In my wife's family the story goes that Uncle Roger had a fleet of beach taxis (think dune buggies with meters) on Fire Island in the 1940's. Roger had just dropped off some paying passengers across the border in Ocean Beach, aka "The Land of No". Roger was confronted by the OB sherriff about this alleged violation. Words were exchanged and the sherriff drew his gun on Roger who today, in his 80's, is still a large and dauntingly fierce fellow. Roger took the gun from the sherriff and threw it into the Atlantic. My wife's uncle was arrested but the case was eventually dropped through intervention of an inspired lawyer from the firm Siben and Siben (also still around) of Bay Shore who successfully argued that the strip of beach below low and high tide marks was not part of Ocean Beach. Political considerations, always a factor on Long Island, may also have played a part.

Just another day at the beach.
