Full story: Newsday 80
Saltaire is an island community of 43 where bicycles outnumber cars, residents think of Long Island as "the mainland," and every year, a dead dog named Pal never fails to get a write-in vote for the village ... Full Story

If A Local community wants to continue in existance as a municipal government SO BE IT. Bigger is not necessarily better or less expensive. I can just see the Town Of Islip providing services based on a ferry ride.

I have been to Saltaire alot and know many of the people there. It is a wonderful place to be, and if the local government is dissolved, it would be a travisty to the people who live there year round.

Saltaire SHOULD keep it's Village Rights. Besides the number of homes paying full time taxes must be around 2000 homes. Everyone. And Those taxes are very high. Full time taxes. If you call them non village then Pro-Rate those Suffolk Taxes to only 2 montha/yr, or 1/6th of their current tax bill.. This is a vague bill.

This will be our 4th summer on Saltaire and it is a lovely place...not many places nowadays where you can let your 7 year old walk to get ice cream with just a friend, or play on the playground while you finish dinner at the sole restaurant in town either. Its both private yet friendly, and everyone does look out for one another.

LET THEM BE!! They must be doing something right!

We've been going there for years and it is heaven on earth! Its the one place our entire family gathers, relaxes and laughs...most of us crash in the family beach house....me and my boys sleep restfully in 'looser's cove' and live for each morning on the beach...The cost of living on LI may be insane, but our memories we make are priceless.

The tourists and summer residents(due mostly to their inconsiderate attitude and poor behavior)are known as the "Cidiots" by the locals in seasonal places like Saltaire. That's why Mr. Baker keeps a countdown calendar.

Dennis Foley enforces codes? I did not see his name on the NYS Certified Code Officials list

This why the New York State should act on Villages ignoring the law!

24 years ago I spent the best summer of my life on Saltaire. I worked at the Saltaire Day Camp, ate chocolate croissants from the market, and danced to "The Safety Dance" at the Yacht Club at night.
Where else can you be barefoot and free from the stresses of real life?
Saltaire is a magical place. I hope it is allowed to stay that way.

Saltaire bites, like many of these communities on fire island. The people think they can do whatever they want. They should drop a bomb, level the island, and rebuild.

he is a security guard employed by the village of saltaire; there is nothing wrong with a security guard employed by a government enforcing the codes of that government.

in fact, the town of babylon employs this same practice. so does just about every other local government on long island

screw the beach and all the jews that live there. they should all go back to the city and live there. sure they pay taxes-- all the homes are "listed" on their certificate of occupancy as "seasonal residences" but in reality they are full blown mc mansions. try and visit the place- you can't unless you live there. and as far as those "wonderful" little brats that run around getting their parents wall street journal.. well let's say there ought to be a leash law. isn't mario posillico from the same posillico family that ran the south west sewer district, and ran away with all the money to a carribean island? god help them all if a real nys code enforcement officer spent some time over there.
Right, the first thing the NYC code officer would do is try to get a bribe from someone and that would start the spiral into he*l*l that has happened to NYC !!!

... Government Efficiency and Competitiveness? Wouldn't you think they should start from the top down -- in Albany -- to introduce these alien concepts to New York State government?
