TAXES Marion Co. We are retired and and our NEW TAXES are 1200 / month which in itself is equal to a monthly mortgage payment. Our taxes went up by 220%. OUTRAGEOUS !! No ones taxes should have doubled in a single year. Our tax rate is higher than in Manhatton NY. The tax rate should be 1%. We need to FIRE all our legislators and start afresh. Harry, angry citizen.

School Boards are elected. You're not paying attention, which is the problem with most voters."

Actually our school board has two Ohio board members appointed - not a single Indiana resident gets to vote on them even though they help set our tax rates. They also receive $500,000. to $600,000. of Indiana taxpayer money annually for their residents (nice little pork carve out there that our politians and civil servants just waste for Ohio residents who's vote doesn't count in Indiana)- There are even some of from Ohio that believe they are doing Indiana a favor by spending OUR money. They contribute less than 2% of our funding in our district but drive 85% of the costs of our district!- Hey they (Ohio) fund only $1 of the kickball teachers $51 hourly pay before benefits are factored in.
Department of Education, Suellen Reed, Jeff Zaring, & Kevin McDowell doesn't care and the State Board of Accounts, Bruce Hartman, Paul Joyce, Chuck Nemeth, and Stan Mettler Doesn't Care Department of Local Government Finance, Melissa Henson, Bob Harris, Michael Dart Doesn't Care and I believe based on the lack of doing anything and lack of response from the Governor's office that Mitch Daniels doesn't care. I know my state Senator Johnny Nugent doesn't care. What is $6 million dollars over the course of the last decade? Why should the false billing of OHIO resident ADM by our school district to the Indiana Department of Education and the receipt of Indiana Basic Grant Dollars for OHIO residents that are not reimbursed by Ohio be an issue with Indiana taxpayers? Why should state government not feel the need to challenge this FRAUD on Indiana taxpayers?
Also while I am on my roll - Why oh why is it all right for school board members to receive taxpayer funded health insurance?- this self-serving perk is costing us in excess of $10 million annually as a state. DOE does not care whether schools are accountable fiscally for the money that passes through them to the schools - their view is that State Board of Accounts is their internal control. If SBOA doesn't catch the fiscal gaming that is played by our school's business leaders -(even though that is not the SBOA role)-(SBOA would not possibly be able to even pretend to pose as independent - if DOE's assertion here were true - but hey who cares about Generally Accepted Auditing Standards?- Certainly not auditors who perport to abide by them, most certainly not!)
DISCONNECT - that nobody cares about - Taxpayers are getting screwed and the system is just being gamed and we just keep getting screwed. Whatever, its for the children! I don't see children benefitting here - I see a bunch of self serving laze adults that don't look past the noses on their own faces.
We don't even expect our government to use double entry accounting - what a low low bar to reach. Other states around us do a much better job on much of this accountability stuff - what we get is whining that they want to avoid letting us know the real fiscal truth of state and local governmental entities. We spend more money not getting good information than it could possibly ever cost to do it right.
We need accountability and transparability in our state and local government fiscal reporting and accounting practices. They should not be allowed to hide things from us that impact our futures. I am sick of paying for all the incompetence and waste. We can do better.
I can tell you speak from experience. Been there done that. The entire system is flawed and I wouldn't know how to fix it. I think school families should be empowered and more liable for the more of the expenses via a special tax. The DOE is completely worthless and does nothing but spend money for little benefit. Public education needs to be reorganized.

I am very impressed about how you have this big conspiracy concerning the State Board of Accounts and Department of Education -- your information seems accurate and steady-handed, well-documented, and completely factual.(sure)
The one question I do have, however, is why are you apparently the only person to know this information since nothing has been done about it before? Maybe because your argument is...

Crazy.

Stop blaming SBOA and DOE for problems that are beyond their control -- they do not set the laws, the legislature does. Some of the people you personally identify give a damn about this state; if they did not, they would work for the private sector. They would certainly be better off financially if they did.

I guess I really had no idea until I read your rant that these agencies passed laws. I learn something new and impressive on Topix every day.
