There are archival photos at: http://chl.wes.army.mil/shore/ The double whammy of improperly maintained inlets (Shinnecock and Moriches) and the Westhampton Groin disaster have trapped sand that should be replenishing Fire Island's dune system.
This situation needs to be reversed ASAP to protect Long Island's South Shore. Fire Island is Long Island's "levee" system.
New Orleans used to have its own version of Fire Island. Let's not repeat that mistake on Long Island.
